Mount Hakone Volcano

Apocalyptic landscape. Tasty black eggs. Pungent sulphur smell. My first time on an active volcano. It's like an alien world.

Gondolas are everywhere here. We got the gondola up from town, while the black eggs get a ride up and down the volcano between the scalding water they're cooked in and the shop where workers pack them for customers like clockwork.

We got a special tour of a restricted zone closer to the volcano. A Japanese speaking tour guide takes you up close to where the eggs are cooked and between several emergency shelters to explain a bit of the history and geology of the place. Definitely worth the 800 yen.
