We have been thinking about this for some years and are now getting no younger. At 71 we have just decided to get on with it, so watch this space. For some odd reason Find Penguins has us in 'Woking.' Trying to sort this out as we are at home. Lue lisää

    Wed 27 May, Victoria Dock, Caernarfon

    Leg cramp is not nice!! Suspect it was caused by dehydration, as confirmed by my telephone call with my cancer nurse specialist (routine call) this morning. By the way she also confirmed she is very happy with my progress and has given us clearance to continue.

    Today we dug out our cockpit bimini (Version2 made out of old bed sheets – V1 was a B&Q dust sheet but after 4 years of French sunshine, it died, we buried it.)
    What a difference. It is very hot here and WM’s cockpit was untenable. Bimini up, job done. Out came Wandah (our twin tub washing machine) and laundry conducted in the shade, then hung out in the bright, hot sunshine. We have rigged the bimini over the mizzen sheet, with two halfs. Starboard side down during the forenoon, both at lunch time and once the sun comes around a bit further, starboard side up for the view.

    It will come as no surprise to any of you dear readers, that it is almost a rule that something is forgotten, with a second rule that you only discover said missing item(s) when you are at least 200 miles and Land’s End between you and such items. Thank goodness for internet, Amazon, quick-ish deliveries and a friendly harbour office. Camera battery charger, vacuum cleaner and batteries duly procured with a promise of ‘next-day delivery. Hey ho, if they don’t arrive we will just enjoy Victoria Dock for a few more days.

    Did a bit of shopping this afternoon followed by a couple of sherbets in the Black Boy Inn, followed by the Anglesey, overlooking the Menai Strait.

    An amazing thunderstorm blew in while we were savouring the delights of the second pub. Absolute hooley blowing for a little while, along with torrential rain.
    Got a little wet walking back to Wight Mistress, but had a great night’s kip.    Lue lisää

    Tuesday 26 May Aberdaron to Caernarfon

    Our lovely niece Samantha’s birthday

    Again, a bright, sunny, windless day. This time, in order to arrive at the fairway mark outside Menai Strait, we had foul tide all the way there. Once we arrived exactly on time, the flood tide (HW Caernarfon -3) took us the 5 mile, one hour transit to Victoria Dock to arrive exactly at HW-2, the time advised for the tidal gate access. Met by the lovely Fion (dock master) she took our lines. Our friend Mike is using his computer expertise to find webcam footage and tracking info online and is putting together a superb pictorial diary of this trip. VMT Mike.

    Managed to get ashore to Ainsworths Fish and Chips, reported by locals as the best chippy in these here parts. 45 minute wait from order to deliver, thank goodness there are benches to share with the other expectant diners, and they give you a number so all is fair. Moved from the ‘waiting benches’ to the ‘dining benches’ and made fairly short work of a very pleasant battered haddock and chips. We have discovered that ‘last night’s) chips come back a treat using the air fryer, and we just happened to procure one of those for Wight Mistress during our short sojourn back in Island Harbour (nearly 4 weeks ago) between the abortive east transit and this current west-about voyage.

    Ended up in the ‘Black Boy’ pub, along the castle walls, for a night cap, then back to bed. Nightmare!!! During the night Steve was up with bad leg cramps, ending up sleeping on the saloon seats so Barbara would not awake sleep deprived.    Lue lisää

    Monday 25 May, Fishguard to Aberdaron

    Crossing the whole of Cardigan Bay is about 49 miles and yes, again, we motored all the way across glassy water in bright sunshine. Aberdaron Bay was worth seeing. Beautiful bay and sandy holding although rocky in places. We found a sandy bit but did rig a trip line, just in case, as advised by a contributor to Orca Nav.

    Milford Haven to Fishguard

    24.–25. toukok., Wales ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    No wind, and what ‘apparent’ was what we generated and even if there was a hint……. on the nose. Motored all the way here. On the up side, biright, sunny, warm and a comfortable sea. 7 hrs under way, lovely dinner at anchor and early night. I will post pics, just not tonight.
    Next task is to decide where to go tomorrow. Our aim is Carnarfon and then Holyhead, but keeping legs to sub 50M. Any suggestions for sub 50M from Fishguard gratefully received.    Lue lisää

    Facilities very good, showers particularly so, and the staff very friendly.
    Oh dear, there is a beer festival happening about 500 yards away – perhaps a gentle saunter. Currently we are sat in the cockpit, Barbara writing and painting in her journal of our travels.
    I put ‘Amelia’ (our drone) up and did a few video studies of Milford Haven just for fun.    Lue lisää

    Friday 22 May, Dale Bay to MH Marina.

    1000 Slipped (bit of a late start) and made the 5.5 mile run in to arrive during freeflow. Milford Fish Docks and Marina has a good, large lock with floating pontoons each side (not that we used them, but good for our exit in a couple of days or so.
    The reason for using the marina was that we needed to do some food shopping (well, that was our excuse…..) Tesco’s an easy walk from the marina, probably less than 1000 yards. Food procured and stored, we nipped around the marina to the office to check in. On way back, found a nice bar with friendly people, and didn’t get back to WIGHT MISTRESS about 2030 had apple/pear and cheese and hit the sack.    Lue lisää

    Thur 21 May, Padstow to Milford Haven

    21.–24. toukok., Wales ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    0805 departed Padstow and cleared Doom Bar by 0830. Swell from the west and not enough wind to sail with. Put genoa away and sheeted main/mizzen in tight to counter swell on the beam and hunkered down for a 70.8M passage to Dale Bay midwater pontoon in Milford Haven.

    For about 4 hours, mid channel, we had a pod of common dolphin come to play in our bow wave in the sunshine. Wonderful. Sorry, no photos :-( In the whole crossing we only saw the Spanish galleon under power (encountered in Plymouth some days back - see pic below) rounding Steppen Point on her way into Padstow, and one other small fishing vessel playing with her lobster pots. Pity there was no wind..

    Passage extended due to Castlemartin Ranges being active, so we were about an hour and half late getting in, meaning it was dark. Hey ho! Milford is a very deep haven and it is well-marked. Apparently even Admiral Lord NELSON was known to comment on Milford Haven as a safe place to be.

    2255. Would you believe it? As we approached the low lying midwater pontoon, all of a sudden an easterly 26knot wind gusted in for about half an hour just as we were trying to secure to this dodgy looking pontoon.

    NOTE!! If you use this facility, it isn’t bad BUT there are bolts sticking out around the rubbing strakes, so be careful please. We got away with it, more by luck than judgement.

    A couple of large ‘Highland Parks’ helped with a decent night’s kip after a nearly 15 hour passage. We were tired.    Lue lisää

    Wednesday 20 May (Padstow Day 4.)

    Decided to stay another day and let the F6 winds blow out. A bit nicer tomorrow it seems, and of course HW Padstow (0932) is an hour later, so an extra hour in bed before departing. Should be underway sometime after 0730 as we need to settle up and return our key fob. Recognised wisdom is to always arrive or depart Padstow at 2 hours before HW Padstow. Having seen the Doom Bar getting frothy around LW we can see why.

    Took the ferry over to Rock, on the opposite side of the Camel River. Once upon a time Sharps Brewery was there but it seems the corporations (Molson/Coors, that well known ‘British?’ brewer did what corporations do and shifted the operation up to Burton on Trent where, I understand, the fresh water is excellent for brewing. Still, a bit of a shame as another local business shifts.

    Lovely walk along the Camel River. The sandy beaches are exquisite. The ferry runs up on to the beach in different places when the tide is low, so you have to keep an eye out for it.

    Wed 20 May Still in Padstow

    Lovely day yesterday with Barbara’s cousin Sue and husband Bruce. Ate in Rick Stein’s Fish & Chip Restaurant, nice food and reasonable restaurant prices.

    Steve’s been over-tired due to lack of sleep (slipped and hurt knee a month or so ago and sleep disturbed quite a lot. ) Dosed up with pain killers, he slept 12 hours solid. Missed harbour tidal gate. Tom (Harbour Patrol) just called to ask if we’re ok as he is just about to shut the gate. Another day in paradise, maybe tomorrow…..

    Happy Birthday son in law Tom

    Visited the National Lobster Hatchery and the Padstow Museum today. Both fascinating and well worth a look if you come here. Had a pasty too and did a bit of grocery shopping.
    Now, after an afternoon of hiding from the rain, we are going to venture to the nearest pub and discuss what we are going to do next.

    Sunday 17 May St Ives to Padstow (32.2M)

    Reading up on Padstow, access into the tiny port is from HW+/-2 hours. It ls a more locally controlled access and very much dependant on the weather. As those with a naval background know, in RN terms, ETA stands for Exact Time of Arrival. We had all day to do 32.2 miles and the second half of the day was tidal stream in favour. Showing uncharacteristing wisdom (actually just being sick of being thrown around even at anchor, we decided to make progress while being thrown around instead) we slipped and proceeded well early and did a steady 4 – 5 knot run on a Chesapeake Bay Reef, making our ETA of 1638 precisely…… to be told by the Tom, the harbour patrol chap, that today the tidal gate into Padstow would not open until 1700 and would we like to loiter please. Actually a few minutes later he called us back and asked us if we would still like fuel (Barbara had called ahead to ask) so we nipped in and bunkered 244.6 litres of diesel, after which we entered the harbour and Tom was there to take our lines.

    Padstow is absolutely lovely. It is like a miniature version of Honfleur, one of our favourite haunts, mixed with a flavour of St Vaast la Hougue, with pasties and cider.    Lue lisää

    Saturday 16 May Helford River to St Ives

    We really thought we would do the whole Lizard/Lands End thing over 2 days and, indeed, with our principle of limiting each day to 50 miles or less, it made complete sense to do this. Adding to this, as we rounded the Lizard there was a bit of overfall-ish stuff going on, making the sea a tad lumpy, so we made a decision to tack as planned and make our run up to Newlyn. Once around the Lizard, all things felt quite rosy again, so the senior partner declared her wish to continue.

    Helford River, round Lizard and Lands End to St Ives is 62 miles and took us about 10 1/2 hours..
    Departed the mooring at 0624 and arrived at 1645

    NOTE: despite what any almanac might advise, St Ives as an anchorage is quite uncomfortable when the wind is in the northwest, so little sleep was achieved that night. The good news is that the anchor held fast all night in sand.    Lue lisää

    Thur 14 Plymouth (QAB) to Helford River

    14.–16. toukok., Englanti ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

    0647. Slipped QAB expecting max Force 6 occasionally. Turned out to be F6, gusting F7 and right up to 36kts (into F8!! for a time.) Fortunately a fine reach all the way from Penlee Point, straight line into the Helford River. It was verrrry chilly, with much of the wind in the north. Lots of rain showers and gusty wind but despite the very strong wind, not much rough water. Still knackering though.

    Arrived 1535 (8hrs 48 of which 1 hr36 under power.) Knackered. Steve’s knee and starboard SI joint giving gyp so broofies and Voltarol cream order of the day. Decided to stay 2 nights (£27 a night) on a visitor mooring ball and have a bit of a rest day tomorrow. Wind and tides looking favourable (if you believe the weather guessers) for Saturday round the Lizard and up to somewhere near Newlyn, poised for the Lands End dash on Sunday. Helford River is beautiful. Just had a nice chat with Pete (ex RM) moorings officer, who gave us a briefing on the river and what there is to see. Hoping the weather tomorrow is ok for a dinghy run ashore and a look around.    Lue lisää

    Tuesday 12 May Salcombe to Plymouth

    12.–14. toukok., Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    After a very pleasant and peaceful night on the RNSA buoy we woke at around 0600 and decided to get going. Underway at 0716, out of harbour and sailed for about an hour on a foul tack in falling wind. Motor sailed the rest of the way in almost zero wind, arriving at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina (QAB) in Sutton Harbour at around 1144. Met up with Steve and Steph Rodgers, had lunch with them in ‘Waypoint’ – a pleasant bar-restaurant on the marina before heading ‘up homers’ for the night. Fabulous chat and remembering salty dits and salty seadogs. Great night’s kip chez Rodgers.

    Wed 13 May Plymouth for a second night

    As predicted, F6-7 winds kicked in with showers during the forenoon. Lunch in Waypoint again and made farewells. Lovely visit with the Rodgers’s. Looking at the weather for tomorrow before deciding what to do next. Current plan is to get underway tomorrow around 0700 and head for the Helford River.

    Brixham to Salcombe (not Plymouth, then)

    Monday 11 May, surprisingly enough, we were awake at 0600, slipped at 0704 and were on the RNSA mooring buoy in Salcombe by 1150. We had intended to press on to Plymouth, but the favourable tidal stream that got us around Start Point was about to run against, and guess what? Wind came around on the nose and was building. So other than tacking out to Eddystone and then all the way back, the entrance to Salcombe was yawning at us on a nice easy beam reach for about 2 miles or so. Easy option taken.

    If you want to know where the RNSA mooring buoy is: as you come in round the corner into the main harbour you will see the fuel barge (flags up). Run up leaving the fuel barge to starboard and aim for a large yellow buoy marked with a ‘3’ and the speed limit. The RNSA mooring buoy is just in front of it and it is clearly marked (once you are close) and is a darker red than the other buoys. (useful if in daylight.)
    DO NOT GO MUCH FURTHER OR YOU WILL GO AGROUND! (we did, a couple of years ago and the harbour launch chap remembered us (doohhhh!)

    Portland to Torquay then Brixham

    9.–11. toukok., Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    Saturday 9 May, slipped from the RNSA mooring at 0420 to make the most of the west-bound tidal stream to Torquay. Managed to sail for 6 hours out of the 10 hour passage, which was not bad. It took 8 ¾ hours from Portland Bill to Torquay Marina.

    Came across HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH in the murk as we crossed Lyme Bay

    Pleasant surprise when we went in to pay. It seems that our other visits to MDL marinas over the years had earned us ‘Otium points’ and so that night’s visit was free (a great word for cruising yachties!)

    Met up with an old RN buddy, Steve Morgan and his wife Rachel and we were ‘grippo’d (taken up homers) for BBQ, beer and a good old chinwag. Lovely. Sadly this old fool forgot to take any photos dammitt!

    Back onboard at dark, slept like the dead.

    Sunday 10 May
    1112 decided to slip and proceed across Torbay (3 ½ miles or so) to Brixham to have a look at the replica of Drake’s ‘GOLDEN HIND.
    For those wot don’t know, when the wind is in the east and a-blowin, Torbay closely resembles a scale model of the Bay of Biscay, with the seabed ramping up to shallow water from the English Channel and the waves/swell (wind Force 6) are ‘kin ‘uge and on the beam when crossing in a north-south line. It only took just over an hour motor-sailing, but we were quite pleased to arrive in the protection of Brixham Harbour. While quite nicely protected, there is still a bit of a swell even in the marina and we noted that most boats had snubbers in their mooring lines and others showed evidence of mooring lines having been repaired. Nevertheless, it was a lovely stay. The MDL staff in both Torquay and Brixham were excellent and we did manage to visit the GOLDEN HIND, and of course had crab sarnies and a bit too much ale.     Colwell Bay (IOW) to Portland Harbour

    0425 weighed anchor to make the most of the tidal stream. Glorious sunrise! Got all the way to St Albans Head before slack water. Wind eased and was almost astern, so the engine helped for a couple of hourse. Now on an RNSA mooring enjoying the sun. Aiming for Torquay tomorrow, weather permitting.Lue lisää

    Under way again, Island Harbour to Colwell Bay

    7.–8. toukok., Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    After quite a lot of work fixing the autopilot and generally faffing about, we decided that today was the day we would head off again, with the plan to head east still. Looking at the weather and wind predictions, we turned our plan on its head and at 1600 we departed from Island Harbour, bimbled down the river and picked up the west going tidal stream. Yes folks, we have done a Starmer. We are heading west-about instead. Still, we got to vote which is a good and honourable thing to do.
    Currently at anchor in Colwell Bay and have had a superb meal onboard, cooked by my amazing mate. Early doors tomorrow to catch as much of the westbound tidal stream and we are aiming for Portland.

    The ‘Nip Home’ to Reset

    Plenty of wind, downward run, easy (or was it?).
    Left Brighton at 0700 with a prevented mizzen and full genoa,
    we ploughed on back to Island Harbour.
    Running down wind can be tedious. I think it’s preferable to beating to windward (but then gentlemen do not beat to windward.) We ‘re—discovered’ vs that it’s a balance between the speed the boat can go at and speed the waves are overtaking you. So we added a bit of diesel to the equation just to help push on and keep up with the waves. With the wind building further we eased the genoa back to about half and were still making 6 knots, sometimes 8!!!! Selsey Bill. (the narrow channel between ‘Street’ and ‘Boulder’ buoys resemble a fun fair ride for about half an hour, which was interesting. Coming out of the other side everything settled down again we had a still lumpy ride back to cows.
    We were alongside shut down by. 1600. All a bit salty and tired, we retired to our lovely cottage, consumed a magnificent chilli, cooked by Barbara, then consumed a little wine in front of the TV and went to bed. Bit of a long day. What are we gonna do next? Watch this space…..    Lue lisää

    Our first attempt at Beachy Head

    We had a few pleasant few days at Shoreham and a day watching the Brazilian jujitsu tournament in Brighton. Sadly, our son David was not well and did not compete but we still went and supported his Club, which was fun.
    On Monday 20th we decided to carry on east; we might have been a bit cagey about depth of water so we delayed until around the 11 o’clock lockout to get going. This left us with insufficient time and tide to carry us around Beachy Head, and, low and behold, the wind had come around to the east (as predicted….. dammitt!!.)
    After beating and getting nowhere, my lovely wife suggested we popped back to Brighton for the night and watch what went on. So we turned and had a beautiful run for about 2 hours. Brighton is not the prettiest Marina but the people they are nice. A couple of nights hunkered down and haemorrhaging ££££ (marinas are not cheap in the south) the predictions for the wind all showed the beasterly easterly continuing for a few more days. What to do???
    We went ASDA for some essentials then, armed with our little bag of shopping, we drifted into Wetherspoons to have a beer and think about it. We quickly realised that while it taken us a week and a half to get to where we were, we were still only a day sail from home, and with the wind in the east, what could be easier?    Lue lisää

    Emsworth Midwater Pontoon to Shoreham

    16.–20. huhtik., Englanti ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

    Our last night on Emsworth midwater pontoon was one of strong winds, not quite as strong as those we experienced there during the FSMBC rally in 2023, and no lines parted like last time, BUT Steve was up a couple of times during the night, trying to stop the bow lines squeaking. Eventually some greasy rags had some effect but as Steve didn’t settle down to sleep until nearly 0300, the 0600 early start drifted right a bit. The result was that we caught the last of the flood tide around Selsey Bill and then punched it all the way to Shoreham. This said, we had an absolutely lovely sail, partly broad reach and then a dead run with us running goosewinged for the last hour or two.

    WE SAW DOLPHINS!!!

    A sizeable pod of bottlenose dolphins came to play with Wight Mistress for a full half hour, during which we did get some video – which will be edited to cut out all the empty waves to save you, dear reader, getting board.

    A note to the wise. We arrived at Shoreham at 1630, about one hour before LW Shoreham and about 2 hours before LW Dover (Neaps+5, Springs -3) On calling Shoreham Harbour Radio on Channel 14, he announced only 1.3metres available. A subsequent call revealed that was to do with the small lock (Prince George) and he instructed us to go and wait in the big ship lock next door. We figured we would have to wait for over 3 hours before the water came back up higher than 1.5m but no, the nice man filled the big ship lock for just little ol’ us. We were alongside Lady Bee Marina shut down by 1704. Reeeesult.

    Staying in Shoreham for 4 nights as our son Dave is competing in a Brazilian JuJitsu tournament on Sunday. We will depart with the eastbound tidal stream on Monday, get around Beachy Head and either anchor off, or go into Eastbourne Marina, depending on the weather etc.    Lue lisää

    Itchenor just around to Emsworth Channel

    For the first time since fitting the $h1t tank years ago we exercised the pump out facility. It worked like a dream. At 1006 we slipped from N1 to the ‘touch n go’ berth to avail ourselves of the pump out facility then departed from Itchenor, just down the harbour and up the Emsworth Channel to the mid water pontoon (where we enjoyed the FSMBC Rally in 2023.) Like then, it is blowing a hooley and we have all lines doubled up.

    We are starting to wonder if we can actually afford this. The south coast just sucks the money out of boaters, making the whole experience tougher to handle than we thought. Still, we will persevere. Hopefully once out of the clutches of southern England, things might ease and anchoring and buoy mooring will be easier. In Chichester Harbour you owe them a tenner just for coming through the entrance.

    Soo, I found that I could not get rid of the initial ‘waypoint’ of Woking, so after multiple Googles, in desparation I binned all the track info. Doooh!! not a good move.
    I have got the tracker back on though.
    I promise to BUFFS. We have decided to head off early in the morning and catch the eastbound tidal stream to Shoreham, where we will stay for 4 nights (saving £40 in mooring fees by not going somewhere else for 2 of those nights….)    Lue lisää

    These first few days are all about relaxing into this journey. We have had good sailing so far but today Steve slipped and hurt his already hurting knee. hence sitting and resting and writing up this blog. After a bit of a rest we intend having a walk to check the knee out.Lue lisää

    FSMBC to Itchenor 13 April

    Departed FSMBC at 1046, picking up 100 ltrs of fuel at Gosport Marina and enjoying a discount for RNSA membership, (worth £26 off the bill) - Reeeesult!!
    Another lovely sail to Chichester Harbour where we intend staying a night or two.
    (Next activity is in Brighton on Sunday 19 Apr where we will be watching our elder son Dave compete in a Brazilian JuJitsu competition..    Lue lisää
