Up at 4.30, out of the house into the dawn at 5.15, and hiked to the station (past my birthday present 'view'). Felt good to have the backpacks on again. Safely on the Rugby train, bound for Glasgow.

20000 steps!

Made the most of our first day here by walking all over this bit of the city. It's dry so far... Don't think that's going to last. Managed to check in early at Fraser Suites, unpacked, ate our sandwiches, did a wee food shop and set off. Lots of interesting things to look at en route to George Square, the Cathedral and the Necropolis, finished off by much-needed drink at Gandolfis.Read more

Bus tour 1

Dinner last night at Café India (next door to our apartment which was handy given it was showery when we emerged) was a mainly delicious curry, made all the better by games of Sh'ed and a waiter who loved listening to our perfect English accents. Much-needed 12 hour sleep followed.
This morning we walked through Merchant Square to George Square, bought our tickets and boarded our tour bus. It was pretty cool but dry, so we sat up top and all really enjoyed the audio voiced by Neil Oliver. Round our own area, and the Cathedral from yesterday, then out along the attractions alongside the Clyde.Read more

Kelvingrove

We got off the bus for a stroll through the gorgeous Kelvingrove Park, played pooh sticks, saw the back of the museum, then walked over to Sauchiehall Street for a Subway lunch. Back through the park and a game of eye spy before the bus came.Read more

Bus tour 2 and Buchanan Street

The university is soooo beautiful, really gothic and impressive, with beautiful new buildings and parks surrounding it. Lucky students. Bus ride took us through West End and via lots more interesting sites and home to George Square, in sunshine! Had rest at the suite, then out again to view Buchanan Street properly. So impressive. Dinner in Merchant Square (unfortunately with headache spoiling my appetite) at lovely, slow Italian place.Read more

Day trip to Auld Reekie!

So Andy presented the boys with an interesting idea yesterday, which they ran with... Instead of mooching around Glasgow's shops and parks for another day, let's go over to Edinburgh and see the Castle, the Royal Mile, Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument. We hadn't factored in the flooding from a torrential storm which battered the Eastern half of the country and left lots of train services cancelled, so it took us a bit longer than anticipated to get there, but we triumphed. Should've packed hats as yet again the forecast completely underestimated the weather. Did all the above, plus lunch in the Elephant Café, souvenir shopping for whisky (Andy) and medieval weaponry (Thomas), and best of all was a meetup with Margaret, Mike, Kevin and Elliott.Read more

Dinner last night at Bar Square, back in Merchant Square - lots of card games played in between courses, great hilarity usually resulting. Warm night. This morning saw us packed up, checked out of Fraser Suites and seated for brunch at the delightful Gandolfis Café by 10am. Boys thoroughly enjoyed their Scottish breakfasts! Friendliest place ever. Then I was allowed a quick visit to the Willow Tea Rooms shop on Buchanan Street before we caught the 11.37 train south by the skin of our teeth. Brief stops at Crewe and Bham international, then home.Read more
