    Beautiful mix of colors

    December 28, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After a very short night — barely three hours of sleep — we headed to the airport very early.
But I met some really lovely conversation partners on the plane. Sharing travel stories with Helga (79) and Monika (50) made the time fly by.
We also saw a stunning sunrise — I’ve rarely seen so many colors. Even a rainbow. Incredible.
Arriving to warm, beautiful weather was the perfect beginning of my final trip this year.

  • Exploring the area

    December 29, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today started with a visit to Loro Parque. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the money — very expensive, and there are nicer zoos even back home in Germany. I also deliberately skipped the shows; that’s a step too far for me.
What I really enjoyed were the enclosures you can walk into as a visitor. The free-flying parrots were amazing — even though the suspension bridge was quite shaky.
Afterwards, I strolled through Puerto de la Cruz, did a bit of shopping, and enjoyed a small lunch on the promenade.
Then I took the bus to La Orotava — public transport here is so cheap, it’s fantastic.
I explored the old town and ended the day back at my hotel with a piña colada.

  • A Day Trip to Santa Cruz de Tenerife

    December 30, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today I finally slept in and it felt amazing. After breakfast, I headed to the bus stop nice and relaxed to catch the direct bus to Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, the first bus was so full that it didn’t even stop. So I had to wait another 25 minutes for the next one, but luckily I managed to get a seat.
Once in Santa Cruz, I started with a short walk through the old town. I followed a small loop I found on the Komoot app, walked through the shopping area and along the main streets. Down by the harbor, I noticed they also offer hop-on hop-off bus tours, so I decided to do that. I actually like those tours a lot because you get loads of information without having to carry a guidebook or constantly look at your phone.
I got off at García Sanabria Park, which is a beautiful green oasis. What I loved most were the small green parrots nesting there. They were incredibly loud, but it was so nice to see them living freely. That was definitely the highlight of the day for me.
After that, I went to the auditorium, kind of a smaller version of the Sydney Opera House, had a look at the breakwaters with artworks by different artists, and then made my way back to the bus station. It was a bit confusing to figure out where the bus would leave, but luckily I found the direct bus back. Otherwise I would have had to change buses at least once. That would have been fine, but going direct is just easier.
Back in Puerto de la Cruz, I stocked up on some water and now I’m relaxing in my hotel room. From my bed, I can watch the sunset through the window with all those amazing colors, watching the waves roll in and listening to the ocean in the background. It’s incredibly relaxing.
All in all, it was a really good day. Much more relaxed than yesterday. I didn’t sweat as much and didn’t have to deal with steep climbs.

  • Exploring a UNESCO World Heritage Site

    December 31, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Since the weather is supposed to get worse tomorrow, I decided to do the trip to La Laguna today and check out the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. To be honest, I expected a bit more. It was nice walking around the streets, having a look into some courtyards and checking out the churches, but somehow I was hoping for more of an old-town feel. I actually liked La Orotava a lot more when I was there a few days ago.
After that, I decided to check out the botanical garden in Puerto de la Cruz, took another walk along the promenade, and then just went back to the hotel. And tonight it’s New Year’s Eve — we’ll see what I end up doing.

  • Not the best start to the new year

    January 1 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

So New Year’s Eve didn’t really go the way I had hoped. I think the food didn’t agree with me and I ended up spending most of the evening and half the night in my hotel bathroom. Still, I was kind of lucky because I had a balcony facing the sea. From there I could see the hotel’s fireworks, the neighboring hotel’s fireworks and also the fireworks coming up from the harbor, so I did get to see a bit of it.
Today wasn’t very pleasant either. I basically did nothing, just slept, drank chamomile tea and rested. I really hope I feel better tomorrow because tomorrow is the flight home and it’s going to be a long and tiring day.

  • An unpleasant surprise at the airport

    January 2 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

I got up super early to still go out for breakfast, since I had to be picked up by the shuttle transfer at 10 a.m. So I was hanging around the lobby from about 9:30, standing in front of the hotel at quarter to ten, and the bus did not show up until 10:15.
Then I spent what felt like an hour and a half driving all over northern Tenerife before finally reaching the airport.
The good thing was I was already checked in, and the luggage check went really fast.
But then, just as I got through security, the departure board showed that the flight was delayed. And not just by 20 minutes. No, it was already more than an hour late.
Let’s see what other surprises are coming my way.
