  • Day 24 Rabinal to Molinesecca

    I had a a night of hot sweats but slept ok. Slipped off the step of top bunk, luckily didn't hurt myself. Irish Declan is in the same hostel, also met another lovely Irish couple Claire and Alan from Cork who have given me many tips for Ireland.
    Today walked with Rocky at a good pace, the scenery is changing as we enter the mountains towards the Galacean region.
    Arrived into Molinesecca , a very pretty traditional old style village to stay in a private room at The Way hostel which is very nice.

  • Day 25 Molinesecca to Villafranca

    It was a rainy day for a beautiful walk !
    Had a specially prepared breakfast by my hosts Raymond and his wife this morning who even brought out the vegemite.
    The day was scenic but wet, feeling better and carrying my pack again, managed to stay dryish. I have a gorgeous room in a private hotel in the charming town of Villafranca. Everything is strung out to dry.

  • Day 26 Villafranca to Paraiso del Biarzo

    At breakfast this morning I felt like a queen on my own long table, chandalier and all !
    Beautiful walk through the mountains, picked up Rocky along the way for a few hours company. He is heading to O'Cebreiro today, I am heading up the hill tomorrow.
    My accommodation is like a chalet in the Swiss alps. Had a delicious pilgrims dinner including local trout and cheesecake. There are cowbells ringing and everything is very green and lush.

  • Day 27 Paraiso to Fonfria

    Up in the dark this morning to climb the hill to OCebreiro and beyond. Absolutely beautiful walk with mountain streams and views to the hills. Lush, green landscapes and little dairy farming villages along the way. Stopped in OCebreiro for breakfast, chocolate croissant and coffee as I haven't had one this week.
    Fonfria is tiny place in beautiful mountain setting for the night.
    Looking forward to Pilgrims meal tonight.... always starving.

  • Day 28 Fonfria to Sarria

    28km day in the rain. Started in the dark and mist at 8am.
    Quite scenic elevated countryside with mossy trails.
    Stopped for breakfast, snacks and hot chocolate, a leisurely walk into Sarira.
    Staying in the old Monestary, huge bunk room, cold shower but very quiet.
    Wandered into town for an incredible bowl of spaghetti bolognaise.
    Shared dinner with Libby and Allan from Manly Sydney, nice couple who have been walking since 31 Aug

  • Day 29 Sarria to Portomarin

    There were streams of new people and big groups beginning their Camino today.
    It was raining but I am used to the rain now and have been managing to dry out overnight.
    It was green, lush, mixture of hills and flat trails.
    Portomarin is a blend of old and new lively little river town, the cathedral was moved brick by brick to higher ground because of flooding.
    Tried the famous Galecean dish of octopus for dinner with Declan, Diana, Allanna (declans family) and Bruno (from ,,Italy)
    Stayed in huge hostel bunk room, slept well.

  • Day 30 Portomarin to Palais del Re

    Raining, windy and getting cold a lot of the day.
    Still managed to have a picnic lunch with Rocky in the sun. The scenery is still very beautiful, green hills, mossy rock walls, charming stone building villages.
    Got a pizza and ate in my room for dinner and a good night sleep.
    3 days to go !

  • Day 31 Palais del Re to Ribadiso

    A couple of dry hours along the trail this morning chatting with Rocky and new friend Maricus from Mexico who is just doing a 7 day Camino. Stopped for a picnic lunch, then we departed with Maricus at Marida, our half way point.
    26 km total walk today, raining all afternoon.
    Arrived into Ribadiso to a nice warm private room that feels like a converted horse stable, very cute and comfy.
    Only 2 days of walking to go !

  • Day 32 Ribadiso to O'Pedrouzo

    There is a hurricane crossing Northern Spain last night and today. It was wet and windy, a lot of large trees blown over and creeks are swollen.
    My rain pants were a blessing today, kept me warm.
    A bunk room in Albergue O'Trisquel at Pedrouzo tonight.
    Last night on the Camino before walking into Santiago tomorrow.

  • Day 33 O'Pedrouzo to Santiago

    In my own mind I had a peaceful solo 20km walk into Santiago today. The trail was woodlands, eucalypt forests, and a melody of chainsaws clearing the fallen trees from the hurricane.
    The long walk into the Catedral was a stream of backpacks.
    Stopped for churros and. Chocolate on the way in.
    The sound of bagpipes told me I was close, and then I was there, 500 miles from the starting point in front of the magnificent catedral.
    My pilgrim friends Rocky, Cathy, Bruno, Declan, Diana and Allanna also arrived into Santiago today.
    Anna from the breast cancer group who I had dinner with last night too.
    It was quite emotional and undoubtedly one of the most memorable highlights of my Camino !
    We all sat in the square for a couple of hours soaking up the atmosphere.
    Checked into my hotel, San Miguel and had a long bath.
    Out to dinner with the arrival group to an Italian restaurant to celebrate.
    It was nice to have my pilgrim family to enjoy the last dinner.

  • Goodbye Santiago Hello Ireland

    A big sleep in !
    Met up with Cathy to wait for Rehina in the square as she arrived.
    Went to the catedral pilgrims mass service, it was an exciting experience to see the butafumiero in action !
    Found Yung my Korean photographer friend in the square, a nice surprise.
    A time of goodbyes and special memories.
    Tasty last tapas, pinxtos lunch with Cathy and Rehina and then off to the Airport.
    Dublin, here I come.
    Declan and family dropped me off at ODonohues.
    Terrie was waiting for me at the door.
    Dinner and Irish music !

  • Dublin and Guinness Storehouse

    Full day in Dublin.
    Started with a walk in beautiful park.
    Delicious full Irish breakfast in the quaint Theatre cafe, tried black sausage.... liked it !
    Wandered around Grafton Street, buskers, Dublin Castle.
    Guiness Storehouse tour at 330pm till 630pm. One of the best tourist attractions I've been to ! Included 7 levels of info and history, self guided, tasting, live music, Irish dancing, we had a lot of fun.
    Guiness sausage roll for lunch.

    Completed my Camino journey with a final stamp in my Camino passport from the Guinness Storehouse and visited St James Catedral in Dublin, the starting point for Irish Camino.

    Back to Matt the Slesher for dinner, stuck our head in ODonohues bar for a quick listen to a few songs before heading up to bed around 1130pm.

  • Dublin to Kinsale Road trip begins

    Picked up our car to begin the Ireland road trip.

    Heading to Kinsale stopping in Waterford the oldest town in Ireland with a lot of Viking history.

    Overnight in Georgian style Old Bank Townhouse. Delicious seafood dinner, fresh oysters and fish pie.

  • Dingle to Doolin

    We had a nice light breakfast served to us at Murphy's Guesthouse in Dingle this morning then hit the road.
    The scenery today along the wild Atlantic way was spectacular, coastal beaches, green hills and rugged cliffs including the highlight of the day.... Cliffs of Moher.
    Weather is much warmer than expected, a top of 26 degrees today.
    Staying overnight in an authentic farmhouse guesthouse called O'Connor's.
    Walked to Gus OConnors pub for Guinness Irish stew for dinner and another enjoyable Irish music session.

  • Doolin, Aran Islands to Westport

    OConnors farmhouse provided a delicious breakfast this morning, and we chatted to the lovely American couple Lisa and Brooks who we met at Gus OConnors pub last night.
    Headed to the pier in Doolan for our 11am ferry to Aran Islands. Horse and buggy tour around the island was the best thing to stumble across.
    Awesome info, beautiful beach, ship wreck, rock walls.
    Fish and chips lunch, zero Guinness then back to Doolin for our 3 hour drive to Westport via the scenic Burren region on the Wild Atlantic Way.
    Overnight Marina Boutique hotel and music at Matt Molloys pub where we came across Declan and his golf crew.

  • Westport to Delphi Lodge Country House

    A delicious full Irish breakfast at the Marina Boutique Hotel this morning .
    It was really great to run across Declan, recap some Camino highlights and meet his golf buddies from Chicago last night, he was extatic that we are going to Delphi, he worked there in the 1980's as the bookkeeper.
    Today it was a rainy day, we drove from Westport via Wild Atlantic Way to Delphi Lodge, about 1 hr drive.
    The scenery was nothing short of spectacular and the rain added a layer of waterfalls to the mountainside...... wow wow wow ! Arriving at Delphi Lodge country house was breathtaking.
    Delphi has a sad history associated with the Irish Hunger Famine.
    We spent a relaxing afternoon sitting in the library by the fire, Irish tea and shortbread biscuits, reading and relaxing.
    Dinner at Delphi Lodge around the oval table in the formal dining room with the other house guests was delicious and a unique experience.

  • Delphi to Cruitt Island

    Terrie and I tried Irish oats this morning, porridge, cream and whiskey at Delphi Lodge.
    A two hr drive to Sligo where our ancestor, Patrick Keighran, is from.
    Beautiful ever-changing scenery from mountain to green to rugged coast.
    Visited a cemetery in Sligo, looked at graves from around mid 1800s, many were unkept and illegible.
    Drive another 2 hrs to Donegal Thatched cottages in a very remote stretch of Ireland's north west coast.
    I would say this is the absolute essence of Ireland's beauty, wow !

    Via Derry to catch up with my Camino friend Tom Gallagher for a personalised history tour of Derry and lunch.
    Wow, this was special, we learned about the political history of Northern Ireland and visited all the historic sites and remembrance monuments in the old walled city of Derry..

  • Belfast Titanic Museum and Dublin

    Oct 21–22, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Stayed at the historic Titanic Hotel, originally the working factory during the building of the Titanic. Enjoyed it greatly, was interesting to learn how much the city of Belfast invested into the Titanic and how the city was massively impacted by the sinking.
    Drove back to Dublin via Carlingford on the scenic coast road.
    Found a place of fairies and Leprichorns.
    Our last night in Dublin at Gogartys Temple Bar Hostel, I had my last top bunk !. Temple Bar area has a younger crowd than the part of Dublin we spent our first 3 nights.
    Some more great food and lively music, ir was a lot of fun and perfect way to celebrate our last night in Ireland.
