• Kakadu Day 5

We headed out to Jim Jim Falls today for a picnic, walk and swim. The road in from the main highway
is 50km of gravel, then 10km of true 4WD track, which created a fun rollercoaster ride according to the kids. We ate a picnic lunch once we got the carpark/trailhead, then set off to the falls, about 2km. What began as a sandy track turned into sand/rocks, then all rock, then huge boulders. Millie got the royal treatment and was carried all the way in, and Eva persisted until right at the end when some of the boulders were twice her height. What a magical walk in, especially the second half as we walked alongside crystal clear waterpools to our right (no swimming though🐊), and huge towering red cliffs on either side. When we arrived there were a few other groups already swimming, so we assumed they would have already been eaten by crocs if there were any in the waterhole, and jumped on in. So refreshing after the long hot walk! We could see lots of fish swimming about, and by the time we got out we had the whole place to ourselves. There were a few crows about, and we'd heard from others they'd been practicing their Houdini zipper skills and breaking into people's backpacks and stealing food. One managed to find its way into the top of our pack and start in on a tissue packet, but lucky we got out of the water and spoiled his party before he got too far into things.

When we got back to our campsite the kids and I headed to the playground and jumping pillow as promised. At one point Millie pointed and said 'look mum, a doggie!' and standing nearby was a dingo. He wasn't threatening at all toward us, he seemed to know where he could get some scraps as he headed past us to the back door of the cafe kitchen to snoop around.
