Day 1 Port Hueneme to Salzburg, Austria

    August 31, 2017 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We left Port Hueneme at 11:30 a.m., being driven in a Lincoln Towne Car (Smart Shuttle). Traffic was great on the 405 but heavy around the airport and our driver got a little mixed up, but we were fine. No stress from Jerry! The line to check our bags took 40 minutes, but security was quick, so we were ready to board. Our leg room was amazing!! We found out there was a downside. We were right by the bathrooms so at peak times, we had lots of company! Our only negative for the days was when three Germans decided to stand right in our space to stretch their legs and talk loudly when we were trying to sleep! They hung out there, talking, for roughly an hour!!! So much for any sleep! We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast on the plane and watched a few movies. We landed in Frankfort and had to really rush to go a long way to get on a bus that took us to our small Australian Airlines plane to Salzburg. That was a very short ride and the wait for our luggage was short. We were met by our driver who put us in a large BMW and drove us to the Sheraton Grand Hotel. The hotel was beautiful, staff was friendly, and room was newly renovated so very modern with an extremely comfortable king bed!
We unpacked, took a one hour nap, and went on a walk to explore Salzburg! What a beautiful city! We walked across the river which separates new from old city, although both are older than anything we are used to! We found a little outdoor cafe and ate traditional Austrian food with wine and beer. Then we walked back to our room and took another hour nap. We got up, went for a walk in the night and ate ice cream with coffee. Back to the room for a sleep in that wonderful bed!

    Day 2 Salzburg

    August 31, 2017 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We ate breakfast in the hotel and went looking for a phone store to buy a SIM card. Couldn't find a phone store, but went to the post office where they had some. We weren't sure what to get and the clerks did not speak English, so we gave up. We then walked to the kiosk in Mirabelle Plaza to buy tours. The first tour was for one hour in a mini van that gave us a tour of the city. Informative, but hard to see all from a minivan. We then went on a 45 minute boat ride down the river, Informative and fun!
In the afternoon, we took the Sound of Music tour bus. Lots of fun as we visited the different places scenes from the movie were filmed. We stopped at a grocery and bought cheese, sausage, bread, fruit, wine and beer for our dinner. After dinner we fell asleep for an hour and then woke up to go to the. Hotel Sacher. We sat on the patio overlooking the river and the lit up buildings drinking coffee and eating famous Sacher Torte, a chocolate, cake with whipped cream. Back home and to bed! We were both so tired!

    Day 3 Salzburg to Grundlsee

    August 31, 2017 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We woke up,packed and then went to breakfast. After breakfast we walked to St. Peter's cathedral and rod the cable car up to the fortress. We spent a quick hour there and walked back to our hotel to meet Oli. Oli, Hank, Margaret, Megan, and Lorenz, Jerry and I had melange coffee at the hotel patio. We then walked back to the fortress. The crowds had become large. Hank and Margaret only went to the fortress. The rest of us went into the cemetery grounds that were beautiful. Oli and I went into fortresses with chapels built into the walls of granite! Amazing! We then met up with Hank and Margaret at the Hotel Sacher for lunch and apple strudel. Oli took Jerry and I to the lake and checked us into our apartment. It was raining on the way over to the lake, about an hour and a half. Magen and her parents took the other car and drove to their place. Oli, Jerry and I met up with Wolfgang and Katrina for champagne, beer, dessert and wine. They are driving back to Berlin in the morning so this is the only time we will see them. We went back to our apartment, raining quite heavy, unpacked, and went to bed.Read more

    Day 4 Grundlsee

    September 1, 2017 in Austria ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Our mattress was terrible! It felt like we were sleeping on a hay bale! Oli pocked us up and we went to a bakery to buy bread for breakfast and to buy groceries. It was a gray, cloudy, rainy day. Oli cooked us eggs with our bread and fruit. After breakfast we went for a boat ride across the lake. We got off the boat at the other side of the lake and hiked to a second lake through a beautiful forest. The second lake was also beautiful! We wet another way back to the boat with any charming Austrian chalets. It was raining quite heavy when we got back to the boat and we had to ride on the deck because all of the inside seating was full of people from a tour bus.
We went to our apt. and had sausage and cheese. Jerry took a nap and then we went to a local town where Oli bought a hat and I bought some hand dyed fabric. We went to Oli's and made and ate dinner. Had a wonderful dinner together, walked home and went to bed.

    Day 6 Grundlsee to Vienna

    September 5, 2017 in Czech Republic ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Still lightly raining and cloudy! We ate a wonderful breakfast at the See Hotel and then packed up the two cars and drove the 3 hours to Vienna. Since it was Sunday, all stores were closed and so we had to go to the train station to buy diapers! We also bought our tickets to Prague, only 29 euros each!
Oli took us to our beautiful apartment! We unpacked and then we walked around looking for somewhere to buy laundry detergent. No luck! We went to Oli's and then walked to a French restaurant and had amazing sandwiches! I have a cheesesteak, the best sandwich I've ever eaten! Then we walked to our apartment where I tried to figure out the combo washer/dryer! Got the laundry done but it took until the wee hours of the morning!
