    Jacksonville to Fort Lauderdale Airport

    Dec 18–19, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We left on Thursday afternoon, after Flower finished work. I think we were all quite stressed but made it on the road nonetheless. The drive to Fort Lauderdale was about 5 hours.

Flower and Lexy did their nails in the hotel room and we ordered UberEats Chinese food.

I think I slept only about five hours before we rallied and ate an extremely sad hotel breakfast.

Shoutout to Johnny, our shuttle driver, for navigating the Fort Lauderdale airport expertly.

  • Evening in Playa Hermosa

    December 19, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We arrived in Playa Hermosa after an only 30 minute drive from the airport. Our hotel for the next two nights was right on the beach and we walked a few hundred yards to a not very good restaurant, Aquasport, and had a snack since Lincoln and crew weren’t going to be able to join us until 7:30 or 8. The sunset was beautiful and went on for at least an hour because of the mountainous isthmus around the beach.

Lincoln, Katy, Suki and Katy’s mom, Jeanie, and stepfather, Ed joined us for dinner.

I may have had too many margaritas and was probably annoyingly talkative.

  • Day 2 in Playa Hermosa

    December 20, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Mom and I rallied around 8 to have breakfast at the hotel. Once everyone else woke up and ate, everyone but Katy’s parents walked down the beach to the volcanic tide pools. Unsurprisingly, the Hughes crew spent a long time bent over the pools, looking for creatures and sea glass. Mom and I had lunch at a nearby restaurant called Almar and I had sangria to celebrate national sangria day (as if I need an excuse to drink sangria). The shrimp pasta and tuna tartare were both excellent. After lunch, we went next door to the little tienda to scout out jam and tequila prospects. I got some little treats and we headed back to the beach to wait for the housekeepers to clean our room before I headed in for a shower and a big nap. My energy is always a challenge and I didn’t nap at all on our second travel day and didn’t sleep much in the hotel in Fort Lauderdale. It’s always very frustrating when my disability, you know, disables me.

For dinner, we ate at the hotel because it was barbecue night. My lobster probably wasn’t worth the price but mom’s surf and turf was a delight.

We wrapped up the night with a little Ransom Notes with Katy on the upstairs balcony. It turns out that Keaton is extremely good at the game. Pictured is my hopes for the trip with my remaining words.

  • Day 3 in Playa Hermosa

    December 21, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

The three of us rallied to catch low tide in the tide pools and grab some breakfast. The highlights for me of the tide pools were the tiny hermit crab that mom found, the sea slugs that I find strangely adorable, and the chitons, which honestly horrify me.

I think I would like to be a Costa Rican beach cat in my next life. It seems like a pretty good gig.

  • Playa Hermosa to La Fortuna

    December 21, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We left Playa Hermosa and said goodbye to the beach for a week and headed to Nuevo Arenal to meet up with the Manuel crew for lunch overlooking the lake. I had a wonderful sea bass lunch with passion fruit sauce and a guaro sour, my new favorite drink, and not just because it means that I can brag about visiting costa rica more than once.

The birdwatching was fantastic at our lunch spot and I barely noticed when they fully forgot to put my meal into the kitchen.

  • Herping and Inverting in La Fortuna

    December 21, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

After spotting a very cool bird by shining my headlamp around our lodging, I set out on a small solo adventure into the jungle to see what else I could find. I found mostly spiders but also a few toads, at least a dozen geckos, and some more of the cool bird that I originally spotted. I never got as close as that first encounter though. I will be bringing my monoculars for the next adventure.Read more

  • Monteverde adventure

    December 26, 2025 in Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We drove the “back way” to and from Monteverde- along the lake, traversing rivers and up and down hills. It was gorgeous, bumpy and cozy (3 of us in the back seat of Ezra and Nena’s rental).
Zip lining at Xtremo Adventure Park. So fun, except for Flower, who was not feeling well.
    Lunch in Monteverde- delicious!!!
