Dia 1 a Lago de Atitlán

One of the high points of our entire trip so far was undoubtedly a three day trek from Xela to Lake Atitlán. Several agencies pair prospective hikers with guides, and we agonized for a long time before choosing. In the end, we went with José from Quetzal Tours, who emphasized keeping money local and empowering local guides with fair working conditions. Anyway, our hike began on the outskirts of Xela, and followed a route that led us through lush forests, an intensely-farmed agricultural highland plateau, and finally to the beautiful home village of our guide, Frederico (Chuisibel). There, we were honoured to stay for one night with his family and get to know some of the kids from the village. We learned about Maya traditions and the Quiché language, as well as how to make tortillas (sort of ...). We were absolutely exhausted after all of the action, but thankful to have been able to get to know so many lovely and generous people.

Einer der Höhepunkte unserer gesamten bisherigen Reise war zweifellos eine dreitägige Wanderung von Xela zum Atitlán-See. Mehrere Agenturen vermitteln Wandernde an Führer, und wir hatten lange Zeit die Qual der Wahl. Am Ende entschieden wir uns für José von Quetzal Tours, der Wert darauf legt, dass das Geld vor Ort bleibt und die einheimischen Guides faire Arbeitsbedingungen haben. Jedenfalls begann unsere Wanderung am Stadtrand von Xela und führte uns durch üppige Wälder, eine landwirtschaftlich intensiv genutzte Hochebene und schließlich in das wunderschöne Heimatdorf unseres Führers Frederico (Chuisibel). Dort hatten wir die Ehre, eine Nacht bei seiner Familie zu verbringen und einige der Kinder des Dorfes kennenzulernen. Wir lernten etwas über die Maya-Traditionen und die Quiché-Sprache, und wir lernten, wie man Tortillas macht (sozusagen ...).
