Left a very wet and grey Manchester and arrived in sunshine and flew over carcassone as a treat too. Had an initial walk around , there are a lot of little streets and ramparts . Nice French onion soup and goats cheese salad for supper and now a post supper vin on the terrace !Read more

Day 2 Exploring

This morning to avoid the crowds in the Cite I headed over the old bridge and wandered around the more modern part of town - lovely streets with nice boutiques and picturesque squares. I had a guided tour at lunchtime of the cite which was really interesting and explained the development of the cite and its turbulent history . Enjoyable sunny afternoon which I finished off with a sit by the pool and a bit of reading . Lovely this evening to meet up with Adrian & Shelia who arrived from Spain and we had a super meal catching up .Read more

Went back over to the modern town and saw a good perspective of old bridge and cite . Incredibly hot today and by late afternoon could feel the heat bouncing off the pavement . Did the castle and the ramparts , pretty hot but great views . I think it dawned on me today the old cite is really now a tourist attraction , lovely but probably lacks the soul of yesteryear. Went back across from hotel later this evening and so nice to walk around without the crowds .Read more

Took the train this morning to Toulouse . Had a good wander around and it seems a very pleasant city . However it was soo hot , 34+ degrees and that somewhat limited our enthusiasm for too much trekking around . Saw some lovely churches and convents ( particularly liked the convent with air conditioning) . After a welcome lunch break in a bar with cooling mist we did one last convent and then headed back to the station for the fast train to carcassone . Saw a bit of cloud here this evening . Had a very enjoyable last meal with A&S helping them celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary- congratulations you two !Read more

Always hard to know what to do when you are travelling later in the day so I opted for a canal boat trip down the Canal de Midi. Not the most exciting boat trip I’ve been on and did not deliver on the promised views of the Cite but saw two locks and plenty of bulrushes . Headed back to the cite for a nice lunch and then back to the hotel for a few hours around the pool .
