Volcan Acatenango/ de Fuego 🔥

Guatemala is a hikers' paradise, and before our last stop in Antigua, we joined a tour heading up the volcano Acatenango. On the first day, we hiked up from the valley to our base camp. There, we had our first glimpse of the aptly-named Volcan Fuego (Fire). Every few minutes, it would rumble and spew out a cloud of ash and magma. Spectacular to watch (from a very safe distance). Towards evening, we hiked up to a closer viewpoint where we could see things getting red hot. The next morning, we awoke at 4 and hiked to the summit to watch the sunrise. It was cold, windy, and absolutely unforgettable. None of this would have been possible without our excellent guides, Adán and Cesar.

Guatemala ist ein Paradies für Wanderer, und vor unserem letzten Halt in Antigua schlossen wir uns einer Tour auf den Vulkan Acatenango an. Am ersten Tag wanderten wir vom Tal hinauf zu unserem Basislager. Dort warfen wir einen ersten Blick auf den treffend benannten Volcan Fuego (Feuer). Alle paar Minuten rumpelte er und spuckte eine Wolke aus Asche und Magma aus. Ein spektakulärer Anblick (aus sehr sicherer Entfernung). Gegen Abend wanderten wir zu einem näheren Aussichtspunkt, von dem aus wir sehen konnten, wie es rot glühte. Am nächsten Morgen wachten wir um 4 Uhr auf und wanderten zum Gipfel, um den Sonnenaufgang zu beobachten. Es war kalt, windig und absolut unvergesslich.
