    July 26, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    July 26, 2017

Taman Ayun Temple in the village of Mengwi, Badung Regency, Bali

    Taman = Garden
    Ayun = beauty

This temple was built in the 16th century, a great place to see early traditional Balinese architecture.

Statues of Lion symbol can be seen often at the entrance and corners of the building. People in Mengwi village have ceremonies in this temple.

Tajen is held a few hours before the ceremony. Tajen is Balinese gambling of cock fighting.

Traditional Balinese architecture used organic materials. The dark roofs were made using dried coconut leaves.

Religion in Bali is 90% Hindu and 10% Christian, Muslin and others. When you travel through these villages, you would see thousands of them. To me, Bali is an island of temples!

  • Luwak Coffee

Kopi Luwak = Coffee Luwak = Cat Poop Coffee

Photo 1: This cat-like animal in the photo is called luwak.

Photo 2 & 3: Coffee Luwak is produced from the coffee beans that have been digested by a luwak. The feces of the Luwak is then collected.

Photo 4: Beans are picked up, cleaned, roasted and sold as Coffee Luwak.

  • Balinese Traditional Wedding

    July 26, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

July 26 is a perfect day for weddings based on Hindu calendar. Wedding is very important for Balinese Hindu people. The marriage will not be acknowledged in their society if it is not carried out with Balinese traditional Hindu ceremony.

The photo shows you a very traditional wedding ceremony entrance. Women in traditional dresses are standing at the entrance waiting for their guests.

The only thing that confuses me a lot is why they are wearing flip flops!

    Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Getting there isn't easy but you would be rewarded by the beautiful scenery of huge rice terraces. It was a delight to walk along the trekking routes.

Jatiluwih means "very beautiful". The unique Balinese traditional irrigation system is called Subak. This water management method for rice fields in Bali is awarded by UNESCO as World Herritage Cultural Landscape.

UNESCO - United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization

  • Offerings to Gods

    July 26, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This is Balinese daily offerings to their gods. You can these everywhere, entrances of the temples, on the streets in front of the business shops, even inside taxis. This daily offering is part of their routine.

For big ceremonies, women carry their offerings on their heads to the temple, like the one in the picture below.

Bali women use their heads - literally!

Women carry things on their head... things that can even weigh 50kg!!

At the Terraces, women were carrying a full basket of stones on their heads. I ask my private tour guide why not transport these stones by truck. He told me there were no drivable roads for vehicles and these were up and down hills. I am not sure if these are good reasons to use women's heads as transportation though. Stones are to be used to build a bridge.

Due to this anti gravity exercise it is said osteoporosis is very very rare for women here.

  • Tanah Lot

    July 26, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Tanah Lot - Bali Temple in the sea

This is the most visited tourist destination in Bali. Tanah Lot Temple stands on a large solid coral rock overlooking Indian Ocean. Lots of people come here to watch the beautiful sunset.

This rock has a cave where there is a source of natural spring water. Hindus people believe this is holy water with magic power. You can drink it or wash your face with it. After that, you will be blessed with bija (prayer) and given a jepun flower.

I did have two mouthful of the holy water and wash my face with it. I enjoyed the beautiful sea views, sunset as well as the sound of the ocean.

  • Banana Spa Bali (Spa)

    July 27, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    Banana Spa Bali (🍌Spa)

The other day when I was walking around in Seminyak area, I walked by many spa shops. I have not had a chance to sort of search and read reviews about these shops, so I thought I might just pick one nearby, one that caught my eye and interested me.

I walked by this Banana Spa and thought what an interesting name for spa shop! I decided I would go there for a massage that evening. Around 5:00pm I fell asleep due to the jet lag and missed my spa plan.

I woke up at 2:00am and had not much else to do, so I looked up Banana Spa Bali and read reviews about it. Until then did I realize this Banana Spa was "for men" only!!

I was glad I did not just pop in the shop! That would certainly shock all guys in there. I guess my spirit was so pure and simple that I never connected BANANA with men.

  • Saput Poleng

    July 27, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    Saput Poleng

Saput Poleng is defined as a cloth patterned square grid of black and white. On this island this can be found in almost every corner in most places: wrapped around large tree trunks, draped over rocks or statues, worn by healers, temples... etc.

The Hindu philosophy symbolizes the balance between good and evil. The black and white colors represent the good and bad spirits. Balinese culture believes the two elements need to be working as one in individual. Balance (harmony) is the point of Saput Poleng.

  • Bali Cooking Class Part 1

    July 28, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Bali Cooking Class by Chef Dean Fisher - Part 1

Chef Dean Fisher was born in South London and finished his culinary school In UK. Cooking has taken him all over the world, from Cornwall to Perth to Singapore, but Bali is where he's made his home. Chef said once you come to live in Bali, it's difficult to go back.

We had total 10 students today. I am the only Asian. The others are from Melbourne, Perth Australia, Wellington New Zealand and Wales.

The first part is to visit their biggest traditional market in Bali. Open 24/7. The busiest hours is 4:30-6:00am. Women shop early morning everyday and head back home to cook family breakfast.

Balinese eat everything with crackers. At the market you can buy uncooked rice crackers and fry them at home.

A woman was showing us a pig nose. See last two photos.

The answer to a great dish is fresh ingredients and passions.

他們說 You know everything!

  • Double Six Beach

    July 29, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Relaxing Saturday in Bali

Double Six Beach (part of Seminyak beach) is a beautiful sandy beach located on the west coast of Bali. Surfing lesson is available at the beach. I would love to try if I had learned to swim...

I spent an hour strolling along the coast and enjoying the peace. After the walk I just lay back and relaxed on a sun lounger while listening to the sound of the waves lapping against the shore.

  • Zema Healing

    July 29, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

I just had a 90-minute foot massage at Zema Healing. I knew it cost 100,000 Rupiahs and I paid by credit card. I gave my therapist Noah 20,000 Rupiahs as tip. Then I left the shop.

My bank app on the phone sent me a notification for this expense. It showed NT$ 239. I knew it was cheap... but not this cheap!!!

I really feel embarrassed to pay only NT$ 239 for the 90-minute massage! I should have tipped him more.

  • Annual Bali Kite Festival at Sanur

    July 30, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Annual Bali Kite Festival at Sanur

I don't quite remember when my last kiting was. I was so lucky to visit Bali at the right windy season for their ancient tradition event.

This even is a religious festival. The intention is to send messages to Hindu Gods hoping for harvests.

Traditional giant kites are flown by teams from villages. I was amazed to see so many people carrying a kite together as well as a kite that was so big that it needed to be transported by truck.

Watching these kites flying in the sky and believing messages are delivered to Gods must bring Bali people peace, comforts and hopes.

Tegenungan Waterfall in Ubud - an attraction for domestic or foreign tourists

Tegenungan waterfall is popular for its green rocky surroundings and heavy water flow. To get to this waterfall, you have to go down 172 stairs!! Believe me, it's not easy, especially when you need to climb back up another 172 stairs!

  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

    July 31, 2017 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking is one of the most popular tours.

In order to witness the spectacular sunrise, I had to get up and set off really early at 2:00am on July 31, the last day of my Bali Trip.

I arrived at the starting point at 3:30am where the altitude is 1,000km. Mount Batur is still an active volcano. The climbing path is difficult to walk on, not only because it is paved with lots of volcanic stones but also it's very steep.

It took me 2 hours plus to reach the peak at 1,717km above the sea level. I almost wanted to give up a few times during the whole up-climbing. Tough & intensive!

When I arrived at the highest point, it really felt like I was on top of the world. A great number of tourists were excitedly waiting for the sunrise under the dark starry sky.

At 6:30am the sun finally rose and everyone was so amazed at the view! Being at the peak of the mountain, I was surrounded by splendid views of the sunrise and the neighboring Mount Abang hovering above the clouds.

I spent another two hours plus going down. It was easier but it's still quite a challenge because the path is black-sand filled and quite slippery and steep. It could be killing some people's knees.

Trekking at Mount Batur is such a unique and unforgettable experience for me.
