Tuesday 16 June. Bangor to Campbeltown

Our Daughter Hannah is 40 today!!!

Departed Bangor around 1300 to make the best use of the tidal stream in the Irish Sea,and made the run up to Campbeltown in 7 ¼ hours, motor-sailing for part of the way. It was one of those unpleasant seas, where sailing was particularly uncomfortable and a bit of engine just helped us keep up with the wave fronts a bit.

For about 5 out of the 7 ¼ hours we were in fog, visibility much less than 100 metres. We didn’t get a glimpse of the Mull of Kintyre or Sanda Island at all, and we only got to see Davaar Island (on the inlet to Campbeltown Loch) at a range of about 2 cables, and then only a vague outline in the mist. Armed with the trusty chart plotters (3 of them) and a friendly fishing vessel who just happened to be heading in, the entry was easy and comfortable, once off the swell.

Calum, the harbourmaster was very helpful and we stumbled across to the’Black Sheep Bar’ just across the street from the marina gate. Libation was required.
Imagine our surprise when, after exchanging pleasantries, I mentioned in passing that I was retired from the Royal Navy. The barman came straight back and asked if I knew a chap called Steve McLeod. I said I know a Sam McLeod and the barman replied that he was know by that name as well. Next thing, telephone call with Sam and arrangement to meet up. We served together in at least one submarine and at the Special Communications Unit over the years.

Wednesday 17 June, Campbeltown
Sam and Ellen came onboard for coffee and a chinwag for the forenoon. Lovely to see Sam again and meet Ellen who, like Barbara, is a retired health-care professional. Ellen and Barbara had much to chat about, as did Sam and I.

Did a bit of grocery shopping and went for a walk along the south side of the loch in the sunshine. Ended up in the Feathers in the Square, and who should walk in? Sam and Ellen. A smashing evening of catching up, remembering names of old shipmates and spinning dits (and more Guinness.)Read more
