    Arrival

    19 września 2022, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

There was NOBODY on the M1, as we were the only people in the country if not the entire universe who were not watching the Queen's funeral on TV. Except for a barrista at Trowell Services.

We stopped at Matlock Baths to eat our sandwiches and then arrived in Winster at 2ish. Yes, THAT Winster, scene of the 1821 fatal duel between Brittlebank and Cuddie.

Our cottage is ancient, with wooden beams and windows at knee level and ultra high-speed WiFi and other bijou features. We have met neighbours and they speak English.

Right, cuppa then exploring the village. And after that 2 minutes, we'll find something else to do.

  • Walking...

    20 września 2022, Anglia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We got up late and went to Ilam Hall for lunch. Picturesque with sandwiches. Then we went to Dovedale, scene of Bikkitdog's adventures whereby he missed a stepping stone and fell in the river. Di had forgotten this, so managed to cross. I have a better memory and bottled it. Di encouraged me to forget so i did and got to the other bank with only a minor emotional meltdown. And then we walked uphill , turned round and walked downhill and crossed the bloody stepping stones with only another minor emotional meltdown. Recovered with a chocolate ice cream. Czytaj więcej

  • Climbing...

    21 września 2022, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today we returned to Matlock Bath, and took the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. The sights and entertainments at the summit could have been tacky, but were surprisingly fresh and interesting. Troglo-DI-te overcame her fear of the dark and ventured into the lead mines, brave girl! And there was a lot on the history of the area (named after the Battle of Quebec, to attract the 18th century tourists)

And then we visited the aquarium in one of the old spa buildings specifically to see the AXOLOTLS because who in their right mind would ever pass up the chance to see AXOLOTLS?

  • Eating...

    22 września 2022, Anglia ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Today we got up late and pootled into Bakewell. Had a quick look around then found a great little restaurant. I had smoked haddock risotto, Di had a guacamole and roasted pepper jam on sourdough with halloumi chips that she adored. And then we shared a huge Bakewell pudding with thick custard.

Having consumed several thousand yum calories, the obvious thing to do was to climb for 20 minutes up a vertiginous path to see Peveril Castle, reputedly the most spectacular in the country. Quite possibly, but as clouds descended we have to take their word for it. It is built above a large cave called Peak Cavern but known to all as the Devil's Arse.

Then Di drove for the first time ever above the rain!

  • Returning...

    23 września 2022, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

And so we left our little cottage and went, via Chesterfield home of the wonky church spire, to Hardwick Hall. Built by the fascinating Bess of Hardwick whose biography is well worth perusing. And she popped her initials all over the house. Superb tapestries, furniture and paintings. Good gardens, with a Victorian stumpery. Using tree stumps.
And then after a huge chocolate biscuit and a luxury hot chocolate with cream, we came home.

    Nice trip!
