First outside trip was planned for Cape Horn, which was reached early Monday morning. The wind was quite gusty (65 Kn, Beaufort >12) and we were told that the tide was too high, so landing would cause a lot of problems and the safety requirements could not be met, therefore, the trip was cancelled. A huge disappointment, because we all wanted to go the most southern tip on our planet. ....but the wind was really strong out there, it was almost impossible to hold the mobile, nor the flag as you might see on the pictures. After staying for some time at this place, a smell of coffee and fresh bread crept through the ship, so it was decided to go for breakfast.
Am Montag morgen wurde dann Kap Horn erreicht, allerdings waren die Wetterbedingungen derart, dass der Wind zu stark (65 kn, Windstärke >12, orkanartig) und die Brandung zu stark waren, um ein Landen mit den Zodiacs auf der Insel sicher zu gewährleisten. Die Enttäuchung war bei vielen natürlich sehr groß, dann auf dem südlichsten Zipfel unseres Planeten zu stehen, war für viele eines der highlights. Der Wind war so stark, dass man das Handy kaum halten konnte, um gute Bilder zu machen. Die Bilder geben dieses nur ansatzweise wider. Als dann Kaffee- und frischer Brotduft aus dem Schiffsinneren kam, entschieden sich dann doch viele für das leibliche Wohl.もっと詳しく

In the afternoon of our first full day on Ventus Australis we had the first outside trip with the Zodiak boats. The Wulaia Bay on Navarino island is full of history, since it was the place of the biggest Yaghan tribe in this area, described by Charles Darwin and drawn by Robert Fitzroy during their trip with the HMS Beagle 1833 (therefore now Beagle channel). Australis runs this place and is securing the history/nature of this area. In the old Chilian radio station a very nice museum is placed, besides a post barrel, in which postcards are thrown, hoping somebody is taking them home to be sent.
Am Nachmittag hatten wir dann den ersten Einsatz in den Zodiaks, es ging in die historisch wichtige Wulaia Bucht, die 1833 von Darwin und Fitzroy auf ihrer Fahrt mit der HMS Beagle (deswegen auch der Name Beagle Kanal) beforscht wurde. Dieser gesamte Ort wird mit Genehmigung von Australis geführt, die damit ihrem zweiten Ziel, Teile von Patagonien zu schützen, nahe kommen. Interessant ist auch ein Postfass, in die man Karten reinwirft mit der Hoffnung, dass jemand diese unfrankierten Karten nimmt und in dem jeweiligen Heimatland verschickt. Angeblich alte Seemannstradition. Das Gebäude, eine ehemalige chilenische Radiostation, ist gleichzeitig auch ein sehr schönes Museum, dass über die Geschichte dieses Ortes und Patagoniens berichtet.もっと詳しく

The morning attraction of the second full day was the Pia Glacier. Again, we were set out in the zodiacs and went to the base of this splendid glacier. First: the ice of the glaciers seems to be blue (a matter of physics). It was a really cool trip, the pictures might show. ...and it was cold. Whenever a piece of the ice was broken off, a loud bang could be heard. After disembarkment, we walked slightly uphill to see the glacier from above.
Die Attraktion am Morgen des zweiten vollen Tages war eine Zodiac-Fahrt zum Pia Gletscher, das Eis dieser Gletscher scheint wirklich blau zu sein (ist allerdings lediglich ein physikalisches Phänomen). Jedesmal wenn ein Stück abricht, gab es einen sehr lauten Knall in der Schlucht. Nach dem Ausstieg ging es dann ein kleines Stückchen hoch, so dass man den Gletscher auch von oben sehen konnte.もっと詳しく

In the afternoon of the second day we were driven to the Porter Glacier, we reached almost the foot of the glacier, which looked soooo blue, amazing view. I call it my 50 shades of blue. We took a lot of pictures in these cold weathers, we should have taken audios, permanently one could hear the ice cracking. We really had to dress up properly, ...the drivers of the zodiacs really pushed the power-down button.
Der Nachmittag des zweiten Tages war durch eine Fahrt mit dem Zodiac zum Porter-Gletscher geblockt. Das Blau des Gletschers war absolut erstaunlich, unglaublich viele Blautöne. Wie man sich vorstellen kann, viele tolle Bilder sind hier entstanden, man hätte auch Audios aufnehmen können, ständig knackte das Eis. Auch das Anziehen aller Jacken, Hosen, Schals und Mützen hat sich gelohnt, es war kalt. ....und die Fahrer der Zodiacs gaben durchaus Gasもっと詳しく

To reach the Aguila Glacier the Beagle channel was left for open sea to enter the Agostini National Park with the Aguila glacier. Again, the place could only reached by zodiacs and a 30 min walk. After this, a wonderful bay opened up and we could see the glacier posing ahead of us. We were told the story of Gunther Plüschow, who was the first to take pictures of some of the glaciers in Patagonia from air. He later was a cofounder of Lufthansa.
Am dritten Tag stand die Besichtigung des Aguila Gletschers im Agostini Nationalpark auf dem Programm. Die Stelle konnte wiederum nur mit den Zodiacs und einem kurzen Spaziergang von ~30min erreicht werden. Es öffnete sich danach der Blick auf eine Bucht mit dem Gletscher. Gabor hat dabei die Geschichte von Gunter Plüschow erzählt, der als erster die Gletscher Patagoniens von der Luft aus fotographiert hat. Er ist einer der Mitbegründer der Lufthansa, dieses erklärt die Verbundenheit der Lufthansa mit dem Namen Kondor. Beste Stimmung bei bestem Wetter.もっと詳しく

In the afternoon of the third full day a the Ventus Australis we were again asked to board the zodiacs to be driven to the Condor glacier. Today our guide was Manolo, he told us a few more insights of glaciers and their behaviour and indeed, we could live see a huge block of ice breaking of the glacier. This entire trip was again very impressive as we could go quite close to the glacier, but safety was put in first. Kondore haben wir leider keine gesehen, denn sie besitzen hier zahlreiche Brutstätten und geben den Namen des Gletschers.
Am Nachmittag des dritten vollen Tages an Bord der Ventus Australis wurden wir wieder in die Zodiacs gebeten, es ging zum Kondor-Gletscher. Diese Vögel und ihre zahlreichen Brutstätten hier geben dem Gletscher seinen Namen. Unser Führer Manolo gab viele Hinweise auf Gletscher und wir konnten tatsächlich eine Gletscher 'kalben' sehen, ein riesiges Stück Eis fiel ab. Absolut spektakulär.もっと詳しく

The last day of our cruise started with a trip to Isla Martha, which is a small island with a huge colony of sea lions and cormorans. We came very close to the animals playing in the water, so impressive.

Der ursprüngliche Plan zur Isla Margherita mit seinen Pinguinen zu fahren, musste aufgegeben werden, da die Pinguine schon alle Richtung Norden in wärmere Gegenden aufgebrochen waren. This town in Chile is burdened with history. 500 years ago the passing of Magellan, places where Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton stayed, prayed and left their footprints, besides so many others. Otherwise, a quite calm city, which can also be due to the fall/early winter weather. We found a nice 'market hall', where excellent local food is prepared.
Punta Arenas am südlichen Ende von Chile ist ein sehr geschichtsbeladener Ort, vor 500 Jahren (1520) durchfuhr Magellan diese Passage, die heute, sowie die gesamte Provinz nach ihm benannt ist. Man sieht auch die Orte, an denen die berühmten Polarforscher Amundsen, Scott und Shackleton übernachtet und sich aufgehalten haben, neben vielen anderen bedeutenden Welteroberern. Wir haben einen netten Ort gefunden, wo einem tolle Sachen zum Essen angeboten werden, natürlich hauptsächlich Fisch.もっと詳しく

Torres Del Paine National Park

For Saturday we booked a trip to Torres del Paine National Park (towers of the blue skies), which started very early in the morning. After passing Puerto Natales, the national park welcomed us with beautiful weather, which are the more rare conditions, especially at this time of the year. We had beautiful photo shooting stops, saw family Kunz-Übermuth at the catarates and, therefore, had a most splendid day at this national park. We only saw outskirts of the Grey glacier, but even this was enormous.
Für den heutigen Tag hatten wir einen Tour in den Torres del Paine Nationalpark (Türme des blauen Himmels) gebucht. Die Fahrt ging sehr früh los, nach ~3 h konnte Puerto Natales erreicht werden und nach weiteren ~2 h waren wir dann im Nationalpark angekommen, bei schönstem Wetter. Gerade dieser Umstand ist nicht immer anzutreffen, noch seltener zu diesem Zeitpunkt im Jahr. Wir konnten sehr schöne Photostops machen, haben die markanten drei Granittürme ohne Wolkenüberhänge gesehen und auch alle weiteren Berge. Bei den Catarates haben wir auch noch die Familie Kunz-Übermuth (https://journi-alternate.app.link/dmWn3tB01yb) wiedergetroffen, die wir bereits auf dem Schiff kennengelernt hatten. Vom berühmten Grey Gletscher haben wir nur die Ausläufer gesehen, aber die waren schon gewaltig.もっと詳しく

Today we will have our last day in Punta Arenas and Patagonia. Most enjoyable trip in the last 10 days, lots of impressions, pictures, people and much more. We walked the city again, moved against the wind and took last pictures, also from the cemetery, again very impressive. Tonight we will try to have diner in the Savoy. The Savoy was fully booked, so we decided to go for Jekus (pubrest), which we enjoyed a lot.
Heute ist unser letzter Tag in Punta Arenas und Patagonien. Die letzten zehn Tage waren gepackt mit Eindrücken, tollen Bildern, interessanten Menschen und vieles mehr. Bei den heutigen Spaziergängen in der Stadt, wieder gegen starken Wind ankämpfend, waren wir auch auf dem Friedhof. Wieder ein sehr imposantes Bauwerk. Heute abend versuchen wir im Savoy essen zu gehen. Daraus wurde nichts, komplett ausgebucht, daher haben wir uns für das Jekus entscheiden, was sich dann letztendlich doch als Topalternative herausstellte.もっと詳しく

At the end of our trip, we have two full days in Buenos Aires, the first was to explore the city mostly by walking. We went to the cathedral, the church of the Argentinian pope, the places of political power, the well-known obelisk and in the afternoon, we got a private tour by Cecilia, which ended in one of the oldest cafe-houses in this city, the Café Tortoni. It can easily compete with the café houses in Vienna.
Das Ende unserer Reise war so geplant, dass wir noch zwei volle Tage in Buenos Aires haben. Den ersten Tag haben wir damit verbracht, die Stadt weitgehenst zu Fuss zu erkunden, Wir waren in der von aussen relative unscheinbaren Kathedrale, der Heimat des jetzigen Papstes, wir haben die Zentren der politischen Macht gesehen, und natürlich den Obelisken. Am Nachmittag haben wir dann eine private Tour von Cecilia bekommen, der dann in einem der ältesten Kaffeehäuser endete, dem Café Tortoni. ...kann es spielend mit jedem Kaffeehaus in Wien aufnehmen.もっと詳しく

Last full day of sightseeing in beautiful Buenos Aires, last full day in Argentina, last full day in South America. Today we went to Boca, which is one of the oldest departments in Buenos Aires. Very colorful, very interesting, Maradona, who played for the Boca Juniors, besides the Pope everywhere and even ahead of Messi. Great time here, again with beautiful weather.
Heute war der letzte volle Tag in Buenos Aires, letzter voller Tag in Argentinien und auch letzter voller Tag in Südamerika. Diesen Tag haben wir in Boca, einem der ältesten Stadtteile in Buenos Aires verbracht. Sehr farbenfroh, super interessant, über allem schweben Maradona, der für die Boca Juniors gespielt hat, und der argentinische Papst, sogar noch vor Messi. The evening before our return we had a farewell dinner with our friends, Cecilia, Nacho and Javier. The pizzas were very Argentinian style, with a lot of cheese and very tastfully. A last selfie in front of the obelisk finished this wonderful evening and the next day we set for long flight (>13h) in a fully booked 747. Its actually the longest non-stop flight Lufthansa offers. Arrival on the next day was greeted by a strike of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, luckily, we could board our planned train and arrived back in Halle late afternoon.
Am Abend vor unserer Rückreise hatten wir ein Abschiedsessen mit Cecilia, Nacho und Javier. Sie hatten vorgeschlagen, ein weiteres highlight, nämlich argentinische Pizza zu essen, sie besticht durch sehr viel Käse. Wir hatten einen wunderbaren Abend, der mit einem Selfie vor dem Obelisken beendet wurde. Am nächsten Tag ging es dann mit einer voll ausgebuchten 747 zurück nach Frankfurt, übrigens der längste Direktflug, den die Lufthansa anbietet. Trotz Streiks der Bundesbahn konnten wir unseren geplanten Zug nach Halle nehmen, und kamen dort am späten Nachmittag an.もっと詳しく

Now back in Halle, time for a little resume: the last six weeks I was allowed to have a very memorable trip, got me into Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. As Jeff, our partner on the cruise said so many times, we are very lucky people to do these kind of trips and explore the beautiful areas of our earth.
Nach 42 Tagen zurück in Halle bleibt festzustellen, dass diese Wochen sehr ereignisreich waren, viele Eindrücke und Bilder bei mir festgesetzt haben und die Personen, die diese Tage so unvergesslich gemacht haben.もっと詳しく
