The shortest distance between two points

Due to all of the flight issues earlier in the week we ended up hiking Base of the Towers on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. That means right after the hike we had to get in the car drive five hours to pick up Dylan. from El Calafate, have dinner and get back in the car for another 2 hour drive to El Chalten in order to hike Mt Fitz Roy.
Very tired but excited for next hike.
Arrived at our hotel at midnight ready to get 5 hours of sleep and hit the trailhead.
I was feeling the fatigue early on this hike but it wasn’t nearly as aggressive as the previous hike so that helped. as we got to mile 7 out of 8 to the summit it was making no sense. We could see the summit of the mountain, but there was a large section of a mountain, right in front of it, it had to be much farther way than 1 mile left. Almost all hikes that I’ve done typically have switchbacks to work your way up and around mountains to get to the top.. On this hike , however, we approach the sign that said 1 km to the summit, and as we started into it, we very quickly realized it was straight up and over. It was brutal.! As I was pushing through each step forward and wishing for switchbacks I thought about the saying “ the shortest distance between two points is a straight line“. Well that’s exactly what this one was. Straight up and over to the top.
