    Just wow.

    December 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

It's still only 5 o'clock but having got up at 3.15am to catch our 8.15 flight, it feels much later. Matthew keeps telling me off for being over sentimental / emotional, but it has been the best day so far- all I could have hoped for. The weather is positively balmy, our flat is perfect and close to everything, and being here Rome is thrilling. I love it!Read more

  • Apartment and Dinner 1

    December 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

The apartment we're in is absolutely perfect. It's really quiet, in spite of its location, and going up two flights of spiral stairs brings back happy memories of Carcassonne. There are two double bedrooms and two beautiful bathrooms off the teeny kitchen / living area where we can all fit to watch telly (Netflix!!!) or to eat. All it's lacking is a view and an oven, and we can live without those.
After our first foray out after our lunch of bread and cheese yesterday (to Pantheon, Piazza Navona and cokes at bar in sight of Castel Sant Angelo), we crashed for a bit (started Fantastic Beasts) then went out to dinner in the restaurant we'd seen earlier. We ate outside! With a canopy, and patio heaters on full burn (Matthew pointed out that there doesn't seem to be a fuel cost crisis here) but still outside. M had a spicy pasta and the rest of us enjoyed wonderful pizzas! All fell asleep early.

  • Colosseo

    December 20, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Another perfect day for seeing the sights - warm and sunny. Walked to the Colosseum through Piazza Venetia, where we later had drinks. Breathtaking sights all morning. Lots of people, but no queueing necessary.Read more

  • Day 2 in Rome

    December 20, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

After a wonderful couple of hours in and around the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, we picnicked in the sunshine and made it through the bonkers traffic to a cafe on Piazza Venezia. We then climbed up the staircases of the incredibly impressive Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for awesome views. My vertigo kicked in a bit and Andy and the boys had to go up the glass lift to the highest lookout without me. Thomas refused to contemplate any further movement without ice cream, but suddenly gelato shops were hard to find! We were almost at the Trevi fountain before we discovered one... and then of course there were dozens. We got a bit lost on the way home, via some souvenir shopping.Read more

  • Vatican 1

    December 21, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Allowed ourselves a later start this morning. Noticeably cooler today. 5 minutes' walk to the Tiber, and across towards Vatican City. Soooo many photos!

  • Last supper - and Agata's apartment.

    December 21, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Our final meal - we walked back to see Piazza Navona by night - really buzzing, and the fountains are superb. Restaurants expensive within the Piazza, so we ate just off it. Bit of souvenir shopping done on way home, plus more gelato ... second of the day, as we'd already had one outside St Peter's!Read more

  • Last day

    December 22, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After a final shower and breakfast, we packed up our bags and left them in the apartment, then headed out in glorious sunshine via Ponte and the northern bank of the river to the Spanish steps. Lots of very expensive clothes shops in the area, beautifully decorated for Christmas. Climbed up to the fabulous church at the top - super views, of course. Bit more shopping and snacks for lunch, then met our driver who took us to Ciampino. Flight delayed.Read more
