• Kakadu Day 3

    September 16, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Sunday today. We checked out Nourlangie, about a half hour drive south of Jabiri, where a 2km loop takes you last several rock art galleries and a lookout. A very hot day today so we coaxed the kids (and ourselves) out with iceypoles. It's incredible to think how long these illustrations have been there. I must admit my ability to enjoy viewing them and really take it all in was hampered by the temperature and the two hot, sick grumpy children. After making it back to the car, we decided there was no fun to be had taking the kids on any more walks for the moment, so we drove a short way done the road so Ben could do a scenic billabong walk solo while the kids and I waited in the air conditioned car, then we swapped and I did the short, steep Nawurlandja lookout track on my own. Breathtaking panoramic views out over the plains with the vast escarpment in the distance.

We headed back to camp for more pool time to cool off. We'd relented the previous day to the kids requests and postponed Ubirr, and given this was our last night in Jabiru we had to go this afternoon or we'd miss it. So in the late afternoon we set off again to Ubirr, known for its rock art, timed for a picnic dinner at sunset at the lookout. The great thing about not doing a whole heap of research about what you're going to visit is that you get to be blown away by what's in front of you when you see it for the first time. This was definitely one of those times, the quintessential Kakadu scene, made even more spectacular by the sunset backdrop.
