  • Nelson & train to Christchurch

    January 26, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

The first stop after crossing to the South Island was Nelson. Like all the other ports in NZ we visited, it was full of cut lumber to be shipped to Chima
Here, I left the boat overnight and took the 4 hr train to Christchurch where I spend the night. The boat was going there the next day. On the way, we passed a pink salt factory and saw seals swimming and sitti.g on rocks. Christchurch, that's been thru so many devastating earthquakes was quickly rebuilt and is full of pre-fab buildings. In order to brighten the new downtown, they had graffiti artist paint murals. They also boxed all the historic buildings ruble in containers for rebuilding them in the future. The next morning, I visited the local market and had fresh fish at a stall. It had a picture of various fish and Cyprus in the top corner. That afternoon, I took a boat tour on a jetski boat at a local river.Read more

  • Dunedin, NZ

    January 29, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Dunedin had an amazing history of mining by Chinese immigrants. Because of their mistreatment by the locals, they build a Chinese garden and memorial where I spend a lot of time learning their history.
Dunedin also had wonderful buildings and it was a delight walking around. Various churches and an amazing train station.
It made me wander what Christchurch was like since it was so much bigger.

What started out as a very cloudy foggy day, which apparently is common here, it cleared up. But there was a passenger emergency at a boat in front of us, so they took priority and went ahead where we had to exit the fjordRead more

  • Hobart Tasmania

    Feb 1–4, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

My Azamara cruise bypassed Tasmania because of high waves. I didn't want tossed it so in Sydney I got off the cruise early and flew to Hobart. I rented a car and drove around for 3 days. It was definitely worth it. I loved Tasmania and liked it better than New Zealand.
I spend 3 nights in Hobart. The 1st morning I walked around the Salamanca market that was an amazing farmers market and had oysters for lunch from an oyster farmer

It was abandoned because they stopped bringing criminals over, and the old ones died out.Read more

  • The UNZoo Tasmania

    February 5, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

It's called the UN Zoo because unlike a Zoo the animals are not caged in
Even birds where in the open and when it was feeding time he called them and they were eating out of our hands
Other animals where fenced in and we'll walk in and out and feed them
The Tasmanian devil was fenced and he was fed from the top and we watched thru the plexiglass. His jaws are very powerful and were crushing bones
The kangaroos were very friendly but very fed so they were not interested in eating any more
