  • Lerici (IT)

    31 juillet 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

From the North Sea, to what I have just learnt, is the Ligurian Sea, and an awesome swim.

My base for the next two nights, a campsite in a tierred olive grove overlooking a bay. From the campsite there is a set of stairs over the rocks leading into the ocean. Going to enjoy a few swims in the bay. Tomorrow will be another day of exploring.En savoir plus

  • Cinque Terra (IT)

    1 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera, comprising of five small coastal villages. Made use of a boat tour to visit the villages. These hamlets either cling to the cliff face or are concealed in small inlets. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside.

From the last village it was a scenic train ride back to La Spezia, and from there a bus back to the campsite in Lerici.

  • Lucca (IT)

    3 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Yesterday on the way to Lucca must be the hottest that I have ever cycled in (43 °C).

Today was a day exploring Lucca, famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls.

Also used today to replace my pannier rack on the bicycle which was beyond repair.En savoir plus

  • Pisa (IT)

    5 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

It is believed that the city of Pisa was founded on the shore and was a maritime city, however with sediment deposits it now lies 10km inland from the shore.

Known worldwide for its leaning tower. The tower at its worst was leaning at 5.5 degrees. Work was done to stabilize the lean, and the lean is now stable at 4 degrees. The top of the tower is off-center by 3.9 meters.

Not only does the tower lean, but also the Baptistery which has a lean of 0.6 degrees.

    6 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Back on the bike again today after being spoilt rotten by Morris & Jenny in Lucca. Going to miss the company, good food, cold beers, and most definitely the swimming pool !

Set off fairly earlier and headed towards the heart of Tuscany.  Undulating route today with a few climbs of around 10° that tested the legs. By 2pm the heat really begins to take it's toll.En savoir plus

  • Siena / Buonconvento (IT)

    7 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

The route has been mainly on the tar, but a few more dirt roads today. Siena was amazing, so much going on there !

Another puncture today, but at least I had the luxury of being able to carry out the repair in the shade.En savoir plus

  • Bolsena (IT)

    8 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A day of mixed fortunes. Tyre burst and ripped to shreds in the middle of nowhere. Put on my sad look face and rang a doorbell at a small factory. One of the workers loaded me, my bike and all my bags into his car, and took me to the nearest town.

Dropped me off at a workshop, I guess he knew one of the staff. Was told to wait two minutes and he took off on his scooter. Came back after thirty minutes with a second hand tyre and tube. Back on the road again !!

Camp tonight right on the shore of Lake Bolsena. Evening intertainment watching a plane skimming over the lake scooping water to put out a fire in the hills behind the town.

  • Sutri / Lake Bracciano (IT)

    9 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Unplanned stop at a Roman amphitheater carved into tufa rock that dates back to the end of the 2nd century and could seat up to nine thousand people.

At the same site, also visited a church, Maddona del Parto, dating back to the 13th century, also entirely excavated into the tufa rock. From outside there is nothing that reveals the presence of a church.

Fortunate enough to finish today's cycle at another lake, Lake Bracciano. Campsite again is right on the shore of the lake.

  • Rome (IT)

    10 août 2017, Italie ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

Arrived in Rome yesterday, again using the waterways to navigate into a city, this time making use of the Tiber river (3rd longest river in Italy). Once in the city then over to the GPS for the last few km's. Cycling in a city is not as difficult as it may seem.

The shear number of monuments, the Roman ruins, and the enormity of these is truly impressive. Visited the Colosseum, Catacombs, Piazza Venezia, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Crypt of Capachin Monks, Roman Baths, Panthenon, Trevi Fountain, and many other attractions.

  • Vatican City (VA)

    13 août 2017, Cité du Vatican ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The worlds smallest independent international state, a walled off enclave within Rome, and home to approx 800 people.

Consisting of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Bascilica, and of course St Peter's Square. Michelangelo's artwork adorns the walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and took him five years to complete.

Also climbed the stairs up and into the dome with breathtaking views of Rome from the top.
