  • Sea point

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

On the way along the western coast this morning.
The clouds were wispy and low, it all felt a bit surreal, especially over these white sand and turquoise waters.

  • Hout bay

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This one was a big one for me because I can actually remember it from 40 years ago when I traveled to SA as a child.
First time eating fish and chips out of a cardboard container, while waiting to go on a boat trip to see sea lions... It was wild!
I still have small seashells that I bought there at the time.

  • Chapman's peak drive.

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

On the other side of the bay from Hout, is Chapman's peak, that my late grandmother loved so much that she asked her ashes to be sunk in the water at the foot of the peak.
A single road has been carved into the side of the peak and gives incredible views back on Hout, the Sentinel peak, and the bay as a whole. It is a breathtaking place.Read more

  • Up Table mountain

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The weather was not supposed to be good enough to check out table mountain today, but we had done so much already in our jetlag state, that we just decided to see how bad the queues were.
They were non-existent, and the weather seemed possibly ok, so we improvised.
Turns out that the cold, windy summit was unseasonably hot, calm, and sunny!
    Best improvised trip ever.
It is possible to trek up the mountain, but the cable cars are much, MUCH nicer.

  • Rock and lizards on Table Mountain

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The rocks on Table mountain are rugged, carved by the winds, covered in lichen.
I actually have vivid memories of playing amongst them as a child, amazed at the abundance of lizards. The views held no interest for me back then; it was all rocks and lizards. Apparently the rocks have shrunk since I was little 😄, and there certainly is less lizards, but the top of the mountain is very much as it used to me in my memoryRead more

  • Flowers of the table mountain

    February 13, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Despite the ruggedness, the top of the mountain is covered in hardy plants and flowers. We are in late summer, now, so it is not as colorful as supporting, but still some pretty flowers...

  • Rhodes memorial

    February 14, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Rhodes memorial apparently used to be quite pretty. But it is a memorial to a key figure of apartheid and, as such, hasn't received much love in the past years. Add to that a bit of a gloomy morning weather, and you get an "abandoned asylum" feel that caught us off guardRead more

  • Avron's summer camp

    February 14, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

As a child growing in Johannesburg, Avron would be sent to summer camp all the way south close to Muizenberg.
The actual camp was hard to see and a bit run down, so I took pictures of a pretty house across the road instead, so you can see the mountain in the background.
Part of the activities was a 30 minutes walk to this synagogue whose community organised and financed the camp. It was lovely to see it still well cared for.

  • Sandy Bay beach

    February 14, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Since the weather had decided on "beautiful", we thought that we should check the only South African nudist beach at Sandy Bay.
As always, it was a bit of a trek to reach, but it was well worth it.
Only issue: some playful wind shoving the very fine sand in every nooks and crannies. Half an hour in the shower later...

  • The Silo neighborhood

    February 15, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The Silo is a trendy and touristy area of the waterfront. It's home to the iconic Zeits museum, hence the name.
Cafes, arts and craft shops, marinas, aquarium... It's a bustling area and perfect in a cool and overcast day.Read more

  • The company's gardens

    February 16, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Time to explore the city center, which was a weird mix of old 70s skyscrapers meticulously clean, but in dire need of renovations (like most things in South Africa so far).
One of the landmarks is the Company's Gardens (you'll see later why we went there), in which the Museum of science, (also very much in need of funding) mixes good old astronomy and biology with some very African subjects, like a fascinating exhibition on stone paintings from hundreds of thousands of years a go, and what they tell us of the religious and shamanic practices of this these times...Read more

  • 🐿 SQUIRRELS !!!

    February 16, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

The real reason we went to the Company's Gardens is that Avron remembered that it's packed with very friendly squirrels.
After a few failed attempts at trying to find healthy food to get their attention (they are apparently super picky, which we didn't expect...) We finally hit the motherload with good old peanuts!
The rest is history. Adorable history.

  • Bo Kaap

    February 16, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Apartheid and segregation were a lot more than a clear line between black and white. There was many other sub groups, such as the coloured (Anyone not white but not black). And then there was a divide by religions. And all the subgroups were only allowed to live in their designated suburbs.
Bo Kaap is a coloured-muslim neighborhood, very poor. In the 80s, for no reason that anyone can understand, the locals started painting their houses in bright colours, and Bo Kaap became a dangerous but popular touristic designation.
Nowadays, it is facing gentrification, pushing the old inhabitants away. Only 60% of the current inhabitants descend from the original Muslim owners.
It is still only safe during the day and with a group and a guide, but remains vibrant and colorful.

  • Follow the pink road

    February 17, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

On our first day in Cape Town, we've stumbled a few times on a line of pink paint on the sidewalk, and we wondered what it was about. Some touristy route, maybe? So we followed it, because we're curious, and find out that it ended in front of the only gay club in the city, somewhat out of the way. Perplexed, we followed it back to its other end, only to realise that it weaves through a few blocks, connecting several queer establishments, crossing a rainbow walk path, and ending up on the waterfront at a "hens night" kind of go go bar....
Still no idea who painted it and how legal it is, but I'm loving this pink line to stumble from one bar to the next 😅

  • The great(er) ocean road

    February 18, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Driving out of Cape Town, I was told to expect something like the Australian "great Ocean road".
I feel like this is the XL version, but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
