  • Singapore Zoo

    25 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We caught the MRT and bus to Singapore Zoo. I discovered that there is an MRT station named Canberra for some reason. Why would they name a station after the most boring place on planet earth?

I visited the zoo once before in 2015, and it hasn't changed much. It's absolutely huge and is probably one of the best zoos in the world. There is such an amazing variety of animals from across the globe here. My favourite was the Komodo dragon, it's an absolute beast of a thing.

I avoided eating here and just brought some drinks and snacks in my backpack, as it's typical for zoos to overcharge for food.

    Overall a great experience.

  • Chinatown & Surrounds

    25 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

We arrived at Chinatown to find dinner. Our group settled on a seafood restaurant/bar after tossing up some options, unfortunately it was a very mediocre and tasteless laksa I had, and on the expensive side too.

Chinatown is a little tacky and tourist trappish for my taste, but there are some genuinely great food spots here and funny things to buy. Afterwards, we walked around and had a few drinks at a trendy bar then went back home.

  • Sentosa Island Luge

    26 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We got the bus to Sentosa Island and had a go at the luge there. It's a lot of fun for a decent price, we went four times and raced one another despite what the lame safety instructions say.

I also snapped a devious pic of my luge experience without their permission because I am so evil and cunning. Look at that handsome face.Leggi altro

  • Gardens by the Bay

    26 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Gardens by the Bay is a magical place. They were doing a nighttime light show with ambient music when we visited.

Instead of doing the treetop walk we went into this huge dome greenhouse. Stepping in, the cool air hits you in all the right spots after being out in the humidity and 30 degree heat all day.

Inside is a rainforest environment with lots of decorations and spectacle. You can even see Marina Bay Sands from inside. It's one of the most futuristic-feeling places I have been to in my life.

We got satay for dinner nearby in a nice market.

  • Universal Studios Singapore

    27 agosto 2024, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The boys and I arrived at Universal on Sentosa after another breakfast at a Hawker market. I hadn't gone on a rollercoaster since I was young and I was quite anxious heading in.

Fortunately five seconds in I realised that rollercoasters are very fun. We had a blast around the park but I was too stingy to buy overpriced food or drinks so I ended up really tired at the end of the day.Leggi altro

  • Hiroshima

    4 settembre 2024, Giappone ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Hiroshima is easy to visit from Iwakuni. We spent an hour on a train into the city on a pleasant sunny day.

First we saw the atomic dome, then headed into the memorial museum. The museum is deeply disturbing and sad. It is dead silent inside (as it should be). People quietly shuffle between exhibits of victims' personal belongings and memoirs of surviving family members.

To shake off the dread we had some okonomiyaki, a regional signature dish. Yukari described it as a Japanese pizza. It wasn't my favourite, but nonetheless a great new experience.

There's some good shopping options in the huge arcade in the middle of the city. We bought some super cheap clothes from GU, then headed back to where we started. I got a great shot of the atomic dome standing as a silhouette against the setting sun on the way out.

  • Miyajima & Mount Misen

    8 settembre 2024, Giappone ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After an easy ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi, we were greeted on this island by lots of deer and lots of other tourists. Getting photos of the torii that thinks it's Jesus is a bit hard when everyone else wants one too.

We got a great lunch of karaage chicken and conger eel from Zipang, a tiny wooden restaurant tucked away in a street behind the main tourist areas.

After that we followed the path up Mount Misen instead of taking the ropeway. It's a great walk but I really do not recommend it in the middle of Japanese summer, we could've swam in our own sweat whenever we sat down to rest, and my shirt had salt on it at the end of the day. Disgusting. Bring plenty of water if you go up by foot.

Breathtaking views at the top, great views of Hiroshima and the Seto Sea. Lots of blue and green to appreciate.

After coming back down the sun had just set and the tide had dropped, allowing everyone to walk out to the torii. The sun gave way to some great colours and I got some good photos from it.

  • Fushimi Inari Shrine

    11 settembre 2024, Giappone ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

If you're going to visit popular spots in Kyoto, it's best at night. Fushimi Inari is serene on a pleasant summer night. There's still a decent number of tourists, but not the suffocating crowd you would find here during daytime.

It's easy to get here as there's a station basically dedicated to the shrine just outside the entrance. Once inside we did a little stroll around until we decided to tackle the mountain. We walked the whole way up through the hundreds or thousands of torii here. There are lots of stray cats and a few small boars chilling out here too.

You can really feel the mix of old and new in Japan here. I was soaking in a panoramic view of city lights from a shrine that's been around for 1300 years.

100% worth the visit, but try to go at night time, sunset or early in the morning. Shrines are best appreciated in a peaceful setting.

  • Mount Hakone Volcano

    13 settembre 2024, Giappone ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Apocalyptic landscape. Tasty black eggs. Pungent sulphur smell. My first time on an active volcano. It's like an alien world.

Gondolas are everywhere here. We got the gondola up from town, while the black eggs get a ride up and down the volcano between the scalding water they're cooked in and the shop where workers pack them for customers like clockwork.

We got a special tour of a restricted zone closer to the volcano. A Japanese speaking tour guide takes you up close to where the eggs are cooked and between several emergency shelters to explain a bit of the history and geology of the place. Definitely worth the 800 yen.

Great experience, recommend for anyone visiting Hakone.
