My Illinois Route 66 adventure officially kicked off today with a stop for lunch at the iconic Delray chicken basket in Willowbrook and it couldn’t have started on a better or tasty note.
Since the 1940s, the Rhea family has been welcoming travelers along this legendary stretch of road. What started as a bluebird bus stop has grown into one of Route 66 most beloved dining landmarks, and I must visit for anyone chasing Americana.
From here, it’s miles of memories waiting to unfold. Let the mother wrote adventure begin!

Unexpected murals in Bolingbrook

One of my favorite parts of traveling? The art you don’t expect to find!

While starting out on my route 66 adventure, I decided to pull in and grab an iced tea at the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-through in Bolingbrook Illinois. Something caught my eye behind the cocina 53 restaurant just across the lot. There were three color from murals took away like hidden gems, waiting to be discovered.

Each one brought its own personality, vibrant colors, playful, details, and creative energy that made me hit the brakes and walk over for a closer look. They felt like a joyful surprise in a space you’d never think to search for art

It’s a good reminder: keep your eyes open. Beauty is everywhere, especially in the places you almost passed by.

Took a long historic stretch of route 66 is a true American original – Lambert’s gas station, a family owned icon that’s been serving travelers for over 68 years.
Recently recognized by the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Way is the longest continuously operating gas station on route 66 in the entire country, Lambert is the real deal.
Stepping onto the lot feels like stepping into a living piece of the mother road were full service still means something, and stories are as painful as the miles behind you.
Lambert isn’t flashy. It doesn’t need to be. It runs on legacy, hard work, and the kind of authenticity that keeps route 66 alive generation after generation.

This little park is a hidden gem for Route 66 travelers! Nest just off the historic Highway, the Route 66 parking in Joliet celebrates the spirit of America’s most iconic road with signage, murals, and sculptures that captured the nostalgia and freedom of the open road
I took time to walk through the park, take photos, and soak in the history. You’ll find all kinds of artwork, fund roadside, icons, even replicate gas station pumps. It’s the perfect quick stop to stretch your legs and snaps and retro worthy photos.

Right in front of the Route 66 Park in Joliet, I made a sweet pitstop at the Richmond creamy ice cream stand – a nostalgic roadside gem serving up plastic cones with a side of iconic flare
What makes this place extra fun? Two blues Brothers statues perched right on the roof! You can’t miss them. Jake and Elwood are striking. Opposed as if they’re dancing their way down the other road. It makes for the perfect route 66 photo opp

Roadside car at Dick’s towing

One of the most unexpected and totally awesome finds along my route 66 road trip was the bold and colorful car art display at Dick’s towing in Joliet.
It’s part gallery, part auto graveyard, and fully photogenic. I couldn’t help but pull over to snap a few pics. It’s quirky stops like this that make route 66 unforgettable.
