Last few hours at Tabin. Some exotic creature noises in the night. Managed to find a picture of the waterfall where I swam yesterday. Short walk and now just watching the river and the monkeys. Next and last, Gaya Island. Be nice to unpack for 5 whole nights before tackling the epic journey home.Read more

  • Tabin day 2

    Yesterday in Malaysia

Early morning walk around the reserve. Not much to spot but a beautiful morning. After breakfast a trip to the waterfall, a refreshing swim and then a completely unexpected orangutan sighting. A large male dozing in a tree. Gary wasn’t with me sadly as he’d been advised not to do the waterfall walk with his ankle. But we both had seen a female orangutan 2 days before on a river cruise so that was something. He meanwhile had sighted a large earless monitor lizard from the reserve! A dusk safari scheduled for 4.30pm and before that a mud foot soak!Read more

  • Birthday

    October 14 in Malaysia

Journey to Tabin not as bad as we had envisaged. But drove for 2 hours alongside vast palm oil plantations. Interesting article on Sabah trying to undertake sustainable palm oil. .https://www.amazingborneo.com/about/sustainabil…
Gary got a big birthday cake and we’ve just been out on a night safari and saw a giant flying squirrel and a few other mammals., a Malaysian cavity joined us for dinner! Gary having a birthday lie in tomorrow while I go for an early morning hike.

  • Nature walk

    October 13 in Malaysia

Took a walk around the boardwalk. Now dripping in sweat. Could hear but not spot many birds. Incredible katydids that made a noise only when you came near them. Just back ahead of another downpour.

  • Kinabatangan river

    October 12 in Malaysia

Arrived yesterday afternoon at Abai Jungle Lodge on the kinabatangan river. Dramatic thunderstorm after lunch which cleared in time for our evening river cruise. We got to study a lot of proboscis monkeys, watching their behaviour is mesmerising. So glad we have good binoculars, letting us see all the detail of their colouring and texture. After sunset we saw hundred of fireflies. Spectacular but not easy to photograph. After dinner a guided walk on the boardwalk to see some scary insects and a red kingfisher. Early river cruise this morning, 6.30am. Saw a crocodile, more proboscis monkeys, a purple heron, buggy fish owl, hornbill, kingfisher, hawk and silver monkeys. Our last river cruise this evening before we head off to Tabin tomorrow.Read more

  • Nocturnal walk

    October 11 in Malaysia

Amazing , scary and exhilarating nocturnal walk at the discovery centre. My guide took me completely off the track to spot some incredible creatures. Adam was calling ‘Tracy come quickly’, down a vertical ravine in the dark in a load of slippy mud, sweat pouring off me and knowing I couldn’t hold on to anything. What an experience and what a fantastic guide Adam was.Read more

  • Gigantic thunderstorms all night . The room shook. Clear this morning for our trip to the orangutan and sun bear centres. Fortunate to see a couple of orangutans and a sun bear climbing a tree. Last night on the nocturnal walk saw a scorpion, tarantula, bat, giant ants. I appear to be cohabiting the bed with some tiny ants. I have another nocturnal walk tonight, Gary will be resting his ankle. Onto Abai lodge tomorrow.Read more

  • My nature resort

    October 10 in Malaysia

Sandakan, staying in one of a handful of lodges. Wonderful views from our balcony. The humidity is incredible. I’ve just walked the short but intense boardwalk and when I got back, looked like I’d been drenched in a shower. Hoping to view flying squirrels shortly then a nocturnal walk.Read more

  • Bako national park

    October 8 in Malaysia

Hectic day spent walking in Bako national park in high humidity. Saw 2 vipers, a flying lemur and a proboscis monkey (high up and far away). Managed to squeeze in a trip to the ear nose and throat specialist at the hospital for Gary’s mouth ulcer! The joy of travelling with Gary.Read more
