5.30am boot camp & best sri lanka day
2025年4月18日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C
This morning, at 5 am we set off to lions rock an iconic rock here in Sri Lanka ..to climb the 1200 + steps to the top for the sunrise
It was a slog but fortunately reasonably cool by sri lanka standards....still over20degrees I'd say
The view at the top was lovely. Many trees and lakes and a Buddha in the distance , plus the sunrise and i think a cloud inversion .coming down was.also challenging as steps were uneven.
Part way i got chance to have the experience of the snake round me...it was heavy !
A few days ago ,I got lost on the way back to the bus, and discovered an enormous golden Buddha which we were due to see today...there's been banter about this incident , as the bus with everyone on it had to come to collect me
So ,today we went back to this Buddha now known as Jo's Buddha.
The group insisted I went again...so I did ....telling them that if they'd gone on a Gojo tour instead of an Explore tour they'd have seen it the other day...they all actually agreed it would have been sensible and viable..
Later we went to a silk shop and after the demonstration I had chance to try a sari....much more comfortable than the kimono in Japan! But did love the kimono experience
We were taken to a spice garden which i thought I'd find boring but the guide was excellent and we all had chance for short free massage
This evening we have been to see the temple of the tooth in Kandy...it is a holy week for buddhists and thousands of people are queuing out over night to see the relic which is Buddha's tooth...its surreal..there.are vast indescribable amount of people!! many have to stand all day and all night as so squashed there's no room to lie down or so it seems....so many police and military officers around....quite a remarkable experience..Kandy seems to be a big town but is currently mayhem on steroids!..but an experience I'd not have had if I'd come at some other time.
Feeling a little more settled in the group, though taking nothing for granted..
Better also as have finally seen some of the things I identified as the tourist attractions that interested me .
Overall, despite being up so early and still awake at 11pm.,Id say best sri lanka day so farもっと詳しく
An executive decision dayNot going out
2025年4月19日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C
I was forced to make the executive decision this morning to stay at the hotel following a trip to the bathroom...which our tour guide calls the happy room!
Use your imagination as to why ....
The tour guide assured me that there were many happy rooms at today's venues but I had to say ...what happens if I become. Unhappy between stops !🤣..
so I stayed in and did some planning for further parts of this trip.
This evening I was able to go to the vigil Mass at Kandy Cathedral
It was very interesting..hymns I'd not sung since prep school , parts of the Mass in sung Latin.. lots of altar boys 5 priests and the readings done in English Sunhali and Tamil .lots of excessive bell rings by the altar boys...Nuns all in the proper outfit in white !
Kneeling for holy communion received by mouth only
We emerged 2.5hrs later !
My concerns this morning didn't fully materialise ...thankfully !
Todays Photos are a collection over past few days that not put on so far.
The video is of the street where the current hotel is situated. The noise is from the people waiting to see the Buddha's tooth relic ....apparently the queue is 6km.long ... they are crammed together like sardines it's surreal!
I'm confident il be ok for tomorrow and just managed to get some proper milk from the reception through out tour guide so Yorkshire tea and sleep. We are on the move again tomorrow..
Every now and then I get to eat familiar food...baked beans, chips , bacon , I found laughing cow cream cheese triangles rich tea biscuits...honestly they taste absolutely incredible, just because of the familiarity of them ..not making me home sick tho ...もっと詳しく
An enjoyable transit day on the tour bus
2025年4月20日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
First thing this morning, we went to a Hindu temple ..I've acquired a red dot on my forhead which won't come off!🤣
The guy in the video was smashing coconuts and then burning them...whilst a bell was rung..its something to do with if you have sadness or stress in your life...seemed very cathartic to me and it was done with great gusto....
Maybe try it after a bad day!🤣
Then,a red carpet rolled out and music, while someone arrived under a red canopy, after which there was more music.
We had to give an offering of fruits and be introduced to the "priest " He took the offering behind a screen, cut it up and gave us half back ...another custom..
It bothers me that the incredibly poor people here and also seen in Thailand and Cambodia...bring these gifts and add money as well ,that they possibly can't afford...the fruit was a number of different items. They do this offering regularly...
I find it worrying..especially when you see the overall shabby chic, ramshackle state of most of the areas we are visiting or passing through ..which implies general poverty..
For us,here , things are ridiculously cheap, but not so for the locals who I imagine don't earn good wages.
Overall today was a transit day from our last hotel in the centre of Kandy to one near the hill known as Adams Peak...some 5000 steps high which takes 7hrs to ascent and descent.....
I have no intention of finding out ! Not least, because those who are going will start at 2am!...no chance..I like my sleep 😴
In the morning after breakfast, il go a little way up till I've had enough and then mooch around the local shabby chic shops near our hotel.
The bus journey was interesting, with chance to capture some of the shops in photos.
There are loads of scrap metal type car places with all manner of spare parts stacked up....from one door to half a car...front or back ...take your pick...or maybe a spare seat or ..well anything really !.its surreal!
The buses fascinate me..they are soooo ramshackle !!and held together with good will... There's no air-conditioning, it seems, just open windows and doors. Also they are really high of the ground though only single decker.
At one point we stopped to watch the locals playing cricket...they all became very interested in us ..especially the children and we had a lovely time just smiling and having photos..they were keen for selfies
We also stopped at a tea shop which serves and sells the locally picked tea.
Later we passed the fields where the locals were picking tea leaves ..the sacks they carry are wrapped round their heads! ..can't believe that ..or why it's that way but we are going to a tea factory in next couple of days.so maybe we will find out.
Its not Yorkshire tea tho...that is from India...we've looked it up...a few people on the tour like Yorkshire tea...also available in Australia according to those on the tour from Melbourne.
Some of the Group are disgruntled with the tour guide.
I think he's lovely and felt for him last night when walking to Mass as he's feeling the dissatisfaction, because he told me.
It's stemmed from 2 of the Group having a great afternoon tuk tuk tour ,booked independently and relaying all they'd seen..Others then felt we should have been told about things that were available..although all are experienced travellers with access to the same Get your Guide app !......group dynamics!🤪😫🫤🤦♀️🤦♀️
The countryside is very green and heavily forested I'd say with vast and numerous lakes seen on most journeys on the tour regardless of area.
We are certainly covering some serious mileage and whilst the group tour method is not my ideal..it is serving a purpose.もっと詳しく
A quiet day
2025年4月21日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
As several of the group had attempted the ascent of Adams Peak, a 5000 steps ascent taking 7to 9hrs in total., today was a quiet one
I went for a walk round the stalls/shops before we moved on to the next place.
This meant i got a closer look at the buses ..inside is as decorated as outside. I also saw the prison bus ..which could not have in any way contained any offenders and was actually empty !
One of the group fell yesterday, causing a wound to the bridge of her nose...for which she went to hospital...The ambulance had very little in it by way of equipment but did have a spare tyre!
.The Community hospital was apparently deserted ..zero waiting time.
On the way to the next hotel , we stopped at a Tea Castle for lunch...lovely place and lovely views
The area is significant for tea picking and we saw the ladies working hard ,with the collection bags attached to their heads .we also saw them around a wagon with the full bags of leaves
Tomorrow, instead of today, we will go to the tea factory
We also passed an impressive Hindu temple en route.
There's been some lovely scenery on the bus today including views of Adams Peak, a lake with islands in and 3 or 4 waterfalls.
We are staying, in an area known as Little England! Iv seen, signs for Somerset and Edinburgh and to cap it all we are staying in The Blackpool hotel ! ...though no beach anywhere in sight and the hotel exceeds ,( just ) anything Blackpool has to offer..its quite colonial in appearance and decor .
On arrival at the hotel there was a red carpet ,we acquired another red dot on the forehead and had to light a candle in the reception
To complete the concept of being in England the weather is overcast , not hot and raining!😅🤦♀️...It hasn't made me homesick.
One good thing about bus touring ,is the luggage, once in reception or outside your room, is taken care of and magically arrives at the next hotel without any effort.
It then gets brought to your next room..bit different than my travels round Japan, where i was lugging my luggage on and off trains and up and down stairs as there were surprisingly few escalators or lifts .
Iv been given a time lapse video that illustrates ,to some extent the queueing to see the Buddha's tooth in Kandy which i will include in today's videos.もっと詳しく
Tea and Train...bucket list ticked!
2025年4月22日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C
Leaving the Blackpool hotel! In Sri Lanka this morning we went to see the tea making process. I couldn't believe how old the machinery was!
Moving on we had chance to pick some tea leaves.
Later we looked round a local town where the post box was from Derby . The market was very smelly with lots of flies around the food
We saw a police tuk tuk ...!
However my bucket list wish to hang off the moving train was fulfilled...it was hilarious and soo much fun..I could literally open the train door and hang off the side!もっと詳しく
Waterfalls ,Elephants and Safari lodges
2025年4月23日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C
Outside our hotel this morning there was a street market
Our trip today took us past a fantastic waterfall through some lovely scenery on to an elephant rescue centre where the babies are fed with milk via a tube and a funnel
We called at yet another temple ..I wasn't impressed but actually..it wasn't a hike to get to and wasn't up a huge hill ..It was actually worthwhile and impressive
We then had a drive through the wildlife park seeing more elephants,,also crocodiles and water buffalo. For each animal the camouflage of their body was incredibly well suited to the environment
We stayed the night in tented safari camp though with ensuite which, although covered was partially open to the outside, giving the feeling of an outside shower . ..also sleeping under a mosquito net ...for the first time. Slightly anxious getting up during the night but all was wellもっと詳しく
Cinnamon, Moonstone and Tsunami
2025年4月24日, スリランカ ⋅ 🌙 27 °C
After a shower which felt like an outside shower at the tented safari camp, our tour continued.
Our driver remembered i had asked to get a photo of the scrap metal place and stopped just for me
We continued to seeing cinnamon being grown and turned into useful products
At the same place we saw how moonstone is mined ....this was alarming....men going down a wooden ladder and working in a tunnel for 30mins on ,30mins off ,it really made me question what actually has to happen to get this product..and its really hot..apparently it is possible to stand up in the tunnel...but zero health and safety conditions
We continued onwards to experience the sobering reality of the boxing day Tsunami....
A 17metre High Buddha has been built..to the same height as the tallest waves....as a memorial to those who died .An exhibition shows photos of bodies strewn all over the street and the absolute carnage the water caused , coming inland as far as 500metres .
There is a huge grave on the beachside, for many of the victims.
In all i think we were told 35000 people died
It was stark to see derelict buildings along this stunning coastline, knowing the water had caused this damage. Though there are signs of recovery, I felt moved to make a donation to the charity
Moving on we did a walking tour of Galle and although tricky, managed to connect with the coffee club at home during their catch up and whilst walking around Galle
Final bucket list item achieved as we went to see the Stick Fishermen and I got chance to try it...really funny, they were sitting down doing nothing until we arrived and then went to sit on their sticks for photos.
Tonight I have a room which opens directly on to the beach...amazing...but the realisation of the power of the sea 🌊 after today is definitely a consideration.
We have learned and seen a lot about products growing in Sri Lanka...50 varieties of banana Inc a honeymoon banana..!!
3months rice growing then 3months veg growing ongoing cycle . Multiple spices ,mango and coconuts 🥥
We have seen men working barefoot in water all day in the paddy fields.もっと詳しく
Quiet day with an amazing view
2025年4月25日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
Today , as the tour is drawing to an end there was a free day . I chose to stay around my room, keeping cool enjoying the view and catching up with my plans for New Zealand and Canada
Sophie and Esme called in to my room to sort following me on the penguins app.I was delighted and we intend to catch up at some point in the uk , they are from Nottingham.
Mimi our tour guide had tasked me with getting the additional funds for tips for the driver and the baggage moving person which magically happens between each stop and nothing has been lost .
I realised during the day that I'm.not being collected tomorrow by the turtle sanctuary, but on Sunday, so I went to reception and booked another night here, plus till 5pm.on Sunday...not bad...only $75room only
Iv also had my washing done by the hotel...only the 2nd time iv ever done this
Maura popped in for a chat and we agreed to go to a restaurant I'd spotted yesterday that I really liked ....did so later ,feeling bad about doing so as much had been made of the fact it's my last night with the group.
..I committed to going after we had eaten out but on return realised it was dark and I'd no idea where I was going so not safe to do so
We went to Galle centre for the meal , in an Uber ...iv never ordered an Uber..the local tuk tuk drivers.were furious we had done thisj
Mimi our guide txt me on his return and we had a drink and a chat...he has been concerned that everyone is /has been happy on the tour ...
Photos are some not included so farもっと詳しく
The end of the sri lanka tour ..for me
2025年4月26日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C
Today I bid farewell to the tour group as I am waiting here till tomorrow to be collected by the owner of the turtle sanctuary
Going with the group to Colombo would mean passing where I need to go...and then possibly having to come back....to be with the turtles 🐢
At the time of booking both the tour and separately ,the turtles i couldn't be sure that I could rely on the tour driver and guide to drop me off ....having met them ..I now know they would have...but kept to my plan for simplicity
The tour has served a purpose and I think I managed to find a way to do both my own thing and join in with others .. Some of the group would like to follow my travels and some Il send wots app pics... I'm delighted to have made friends with some of the Group and there others are people who have been in my life for the tour and that's where it stops....I'm sure that's mutual.
We had breakfast as a group, gave the tips to the driver ,magic bag moving guy ,who we never saw but our bags magically arrived at each hotel, and Mimi the tour guide.. Following a group photo ,they piled on the bus and I waved them off at the gate....felt bit strange
Another quiet day in which I was seriously grateful to be able to see Pope Francis funeral.
Never did I imagine when I changed my O2 contract to cover my travels ,that I'd be in Sri Lanka watching the Pope's funeral ,in Rome..and having to accommodate the time difference
I've learnt that the Pope and I have the same birthday...that he knew his own mind and once made up that was that . He'd listen to his advisors but not heed their views and would go places (without considering risk, )saying if you're not coming, fine, I'm going anyway ! ..i know .some might say all this about me too..clearly a 17th December thing! He also wasn't afraid to do things differently.and fought hard for the causes he believedon . ..I can relate to that R...An additional affinity comes from both my Dad and the Pope being born in Buenos Aires and mum's godson Edmund being a Jesuit ,( now in Taiwan)as Pope Francis was. A wonderful Pope may he rest in peace.
Negombo, here in Sri Lanka is very Catholic and is apparently known as Little Rome.
Returning to the restaurant this evening for dinner was odd as the huge table our group had shared was empty and apart from me there were only 10 other people for dinner.
The group have moved on to the final hotel in Colombo which is apparently a fabulous hotel as Maura was kind enough to ring me. It has robot room service but is AI generated ..unlike the cafe in Tokyo
Photos will include a few from across my time on the tour, not added as yetもっと詳しく
Time for the turtles
2025年4月27日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
Overnight my electricity failed at the hotel so a hot sticky and restless night .
Had another day relaxing round the hotel before being picked up and transferred to the turtles 🐢 sanctuary
I arrived about 6.30pm..The accommodation is mega basic but at least have a fan and air con and my biggest worry, I don't have to share..
Dodging Sri Lanka food has finally caught up with.me at dinner!🤦♀️
Apparently the sanctuary was hit by the Tsunami.
Dudley, the owner turned to the Internet afterwards, to get volunteers to help rebuild it and care for the turtles.
On my journey here which in very chilled Sri Lanka time was one hour ( actually 2hrs!) I saw 2 cows wandering on the main road...noone bothers about this .
The tuk tuks don't heed road rules and there's a lot of beeping horns ,when overtaking them, to alert them of intention to pass.
The other volunteers are from Taunton, Zurich and somewhere between France and Italy.
The girl from Taunton has been here 3 times now..the other 2 are chatting inn German!
Looking at the day tour options from here I realise I have covered everything that is on offer apart from the cultural dancing .Our tour guide has said we have done approx 1200 miles on the tour .もっと詳しく
Hands on turtles
2025年4月28日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C
After an uneasy night in the accommodation, which is grim and with which I'm struggling we rose to breakfast and an introductory presentation
Meals are included in the price I paid to come here.
Iv ascertained that volunteers get Friday afternoon and weekends off , that the other volunteers go away for the weekend so il leave on Friday , not Sunday and go to stay in the hotel in Colombo that my tour group went to...or a similar one
This mornings tasks included shifting bricks to build a new tank for the turtles. Also actually handling them to move from one tank to another for feeding. They are fed alternate days with tuna.
We had to create a hole in the sand to bury the eggs that were laid overnight ..approx 200.these will stay underground until ready to hatch at which point they appear on the surface and are transferred to the tank
They are released to the sea at night / late evening. making sure there are no predators around
The project releases 60% of the turtles and keeps 40%
This afternoon I had a go at brick laying much to the amusement of the proper brickies and making sure it was above the intended water level as I didn't want to be responsible for a leak
I also helped with teaching English to a 17yr old boy and his 6yr old sister
Releasing the 1day old baby turtles was hugely moving and emotional..to see them scurrying for the sea , instinctively knowing what they had to do and then to see them swept up in a wave ,knowing they're on their way into an uncertain future in the ocean...survival rates are poor
They have to make that journey to feel the sand as they return in years to come to the same beach to lay their own eggs
The eggs look like a golf ball or hard boiled egg but are actually quite squishy...have to be careful not to squeeze too hard
A really good 1st dayもっと詳しく
Turtles Tank Cleaning
2025年4月29日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C
This morning we once again dug holes in the sand ,in the hatchery area, and buried the eggs that had been laid and collected overnight. The hole is as deep as the full length of my arm..the turtles 🐢 hatch from that depth after about 48-55 days and just emerge on the surface. The temperature of the sand determines whether it's male or female. There's more males if the temperature is cool.
After the burying of the eggs we were involved in the cleaning of the turtle tanks ...a weekly exercise that involves emptying the water via very makeshift drainage to the sea. Then scrubbing the inside walls and removing algae that builds up .also removing sand from the bottom of the tank...it was hard work in 30degree heat although under cover. Its full on mucky work and also soggy..
The bonus treat is being able to scrub the turtles shell with sand
They actually love it and wriggle this way and that as much as to say...ooh bit more there and bit more here. Iv learnt they have nerve endings in their shell and so can feel it..sometimes I've tickled the shell when they are in the water and the same reaction happens...its amazing.
We had two local schools visiting today and other people from all over the world, India, Russia and Wigan !🤣..not seen anyone from Manchester for so long ...was nice to talk about local stuff and I previously worked at Wigan Infirmary too. . Still not made me homesick!
After lunch we had a tuk tuk ride to the supermarket and I bought body wash shampoo and conditioner ,laughing cow cheeses ,which are a taste of home and chocolate.
This evening we witnessed some turtles hatching , climbing up from the depth of the sand hole.
They were placed in a tank and will be released tomorrow
We once again released approx 200 1day old turtles into the ocean ..and 5 families also joined the event ,paying 5000rupees (£12 )to release a bucket of 25 turtles per bucket
Returning to the accommodation I faced the challenge of a shower in a shower with no shower head !
I gave up and did various contortions to get my legs in the sink ,one at a time , wash my hair under the drizzle of the sink tap
And other essential ablutions!
In clean clothes we went to a nearby bar.
On the way back we walked passed the "spa " next door to our accommodation which apparently is a knocking shop....and there was an obvious queue!
One of the volunteers has a birthday on fri so we are trying to organise entertainment here on Thurs evening..hopefully fire eating, acrobats and traditional dancing ...at my instigation
I've made plans today to have a taxi to Colombo on Friday afternoon where I've booked into the best hotel I can find, which was experienced and recommended by the aussies on my tour ...to compensate for here
There are photos showing how this place was flattened by the Tsunami with the turtles being displaced. And they've had to rebuild it The owner was on a motorbike and got swept into a tree when it happened
In terms of the accommodation I'm.counting the days, but in terms of the turtles it's a pretty amazing privilege to be involvedもっと詳しく
Turtles and school tours
2025年4月30日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C
Today started with sieving any debris from the top of the tanks ,to ensure the tanks stayed clean .we also buried more hatchlings .. Tours today were mainly busloads of excited children and it was lovely to see just how excited they were.
It's important here that the children appreciate the turtles as there is a poaching problem where eggs are stolen and then sold to restaurants..to make turtle soup..So the turtle project pay slightly more, per egg to people who bring them in ,to try to reduce the poaching problem
I took the opportunity to go out and checkout the inside of the bus they'd come in.
Today its been raining so that hindered our actions, but when it stopped we had the unpleasant task of digging into the used / hatch holes to retrieve any shells and possibly any turtles that hadn't made it to the surface
I got utterly covered in sand
I was spared some of this task by being told to go and teach English to 2 children...one age 12 the other age 6 ...tricky as 2 different levels , very limited resources ,no indication what's required, so winging it ...big style ! I had the 12yr old reading Mr messy ! And then writing some English...trying to correct annunciation of the word Week to not sound like Veek was interesting!..the 6yr old is super bright ,knowing all English alphabet and numbers to 20 in English and just wants to do colouring !🤣🤦♀️
This evening we released another batch of one day old turtles 🐢 and another 6 families paid to be able to do so as well.
Tonight iv been given the opportunity to see the mother turtles lay their eggs but it could be at anytime during the night and I still remember seeing it in Borneo on turtle island with Matthew 20yrs ago so although initially I said Id go Ive decided to give it a miss.もっと詳しく
An eventful day
2025年5月1日, スリランカ ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
With the realisation that it was one of the volunteers birthday on 2nd may as well as the very rare albino turtles birthday on 3rd may and my last day on the 2ndmay we decided to have a party. At no notice whatsoever the son of owner of the project managed to arrange some entertainment .a group of guys who could do dance, mask dancing and fire eating..the cost between 5 of us was only £20 each..for a half hour show
Before starting at the project we took a tuk tuk ride to the supermarket for drinks snacks, banners, balloons 🎈 streamers
and to the off licence to get alcohol which cannot be bought in a supermarket
On the way we.passed a herd of cows sitting at the side of the road ...quite normal for sri lanka, they sometimes wander across the road
Activities at the project were hard today as following on from the usual burying of the eggs , there is restoration building work so.we were involved in shifting bricks and carrying buckets of cement. The so called cement was like soup...it was soo watery .To create new posts to hold up a roof they are using drain pipes with an iron bar inside and concrete poured inside the drainpipes. It's seriously basic! There is an expectation that we will shift all manner of materials and health and safety simply doesn't exist..as there was a serious suggestion one of us uses the electric drill to break up some concrete, bearing in mind the day before the electric lights had spontaneously sparked , giving off sparks and blown !
In the afternoon we decorated the albino turtles tank ..its a favourite at the sanctuary and due to being albino wouldn't survive in the wild.
The toddler of a family decided to put fingers in the tank and got nipped by the turtle...hysterical child followed ..and yet again I found myself supplying cosmopore ..but gave to the mother to put on as child went crazy when I approached..same child later released turtles into the sea ...but kept wanting one when it saw them running.
After dinner at 7pm.we were ready for our party..5 .volunteers
plus the owners and their son
A private and v special show out on the front lawn ...for about half an hour after which I decided to have a go on the bongo drums as sober as ever...just saying
When it was over we had music from a wi fi speaker playing loudly till 11ish ...nobody cared
We (I) arranged a cake for the volunteer and she decided it was her best ever birthday
Then the owner got a call to say 2 turtles were on the beach laying their eggs
We went across to the beach in silence and the pitch black as lights are likely to spook the turtle and she would return to the sea
The 1st turtle was struggling to find dry sand to start making a hole ..but the 2nd had begun.to lay her eggs ....150 in total. It was an incredible experience and made me realise that when we were in Borneo we didn't have as close an encounter watching the mother turtle.
Once she has laid her eggs she covers them over and returns to the sea within 2 to 4hrs
We returned to the accommodation and after tidying up called it a night
In one epic and momentous moment I emailed the NMC today to relinquish my registration with effect from.11th May 2025...44yrs after starting at Mauldeth House ..at which point I'd no idea that 44yrs later I'd be on a round the world trip and emailing to say ...its time cancel my registration . ..not an easy thing to let go of as its not been just a job but has been who you are as a person. Has probably helped to be away to actually take the plunge ,though I'd not have achieved enough hours for revalidation in August with all the time I've had off in the last 3yrs ( 6months post surgery, 3months post mum's departure and retirement August 2024. - and was only doing 17hrs a week whn in ....and then holidays..) so time to park the Nursing career and on to the next chapter..もっと詳しく

旅行者Ah Jo, am sure that is an emotional decision. You’ll never not be a nurse though - look at you with your stock of Cosmopore and caring! ❤️ It all looks fantastic and I’m enjoying all the blogging - said at work yesterday, I feel like I’ve actually been to some of those places!

Jo LoweAh maeve thank you !🧡... I think it is too inherent in all of us ...and and such will always be the case.

旅行者Definitely the registration isn't the reason you are caring and supportive. But a milestone after all those years. Xx
Final day with the turtles 🐢
2025年5月2日, スリランカ ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C
The morning started with creating 6 holes in the hatchery and burying the eggs laid by the turtles last night...300 between the two turtles 🐢
There were several busloads of children this morning all of whom waved at us and wanted to shake hands with us and generally found us amusing as there were lots of giggles especially if we spoke to them...possibly 1st time Some of them may have seen a white person, it occurred to me.
It is an extremely hot day and due to the school groups filling the place and the building work ,which didn't require our help, we didn't really do much ,which i was grateful for as hadn't gone to bed till 2am and up at 8am.
However we did start a beach clean up...this was a stark experience! ..In a few minutes and within a very small area I collected half a sack of plastic that had washed up on the beach ⛱️...a Castrol GTX oil bottle and several plastic water bottle. This is the kind of thing you hear about on tv and perhaps pay no heed ...but I've now seen the reality and its not good..all 5 of us achieved half a sack of rubbish each in under 10mins in a very concentrated area.
If you think about this in relation to the 1day old turtles we send into the ocean each night...it makes you think differently..
I was told there have been occasions when at least 10 full sacks of rubbish have been collected.
We were called back from the beach because it was too hot..in the region of 32degrees .My flip-flops were burning under my feet so I was relieved
So a few more / final photos with the turtles, then lunch and goodbyes before leaving for Colombo and the posh hotel reccomended by the aussies on my tour....a 2hr drive...( 1hr Sri Lankan time ..they lack any real sense of time or urgency..but everything seems to happen anyway)
The owner's son Delan, took me in a sports car ,belonging to his friend ,currently in Italy 🇮🇹.
Apparently Delan had rung his friend in Italy and asked to borrow the car !🤣... I've no idea if Delan was insured to drive it and didn't ask 🤣🤣. This is very typical Sri Lanka way of doing things
However, we were stopped by the police who were at a roadside checkpoint.
Apparently we were let off as I was in the car.
It seems there's a funny attitude amongst locals....I saw the bus stopping for a white person but drive past a local person and possibly the similar attitude happens with the police letting Delan continue 🙄..he did say we'd got off with being pulled over because he had me in the car.
I was told by a member of staff the bus drivers like the white people but will drive past the locals and when I was with this person waiting for the bus,it was going to stop...being unaware of this attitude I finished my conversation waved her goodbye assuming she'd now get on the bus but it drove past her
I arrived at the hotel..it is indeed posh .It is the only hotel I've experienced since leaving home that has currency exchange.
It has chandeliers and a white grand piano in the Lobby .it's also huge .
I had to wait for the room to be prepared as the previous people had late checkout 🙄
However it's a Huge corner room with wrap around balcony overlooking the sea.
The sea here is very different..not as wild and not as beautiful...with the railway track running right next to the sea ,just like going to north Wales! .The road is also in front of the hotel.
The trains are utterly knackered! making our trains look half decent .People do hang off them .. there is no air-conditioning so probably cooler.
The room has a window between the bathroom and the bedroom which iv experienced in a few Sri Lanka hotels...but no idea why this is so....glad I'm not sharing with anyone ,though there is a blind...iv not bothered with that...so can see the sea from whatever I'm doing in the bathroom
It has ,inexplicably a phone, in the toilet. There is also room service so presumably you can dial for room service whilst on the loo.🤣
Did make me think tho that a phone in the bathroom at home would be sensible future proofing! As is a tuk tuk not a mobility scooter..much more fun ! ..a company from Altrincham imports them and will put on any designs you want 😉
The shower is big enough to have a party in ! If you chose to do so ..same with the bath.
1st things first...rang reception for glass of milk and for laundry collection ..
On arrival the waiter rang a doorbell on my room..couldn't believe it ...he was just delivering the milk.
Another ring on the door was the laundry person, who wanted to know what time I'd like it back..
Very soon after he left he rang in a panic that my white t shirt was stained ( yep ..covered in turtles and sand etc) Plus, did I want the items returned on hanger or folded !
Next , a shower..which I simply stood in for ages ...no more wash bowl contortions!..amazing as was rainforest kind
Finally feeling fresh and in clean clothes , I went to explore the hotel and also some food.
I discovered shops, where I bought two new t shirts and a godsend of an underwear shop where I renewed various things!
There's also a video games area a kind of cinema and a gym
I discovered the infinity pool and the jacuzzis in a rooftop garden which is exclusively for guests..both absolutely amazing..
In the restaurant on the roof I chose a chicken wrap with wedges and ketchup..plus a mixed fruit drink.
I felt I needed a red wine 🍷! 🤣...but they didn't have any Merlot or Malbec, so I managed without.
It was the Best meal I have had since leaving the UK ...and no rice to be seen...even better!!!
After dinner I wandered to the spa and booked massage for tomorrow...hopefully there'll be no large wooden chests of drawers units to get into...that are being passed off as steam bath.
I returned to my room and had look outside on the balcony before time for sleep.
I am really pleased to have done the turtles project. There's no doubt that after various standards of hotels, ( most good or very good) the accommodation was basic..and a big shock 😳 😐..which took some days to get over...but to be fair it was all clean ,the food was acceptable, with 3 proper meals per day.
Actually I began to adapt and feel more at ease..not sure if that was because each passing day was nearer to leaving or genuinely adapting....I do think possibly a genuine adaptation.
The owners were lovely friendly caring people who are doing their absolute best. They have rebuilt the project since the Tsunami and they deserve being supported..
I enjoyed the interaction with the turtles being allowed to handle them all...large, small, 1day old ,just an egg ,was special !
Being able to tickle the neck and see them stay still whilst I did it or stroke their shells in which they have nerve endings and see them stay still or wriggle around as much as to say ,do it here bit more there...was fabulous..
They swim off when had enough and will splash you if you do it and it's not wanted.
Giving the information to visitors, even tho I had to get my facts together v quickly to be able to give a credible tour was satisfying.
It was a chance to meet people from all over the world....India,Russia, Poland, Oz ,France,Sri Lanka and Wigan ...to mention just a few
I loved seeing the Sri Lankan children and their excitement in seeing the turtles.
I enjoyed trying to teach the children that came for English lessons.
I was less keen or maybe less prepared for tank cleaning and building work and probably didn't throw myself into these tasks as enthusiastically as the other volunteers.
I think tank cleaning is mentioned in the trip information but read so long ago that I'd forgotten.
The heat and physical work in 30+ degrees is a challenge ...and I know I will have the same again in Borneo for twice as long ,so a good starter experience on reflection.
Its been grounding ,a reminder that you're not there for posh hotel and rest but to make a contribution with an open mind and to embrace doing whatever is needed
The posh hotel will wait for your return and believe me It's all the more enjoyable for being so.もっと詳しく
Columbo .My Final day in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
2025年5月3日, スリランカ ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C
So 3weeks in Sri Lanka has rolled round
It's certainly been a roller coaster..delivering challenges and bucket list opportunities
Challenges in terms of group tour travel yet finding a way to do my own thing not just go into group think mode and follow like a sheep..I think i did manage to find a balance...there were some hardened group tourers who had definite views and expectations of fellow travellers. On this trip I saw more temples than I care to remember!
However ,hanging off a moving train seeing tea being picked and processed plus stick fishing opportunities were definitely highlights and bucket list experiences. We covered approx 1200miles which id never have achieved solo....also a bonus..The tour covered my concerns about safety in this country which was a concern as I couldn't quite work out how safe I'd be solo
The turtle project was another challenge in terms of accommodation and some of the expectations but I know I was adapting .The actual experience with the turtles was a highlight and very emotional at times especially releasing the babies into the sea. Each night releasing another batch and wondering how the previous batches were getting on
Today after a lazy start and a buffet breakfast I caught up with my penguins app...until it was time to go on the Complimentary City Tour...and just when I thought I'd finished getting on tour buses for a while
We were taken to 5 key places in the city...the 1st a museum which I wasn't in the right frame of mind for. So I took few pics and came out. 2nd the independence day memorial. 3rd a temple which after all the others I'd seen i swore I couldn't be bothered with but actually it was surprisingly good .4th was parliament building and a specific park opposite it.Finally the area on Galle road with a grass verge Sri lanka flag and cannons .This area is significant for independence day celebrations and other events
On.my return I went for a massage and facial at the spa..it was excellent. I suddenly realised as she started she'd jumped on the bed also to do the treatment....to think ...I'd been offered a male or female to do this 😂...imagine!!
After the massage I had video call with Math and then met two of the volunteers from the project who had come this evening to stay the night.
I enjoyed their company .We ate dinner and said our goodbyes. For them , time to go to the on site "pub" with Dj....but for me packing, penguins and sleeping..but not before I'd arranged room service breakfast for 6.30am.🤪prior to airport transfer at 7.30am....I don't trust sri lanka version of 45mins to the airport so I am overcompensating ..even if it is Sunday...roads here are crazy all the time.
All in all I'm.glad Ive been here and had the experiences I have had. I definitely feel I've done Sri Lanka from my perspective and I I don't see myself returning anytime soon ...unlike others who have been i don't love it here , nevertheless I'm glad to have done it .もっと詳しく
Goodbye Sri Lanka. Hello Singapore
2025年5月4日, シンガポール ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
Waking at 6am Sri Lanka time ,I finished getting ready to leave .The doorbell on my room rang and my room service breakfast was delivered. After Id finished I went to reception for my taxi to the airport. I'd been told 45mins but Sri Lankan timing is mega casual, so I over compensated. In the event it only took 35mins as Sun morning and no traffic. I'd been unable to check in on line ,but wandering in side the airport I was unable to find anyone from Sri Lankan airlines..eventually did so and was sent to a ticket office just outside the airport entrance...ticket sorted, they do bag scanner before check in ...Its actually quite a small airport. Once check in was complete, it was only about 8.30am and my flight wasn't till 12.30pm. I had a look round duty free and the shops were a bit different than usual and then succumbed to the business lounge ...and set myself up with a phone charger and cups of tea to wait for boarding.
It was a much larger aircraft than the Sri Lankan plane from Bangkok to Negombo, so instead of simply wider seats it did have flat bed capabilities..I was glad of this ,given the early start and used it once the meal was over.
The sun was setting as we arrived in Singapore which also involved the plane doing a number of turns The very nice guy sitting next to me helped with putting my luggage up and down from the overhead locker
Arrival in Singapore confirmed what everyone says ...this airport is Vast. Immigration was fully automatic
I tried to find out how i can send stuff home after Borneo and get some Singapore currency
A taxi dropped me at my hotel and for the 2nd time today i had room.service ...which I had to choose from the menu on the TV!
Switching the TV on to see a personal welcome was a suprise ,same with the room landline.
Singapore is 2.5hrs ahead of Sri Lanka, but I think 7hrs ahead of the UK.もっと詳しく
Super Singapore
2025年5月5日, シンガポール ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
Singapore has a nice vibe..Despite incredibly high skyscrapers it doesn't have thr sterile and clinical feel of Tokyo.
It's clean ,seems calm and feels safe
At breakfast I realised I'd not actually got a plan for Singapore and had no idea where I was in relation to key places. Googled Get Your Guide which revealed a Hop on Hop off bus ..perfect as I was also tired but I could stay on the bus and see some of the sights.
The bus was available close to the hotel ,even better...there were two routes red and yellow, it took me a while to realise I was on the yellow route which included the Botanic Gardens ,Orchard Rd Chinatown, Clarke Key ,Raffles Hotel
After the tour I went in St Andrews Cathedral. Opposite, was a shopping centre called the Aldelphi ! ..(mum taught at Adelphi Grammar School in Salford ) and at Clarke Quay a shopping centre called The Circuit, both poignant !
An almighty thunderstorm which i am.frightened of anyway resulted in my taking refuge in an Art gallery.. something I would not otherwise have done .Browsing round the shop ,I found a penguin keyring ,which despite it being expensive, as everything is here ,it seemed somewhat essential purchase and is now attached to my cross body bag ....so literally will have a 🐧 penguin with my everywhere...it hasn't got a name yet....
Chatting with staff in the art gallery shop led to visiting the Funan shopping mall...where I found a DHL shop to send stuff home, a Brompton bike shop ,which is an English brand of folding bikes but I've never seen a shop in the UK, numerous aesthetic treatment shops and the inevitable Macdonalds. There are soo many shops and malls here. The shops, as in Sydney go underground and have numerous eating outlets and food courts.I decided to have a pizza slice. I was given a fob with a number on ,it vibrates when your order is ready to be collected.
Eventually returned to my room having bought milk and kit kat.
At 5pm I got a taxi to the meeting point for the night bus tour
Singapore at night is vibrant and so many lights...Blackpool will seem tame by comparison.
It rained ! So the open top bus wasn't great for some but I was under cover, upstairs at the back
In the daytime we had passed the Marina bay sands iconic hotel ,which is vast ! But lit up at night, is just even more awesome.
I'm incredibly excited to realise il be staying there for 3nights as they had a mid week deal.
The bus took us to a bridge where i couldn't believe the number of tankers that had dropped anchor in the water in the vicinity of our location. Then to Satay street where there is a hawker market...a place for street food..similar idea to Morroco but on a much smaller scale and less frenetic..
We were able to try satay from stall number 8...best satay in Singapore acc trip advisor.
We were told there is a legal obligation to return your plate and rubbish to the stall or risk being fined .
Onwards to the Gardens by the bay for a lights to music show which played recognisable English music. I really enjoyed the show.
Once the bus tour was over I was dropped at Clarke Quay, apparently the closest stop to my hotel...I'd no idea!🤣..
As it was lively and I decided to investigate..which resulted in an ice cream and a 10pm. River cruise...followed by a taxi back to my hotel...
A good 1st day in Singapore 🇸🇬.もっと詳しく
I nearly forgot today is Marina bay sand
2025年5月6日, シンガポール ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
I was full of intentions to go to on the red route of the hop on Hop off bus today and then to sentosa island for the rest of the day ...until an email arrived at breakfast telling me it was time to check out of my hotel...I'd not clicked that today I'd be going to stay at the iconic Marina bay sands hotel...so plans changed and I packed my things having made arrangements to have the room till 1pm. I then caught up with my penguins..
At 2pm.I got a taxi to the Marina bay sands hotel..1st impressions were that it was chaotic 😳..some one appeared to intercept my bags and whisk them.away..I had to queue for pre registration. Registration took ages and I was told to expect a txt saying when my room.was ready.. Its a vast place with 2000 rooms
I went out and caught the hop on bus and completed the red route which passed through little India and Chinatown ..however overall it wasn't as good as the two trips yesterday.
On my return to the marina sands i went in the convention and shopping centre. It is also vast and in a copy of a design math and I saw in Vegas, it has boat ride down the middle of the shops
As the shops are not on the level of the Cambodia night market there is nothing i need from any of them.. I had a cup of tea and an éclair at the cafe over the water and then had a boat ride.
Finally time to collect my key,tho hadn't received txt message re room
I wasn't assisted to my room in this vast place which I thought was poor there are 3 towers and it's very confusing. I had various rides in various lifts till I cracked which lift ,which floor and which room
Undoubtedly the room was lovely but my primary concern was could I see the garden over the bay which is what I'd paid for ..answer....no not clearly there were bushes on the outside of the balcony. I had to jump to see over them....So ,I went back to reception and asked to change rooms.. 2 floors lower and in what I think is a slightly smaller ( though still vast room ) i have a balcony where i can see the gardens over the bay and the vast number of ships in the bay as well as the Cruise ships 🚢 .
The level is overwhelming and very emotional, because of how this has become possible. I video called Math and as mags also messaged she too got the guided tour
The toilet here ..lifts the lid automatically, when yiu draw close to it ! There's also various ablution programmes and a warm seat as in Japan
I cannot believe the toiletries are actually...Jo loves ! .. by jo malone
I've enjoyed an evening looking out over the bay with the patio doors open .もっと詳しく
Super Singapore Skyline
2025年5月7日, シンガポール ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C
A super comfy bed and pillows ensured I woke up late.
Opening the curtains is possible by pressing a button at the side of the bed ! to reveal the view over the bay with the hundreds of ships as far as the eye can see.
To go for breakfast, I found my way in the lift from my floor (22nd) to floor 55 for the lift to floor 57...the much discussed floor with the infinity pool.
It absolutely has the WoW factor. The infinity pool overlooks the city and the marina.
The other side overlooking the gardens over the bay and has jacuzzi to relax in whilst watching the view.
The skyline here is mesmerising. I can look at it for ages.without tiring..
The city side is amazing for the skyscrapers but I think I prefer the Bay view with all the ships and tankers
The view is amazing in the day but has a fabulous vibe lit up after dark ,when everything is lit up
Breakfast menu was fancy ..no bacon butty here! Avocado salmon and egg on toast...! It was OK....not really my thing
Returned to my room and this girl might be living it large right now but when you have to do your hand washing, you have to do it so I dealt with it and adorned the balcony with various items, in a move more suited to benidorm than Singapores posh hotel..So those people looking from the observation deck of the Gardens by the bay ,may have seen more than they bargained for!🤣
Having done 3 bus tours and a night cruise in 2days i decided to relax in my lovely room and get my money's worth out of it ...the next I knew it was 4pm.and I had been asleep for at least 3hrs.
The toilet lid here lifts automatically if it senses you and has various buttons to wash and dry your personal areas as well as a hot bot seat ..this will be an essential purchase when home. The brand is Toto ..also found in Japan...but the lid didn't lift automatically there (tut!tut!)
Whilst on my travels I have been planning a trip to India, but last night had to take the difficult decision to postpone, due to the conflict
I went in search of the observation deck on the 56th floor and as Jan had been texting I rang her ...
I've not and generally don't go in the pool but saw a lady who had paddled to the edges of the infinity pool to take photos so I decided to do the same.
I filmed some of the laser show in the bay
Eventually I had dinner..an Aberdeen Angus burger 🍔 😋 at long last something recognisable to eat...!
There's a lot of fuss here about completing customer service surveys ....constantly..which is a pain....and i don't do them...but being constantly asked to do so is irritating
I returned to my room to discover that housekeeping had been in and closed the curtains made the bed and moved things...not impressed...as I'd had a phone call earlier asking if I wanted housekeeping...no thanks..so rang them and stated no housekeeping for tomorrow
I actually watched tv on this cinema size screen...to see the papal conclave starting..too tired to wait the hour for the 1st ballot as midnight here at that point.. but i felt sure it would take more than one ballot ,so settled to sleep.もっと詳しく
Today is all about Raffles Afternoon Tea
2025年5月8日, シンガポール ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C
Another late breakfast, thanks to super comfy bed and idling time looking at the ships in the bay..which are huge and there's so many!
Following breakfast I decided to go across the road to the Art ,Science Museum as they had a mind and body exhibition. It turned out to be a rather wierd interactive experience which at one point required you to choose 3 words based on the answer to three questions. It then generates a personal poem based on the 3 words...quite remarkable.
A further interactive thing needed you to raise your arm then dance around and it generates a kind of tarot card ..which in my case was surprisingly appropriate.
There was a haze room that is supposed to relax the mind and focus the senses sitting in a hammock chair...too wierd so came out .
I encountered a couple from New Zealand having a brew and started chatting with them for a while ..the man was from Liverpool originally and the lady's family were from North Manchester. They now lived in Auckland but had also lived in France.
Time to get ready for Raffles afternoon tea..so shower and ironing the dress I'd bought specifically for this auspicious occasion.
A taxi took me to the iconic hotel
In stark contrast to the Marina Bay Sands which is a modern marvel, Raffles has retained its dignified, sophisticated, calm, ambience and is stunning in its own right
I loved the guy dressed in Indian dress on the front steps .Very distinguished.
In sharp contrast, I made a very undignified entry, not befitting the sophistication and red carpet approach of the place, as I slipped in my flip flops...I only have flip flops and walking boots 😳 so flip flops it was.
It's a simply beautiful place and the service was exceptional.
It felt grown up and special..Mum would definitely have appreciated it's high standards.
I couldn't believe that I was brought a selection of tea samples to choose from and could open the lids and smell each of them before deciding.
...I chose Assan Gold tea , which proved to be delicious and getting cold milk wasn't an issue either !!
( It had taken 3 attempts to get cold milk at breakfast this morning at Mbs)
The afternoon tea food was beautiful and each item was explained .
The waiter brought scones separately with jam and cream and then stayed to chat .We spoke about a mutual experience of going as solo travellers, to Angkor Wat.
The young waiter then thoughtfully returned with some books about Raffles, rather than making much of the fact I was on my own.
It was all rather overwhelming and emotional, not least because I had spotted the grand piano upstairs, in an area for guests only..
I had to ask to go to see it ,even if the answer was No. In explaining why, I got upset.
The staff were brilliant. One went to find someone to take me upstairs. One walked by and noticed i was tearful and quietly returned with tissues ,without fuss or asking questions .
Needless to say ,they accompanied me upstairs to the piano for which I will always be grateful ,because its thanks to Mum.and Dad I am having ALL these experiences.
I had some time in the grounds at Raffles and went to the Long Bar
I didn't have a Gin Sling as I'd had a Large Rose Champagne...surprisingly in an ordinary wine glass...Id like to think I got more champagne as a result!
I will probably do the Gin Sling when return to Singapore, lafter Borneo, as I have 12hrs to wait for the New Zealand flight.
Coming out of Raffles, I spotted the Emirates shop-- of course I had to go over!🤣
I only looked through the door, but was encouraged to go inside
They have a mock up of a 1st class cabin, which they invited me to try ..I didn't need telling twice !
Also they have a selfie photo machine.
By this time I had all 5 staff involved and we had a great time doing the selfies.
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to upload on my phone fast enough and as we'd already had several attempts at doing this selfie machine I thought I best leave it ..
It would have been good as the photo was me with 5 Emirates staff, superimposed on 4 different scenes, the Maldives, Egypt, the 1st class cabin and one other. The staff were lovely and laughing a lot .Apparently the shop had only opened 2 days earlier!🤣
I showed them my photo behind the bar in business class...on the A380, which they were amazed at ..and found funny.
I'm sure they were glad when I left ..!.. but they'd seemingly nothing better to do.and no-one else in the shop.
There's a building I wanted to capture on photograph (.in true Instagram style )It is .the old police station and it has multicoloured shutters.
I saw a picture of it in the Art gallery , but had to work out where it was first .
Having done so, I caught a taxi to the Clarke Quay area and took the pics .
Realising where I was, I walked to the hotel I'd stayed in when I initially arrived ( The Wyndham) and got their help to get a taxi,( in race across the world style!🤣)as I'd no taxi numbers and getting a taxi after Raffles had been a bit tricky.
Returning to my room at the Marina bay sands I've been writing up my day on penguins .Time has passed as Id contemplated going in the infinity pool for that all important photo but now can't be bothered
Considering a room service snack and watch the cinema size tv.
Today is my last full day in Singapore. Tomorrow I fly to Borneo which feels surreal..I've talked about Borneo sooo much and now it's upon me..
Some of today's photos will have to go on tomorrow's entry but then tomorrow is only a transit day anyway so the photos will liven it upもっと詳しく
Bye for now Singapore.Hello Borneo.
2025年5月9日, インドネシア ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C
It's hard to believe that the much discussed trip to Borneo is finally here !
After breakfast at the Marina Bay sands ,(when yet again they brought hot milk when I clearly asked for cold milk)and doing the washing up to pay for my stay!🤣 I set off for Singapore airport 4hrs ahead of my departure time
. I know there is DHL Service at Terminal 1 I just needed to find it, as on my return from Borneo to Singapore, I"ll be off loading some stuff ,in the hope it arrives home. I did find it and also saw the Waterfall and sky train in T1..Jewel shopping area.
The next challenge in this gigantic airport was to find the check in gate ...
With typical Singapore efficiency the gate details were available at 10.30am despite my departure not being till 2.30pm.
So I meandered the epic walk to the gate .
My back pack now weighs a ton,as there was no way I was leaving the Jo Loves toiletries at the Marina bay sands, as Jo does indeed, love them!🤣...especially with the jungle looming.
Whilst sitting at the gate ,the robotic cleaner glided by ...
I flew Economy ..and survived..
Although couldn't cross my legs..I still managed a snooze.
During take off we departed over the Bay and I could see the Marina Bay Sands hotel..
It was funny to think that only a few hours earlier I'd been there.
I'd turned my phone off so unable to get a picture Hopefully will get a photo when returning to Singapore.
Immigration in Borneo went smoothly, thank goodness , though I had to do a ETA electronic arrival form.
The border force guy was very nice about it and helped me.
I was the last person to go through immigration...I told them in UK we say we've saved the best till last...they did understand and laughed..when putting my bags through the scanner here in Balikpapan, I told them I'd nothing exciting inside ( apart from a Kit Kat )They also understood and did laugh 😃.
Whilst waiting for Immigration checks I got talking to 3 aussies, who, are also going to the orangutans, it turns out .
I had a lift arranged for the hotel and wasn't sure how long he'd been waiting so felt unable to watch and have more photos with an amazing group performing at the exit of the airport...did get one quick pic
Balikpapan seems OK, somewhat shabby chic but reasonably clean.
Hotel is premier inn -ish ...and right on the sea front .The sea appears much flatter than in Sri Lanka.
I decided on room service and have risked Balikpapan's version of Spaghetti bolognase....we shall see !🤣
It cost £8.00 equivalent which is 17 000 000 rupiah. Back to things being super cheap...phew after Singapore!
I have a sea view room ...ish with a blot on the landscape derelict building .
The hotel also appears to be on the flight path and I can hear the Mosque, which I quite like ,it reminds me of Munir.❤️
Photos today will include those from yesterday that I didn't upload due to Raffles photosもっと詳しく
A waiting game.
2025年5月10日, インドネシア ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C
Flights to Borneo ( Balikpapan) dictated my arrival yesterday..so today has been something of a waiting game as I don't feel the need to look round Balikpapan, having driven through it yesterday on the way to the hotel.
Breakfast wasn't inspiring 😕 . The sea does come right to the edge with only a tiny bit of sand .
There are guys out in tiny boats, fishing,I presume and on the horizon numerous tankers and other giant ships 🚢
Consequently I have spent most of my time chilling in my room looking at travel options for variousplaces .Mainly staying on my room because its cooler and there's a distinct smell of drains outside.
This evening,I have had roomservice ,to avoid bumping into the aussies I encountered at the airport, who are also staying here.... Chicken and chips ,banana split and pineapple juice ....300370rupiah ...£ 14 equivalent..we could all afford to live her ..no heating bills either ...its hot !
I can hear raucous cheers so presumably there's a sports event ongoing.I will ask reception in the morning what it wasもっと詳しく
Orangutans at last & relinquish registra
2025年5月11日, インドネシア ⋅ 🌧 26 °C
I woke to an email from the NMC confirming my registration has ceased ...44yrs after I started nursing at Mauldeth House ..never thought then I'd be in Borneo, 44yrs later ..In introducing myself to various people today I felt really emotional that I'm no longer a registered nurse....but its time and I know I've no intention of working as a nurse again, though I had and still have intentions of trying to do something nursing related in a volunteer capacity..not sure how this change will affect that intention now
The Driver from the project collected me from the hotel and then two others ...a lady called Dawn from Cleveleys and the other a girl called Lou from Austria who also has British parents and been to uni in the UK.
We have got on well and have rooms next to each other as it happens.
En route to the project we had to have covid testing...I was negative.
Arrival at the sanctuary we experienced a huge tropical thunderstorm with really loud thunder ..I still don't like them...but possibly getting bit better at coping.
The room here is much better than the turtles 🐢 project and I'm coping with the food so far...I have also had a Magnum ice cream....not seen one for 2 months .
We have had induction talk and a walk around some of the project, where we have seen some orangutans.
I'm really pleased with things so far, though disappointed to learn there's no handling of any baby orangutans and not really going to see them either 😕...
The group are nice and once again are mainly from UK or Oz.もっと詳しく

旅行者The orangutan isn't camera shy when eating his /her lunch. Glad you are enjoying yourself. Xx

旅行者Sounds like a very mixed day of emotions Jo. You should be proud of the years you have dedicated to the NHS and you are finally enjoying the retirement time. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect volunteer sideline on your return. However for now, enjoy each day away and make lots of lovely memories. I can’t wait to hear your updates. Glad you got hold of a magnum … have they shrank in size over there too 😂😂 xxxx
Orangutans and Sunbears
2025年5月12日, インドネシア ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C
After breakfast, we went, as a group to wander to the orangutans....seeing them on their feeding station.
We then went to see the fruit store.
The rule here is we don't interact with the orangutans till after a 2nd covid negative test on day 5.
We went to the sunbears which are really cute..
This afternoon we went to the project office and into the observation tower
We have seen how in the year 2000 this area was completely deforested and in the past 25yrs the Charity here have bought over 1000 hectares of land and reforested it ,as well as building islands and development of the areas for orangutan rescue and rehabilitation.
Excitingly we had a ride standing in the back of a hilux jeep whilst riding round the project.
Then ,we were given machetes and had to chop down ferns for the orangutans nests
A good day ..the group is nice and the food is ok.The lady in charge of the project is English from Clitheroe, so there's definitely some English touches ,like Magnum and Cornetto....amazing!もっと詳しく
