• Atlantic Rail Trip

    20 april, Zuid-Afrika ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The last ten years have seen an exceptional decline in the rail infrastructure in SA. This company was established by 3 brothers who identified the need to afford locals and holidaymakers the opportunity to experience a nostalgic train journey of a bygone era. On their organised trips the carriages are sometimes pulled by a steam locomotive but on the day of our travel a diesel locomotive was employed.
Saskia and I embarked upon our trip at Hartenbos, on the coast, and travelled through some beautiful scenery to Albertinia, a distance of just under 60kms. Unfortunately, we had not booked our tickets in time to be able to travel in the dining carriage so had to travel "cattle class" 🤣
We were lucky to spot some elephants as we passed the Garden Route Game Reserve, as well as wildebeest and buck.
After a short stop at Albertinia to stretch our legs it was back on the train to Gourits River where we were met by staff from Bon Private Game Reserve who ferried us to their venue for a spot of lunch and live music.
We turned down the opportunity to purchase a game drive as we have both been spoilt by fabulous visits to Kruger Park and the fun of spotting animals in the wild. An organised trip to see the animals grazing at "set" spots just didn't appeal.
After our allotted time there it was time to return to the train and our journey back to Hartenbos.
