Arrived after a good journey to Baveno on lake maggiore. Lovely hotel and nice room with a view - walked down to the lakeside and had a nice limoncello spritz - not great for the head at 3 in the afternoon. Very pretty place and quite quiet . Visited the Borromean Islands by small launch - saw the palace on isola Bella . Very grand and gardens very Italian in style . Then went to the next island for lunch . Weather sunny to start with but rained later in afternoon .Read more

Started off raining for our boat trip north on the lake to the town of Conobio- pretty place . Then went to the Taranto gardens and the sun came out and was pretty hot . The lake is huge , had no idea before I came here . Part of it is in Switzerland. Weather also changes pretty quicklyRead more

Early start where we headed off to Switzerland through the simplon pass. Stunning scenery. We went to Zermatt and had great views of the Matterhorn. We went up an underground funicular and had coffee at the top with the Matterhorn in front of us. Had a walk around Zermatt , saw the very sad graveyard of climbers who have sadly lost their lives climbing. Stayed sunny all day. Now experiencing a very bad thunderstorm back in ItalyRead more

Took local bus to Stresa - nice place - went to top of hotel Palma to see the views from their sky bar . Then took boat to Isola Madre , another Borromean island . Lovely terraced garden and a cool and beautiful villa to look around . Returned to hotel about 3pm and had a good few hours around the pool . Hottest day , lovely blue sky but thunderstorms have arrived again this evening .Read more

Woke up to thick cloud , thunderstorms and rain . Headed off to Lake Como- luckily not raining there . Had a boat trip - geography of the lake very different to Maggiore. Then had a walk around Como ( the town) and went in the cathedral and general mooch around . Quite a pleasant place - didn’t see George Clooney!Read more

Delightful day where we went to the small lake Orta- a very pretty and tranquil lake . We first took a boat trip to a very small island that had only a convent and then took the boat to Orta San Guilo. A very pretty village . We climbed the hill and saw a number of chapels dedicated to St Francis of Assisi ( there are 27 but we only went in 7 - all very similar !) . Had a nice lunch . Then went to see the statue of San Carlo Borromeo. Very impressive and great views . Today the lakes looked blue which I was hoping to see.Read more
