• Litchfield National Park Day 1 exploring

    5 September 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Our first day to explore the park, and we headed out to the farthest swimming spots, Florence and Buley waterholes. What beautiful spots! I had no idea what to expect so it was a real treat to walk the lovely Shady Creek trail and come upon Florence falls. We had a lovely swim. Well, me and Eva did - Mil was petrified of the big black fish swimming harmlessly through the water so she panicked and didn't want anything to do with being in the water, so Ben sat on the steps into the waterhole with her). We ate a picnic lunch, then the day turned sour. Mil pooed in her swimmers, and Eva tantrummed the whole walk back to the car demanding to be carried. Then somehow at the car our backpack was misplaced, and despite a thorough search later in the day in the carpark and road in it was nowhere to be seen - for now, goodbye first aid kit and epirb.

We pushed on, trying not to be overwhelmed by the big emotions happening in the car, and arrived at the Buley waterhole. At this stage both kids were adamant they didn't want to go to another waterhole, so Ben jumped out and had a quick look, then returned and I tagged in for a look. I took the opportunity for a solo swim, and returned to the car to 3 snoozing family members. Everyone was feeling much better after a nap so we ventured back to Buley falls as a family for a later afternoon swim, which was just what was needed, and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We were all swum out so there was no pool time when we got back to camp, instead the girls raced their bikes with some other young kids in the park with much delight and determination.

We emailed the Rangers on the off chance someone found our bag and handed it in, and planned to call the local police station and cafes in the morning when they re-opened.
