    After a lovely time in Oaxaca, we spent three days hiking through pueblos mancomunados (indigenous-run village collectives) to the north of the city. The first day took us from Cuajimoloyas to Latuvi, accompanied by local guides Yolanda and Uriel. It was an exhausting climb up and down through the forest but we were rewarded by a beautiful cabin with a million-dollar view.

    Nach einer schönen Zeit in Oaxaca verbrachten wir drei Tage mit Wanderungen durch Pueblos Mancomunados (von Indigenen geführte Dorfgemeinschaften) im Norden der Stadt. Der erste Tag führte uns von Cuajimoloyas nach Latuvi, begleitet von den örtlichen Führern Yolanda und Uriel. Es war ein anstrengender Auf- und Abstieg durch den Wald, aber wir wurden mit einer wunderschönen Hütte mit einem Millionen-Dollar-Blick belohnt.    Lue lisää

    The second half our hike took us through two more beautiful villages in the mountains. On the way, we hiked though some fairytale woods, full of beautiful moss, bromeliads and other crazy plant life. However, the high point of this part was our guide, Cazilda. She was an incredibly spry local lady who told us all about life in the villages, animals and medicinal plants.

    Die zweite Hälfte unserer Wanderung führte uns durch zwei weitere schöne Dörfer in den Bergen. Unterwegs wanderten wir durch märchenhafte Wälder voller wunderschönem Moos, Bromelien und anderen verrückten Pflanzen. Der Höhepunkt dieses Abschnitts war jedoch unsere Guide Cazilda. Sie war eine unglaublich rüstige einheimische Dame, die uns alles über das Leben in den Dörfern, die Tiere und die Heilpflanzen erzählte.    Lue lisää

    San José de Pacífico

    On the way down to the Oaxacan coast, we stopped in a sleepy mountain village called San Jose del Pacifico. In the past few years, it has become somewhat of a hippie hotspot, evidenced by mushroom-themed art throughout the down (building on traditional use by indigenous groups in the region). However, San José also offered breathtaking views all the way to the ocean and great hiking in the hills. Every day, clouds would roll in from the coast and give the whole place a cool, mysterious vibe very different from the valley of Oaxaca.

    Auf dem Weg zur Küste Oaxacas hielten wir in einem verschlafenen Bergdorf namens San Jose del Pacifico. In den letzten Jahren hat es sich zu einem Hippie-Hotspot entwickelt, was sich in der Pilzkunst im ganzen Ort widerspiegelt (die auf der traditionellen Nutzung durch indigene Gruppen in der Region beruht). San José bietet aber auch atemberaubende Ausblicke bis zum Meer und tolle Wandermöglichkeiten in den Hügeln. Jeden Tag zogen Wolken von der Küste heran und verliehen dem ganzen Ort eine kühle, geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre, die sich deutlich vom Tal Oaxacas unterschied.    Lue lisää

    Out of the mountains and off to the beach! It had been a while since we'd seen the Pacific, so we decided to spend a few days at the shore relaxing. Waves were too big (for us) to surf, but we enjoyed the sun and water, and went out on a local fisherman's boat to watch for whales and dolphins. Another high point was simply enjoying the view from hammocks in our hostel and getting to know new wildlife.

    Raus aus den Bergen und ab an den Strand! Es war schon eine Weile her, dass wir den Pazifik gesehen hatten, also beschlossen wir, ein paar Tage an der Küste zu verbringen und zu entspannen. Die Wellen waren (für uns) zu groß, um zu surfen, aber wir genossen die Sonne und das Wasser und fuhren mit dem Boot eines örtlichen Fischers hinaus, um Wale und Delfine zu beobachten. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt war, die Aussicht von den Hängematten in unserer Herberge aus zu genießen und neue Tiere kennenzulernen.    Lue lisää

    Tulum

    From sea to sea... Good friends of ours from Berlin were spending their vacation in Mexico this year, so we hopped up to the Yucatan peninsula to spend some time with them. The town of Tulum was a little bizarre (definite tourist saturation... And yes, we are part of the problem), but the beaches were gorgeous and it was neat to check out some cenotes. However, the highlest was absolutely getting to see our friends Domi and Geli and their daughter!

    Von Meer zu Meer... Gute Freunde von uns aus Berlin wollten dieses Jahr ihren Urlaub in Mexiko verbringen, also sind wir auf die Halbinsel Yucatan geflogen, um ein bisschen Zeit mit ihnen zu verbringen. Die Stadt Tulum war ein wenig bizarr (definitiv touristisch überlaufen... und ja, wir sind Teil des Problems), aber die Strände waren wunderschön und es war toll, ein paar Cenoten zu besichtigen. Das Schönste war jedoch, unsere Freunde Domi, Geli und ihre Tochter zu sehen!    Lue lisää

    Our final stop on the coast of Quintana Roo with our friends was Mahahual, another lovely beach spot that gets obliterated by cruise ship tourists every day. What a strange place... After 5pm, another world. Anyway, we spent time snorkeling with our friends and whizzing up and down the mangrove coast with a tandem bike. Go for the surf and sun, stay for the clash of cultures.😜

    Unser letzter Halt an der Küste von Quintana Roo, mit unseren Freunden, war Mahahual, ein weiterer schöner Strandort, der jeden Tag von Kreuzfahrttouristen überrannt wird. Was für ein seltsamer Ort... Nach 17 Uhr, eine andere Welt. Jedenfalls verbrachten wir die Zeit damit, mit unseren Freunden zu schnorcheln und mit einem Tandem die Mangroven-Küste rauf und runter zu fahren. Kommen Sie für Surfen und Sonne, bleiben Sie wegen des kulturellen Austauschs.😜    Lue lisää

    Mérida

    After a lot of lovely days with our friends on the coast, we hopped on the bus to spend some time in the cultural and transport hub of Merida. Though we didn't do much in the city per se, we enjoyed the funky colourful old town and also used it as a jumping off point for another cenote. We also went to a carneval.

    Nach vielen schönen Tagen mit unseren Freunden an der Küste setzten wir uns in den Bus, um einige Zeit in der Kultur- und Verkehrsmetropole Merida zu verbringen. Obwohl wir in der Stadt an sich nicht viel unternahmen, genossen wir die farbenfrohe Altstadt und nutzten sie als Ausgangspunkt für eine weitere Cenote.     We decided to spend a few days after Merida going (slightly) off the beaten track to Campeche. It was really refreshing to be in a place not completely dominated by other tourists. What can we say? It's a quiet and pretty place with a great market.

    Wir beschlossen, nach Merida ein paar Tage abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade in Campeche zu verbringen. Es war wirklich erfrischend, an einem Ort zu sein, der nicht völlig von anderen Touristen beherrscht wird. Was sollen wir sagen? Es ist ein ruhiger und schöner Ort mit einem tollen Markt.     Campeche was also a jumping-off point for the beautiful Mayan ruins complex of Edzna. It was out first experience of wandering through pyramids half swallowed-up by the jungle and we loved it.

    Campeche war auch ein Ausgangspunkt für den wunderschönen Maya-Ruinen-Komplex von Edzna. Es war unsere erste Erfahrung, durch Pyramiden zu wandern, die halb vom Dschungel verschluckt sind, und wir fanden es toll.    Lue lisää

    Isla Aguada

    Our farewell to the Caribbean coast was tiny Isla Aguada, a fishing town that my perhaps have seen better days (hurricane and/or economic recession?), but that we still enjoyed. Heck, I think we were the only visitors there (and as such, had a private beach)!

    Unser Abschied von der Karibikküste war die winzige Isla Aguada, ein Fischerdorf, das vielleicht schon bessere Tage gesehen hat (Hurrikan und/oder wirtschaftliche Rezession?), das uns aber trotzdem gefallen hat.     Palenque

    Palenque was our introduction to Chiapas, and we were immediately entranced by this town in the steamy jungle. Of course, we visited the eponymous ruins, but also got to explore the hilly, green countryside and see exotic plants and animals like scarlet macaws. Contrary to our travel guide's warnings, it was also a busy spot, where migrants and travelers converged every day in the main square. We would have loved to stay longer to find out what makes this town tick.

    Palenque war unsere Einführung in Chiapas, und wir waren sofort von dieser Stadt im dampfenden Dschungel begeistert. Natürlich besuchten wir die gleichnamigen Ruinen, erkundeten aber auch die hügelige, grüne Landschaft und sahen exotische Pflanzen und Tiere wie Scharlacharas. Entgegen den Warnungen unseres Reiseführers war es auch ein belebter Ort, an dem sich jeden Tag Migranten und Reisende auf dem Hauptplatz versammelten. Wir wären gern länger geblieben, um herauszufinden, was diese Stadt so interessant macht.    Lue lisää

    On the search for indigenous-run businesses, we came across this hotel and bird conservation area and knew that we wanted to visit. It was a long trip along the border with Guatemala, but we spent 3-4 days there, participating in a hiking tour of the Montea Azules Bioreserve and zooming up the river on an early-morning bird- and wildlife watching boat trip. Some of the funniest sightings were completely serendipitous, including spider and howler monkeys hanging around the hotel, and discovering a possum in the kitchen.

    Auf der Suche nach indigenen Betrieben stießen wir auf dieses Hotel und Vogelschutzgebiet und wussten, dass wir es besuchen wollten. Es war eine lange Reise entlang der Grenze zu Guatemala, aber wir verbrachten drei bis vier Tage dort, nahmen an einer Wanderung durch das Bioreservat Montes Azules teil und fuhren frühmorgens mit einem Boot den Fluss hinauf, um Vögel und andere Tiere zu beobachten. Einige der lustigsten Begegnungen waren rein zufällig: Spinnen- und Brüllaffen hingen im Hotel herum, und in der Küche entdeckten wir ein Opossum.    Lue lisää

    Comitán

    Comitán was only supposed to be a short stop on our way out of the jungle, but both of us got a bit sick and we ended up staying longer than planned. However, we still got to discover a few surprises, including the a traditional Mexican folk-ballet, a wheelchair basketball championship and the El Chiflón waterfalls. An unexpected but fascinating visit!

    Comitán sollte eigentlich nur ein kurzer Zwischenstopp auf unserem Weg aus dem Dschungel sein, aber uns beiden wurde ein wenig übel, und wir blieben länger als geplant. Dennoch konnten wir einige Überraschungen erleben, darunter ein traditionelles mexikanisches Folklore-Ballett, eine Rollstuhlbasketball-Meisterschaft und die Wasserfälle von El Chiflón. Ein unerwarteter, aber faszinierender Besuch!    Lue lisää

    San Cristóbal de las casas

    San Cristóbal de las Casas was our base for almost two weeks, as we recovered and got to know the Chiapas highlands. It's a pretty town with a lovely market and pedestrian zone, as well as thriving social movements (I.e. the Zapatistas). We really enjoyed learning more about Indigenous groups in the area and their political history. We also enjoyed good music and a few small hiking adventures. Would gladly return to San Cristóbal any time!

    San Cristóbal de las Casas war für fast zwei Wochen unsere Basis, um uns zu erholen und das Hochland von Chiapas kennenzulernen. Es ist eine hübsche Stadt mit einem schönen Markt und einer Fußgängerzone sowie blühenden sozialen Bewegungen (z. B. den Zapatisten). Es hat uns sehr gefallen, mehr über die indigenen Gruppen in der Region und ihre politische Geschichte zu erfahren. Wir genossen auch gute Musik und ein paar kleine Wanderungen. Wir würden jederzeit wieder nach San Cristóbal kommen!    Lue lisää

    Na Bolom

    Kleines Museum, großes Haus. Im Casa Na Bolom konnten wir ein bisschen über die Geschichte von Gertrude Doby-Blom und Franz Blom erfahren. Sie hat als sich Anthropologin, Fotografin und Sozialaktivistin v.a. für den Schutz des Regenwaldes und seiner Bewohner*Innen interessiert und eingesetzt. Er hat verschiedene Maya Ruinen erkundet. Ihr altes Haus ist heute Museum, Hotel, Baumschule und Sitz der gemeinnützigen Stiftung, die aus ihrem Erbe hervorging.

    Small museum, big house. In Casa Na Bolom we could learn a bit about the history of Gertrude Doby-Blom and Franz Blom. She was an anthropologist, photographer and social activist who was interested in the protection of the rainforest and its inhabitants. He has explored various Mayan ruins. Her old house is now a museum, hotel, tree nursery and headquarters of the non-profit foundation that grew out of her legacy.    Lue lisää

    San Juan de Chamula

    Kleiner Ausflug nach Chamula, um uns dort v.a. die Kirche anzuschauen. In der Kirche darf man keine Fotos machen, dafür haben wir uns einen Guide gegönnt, der uns etwas die Riten und Eigenheiten der Kirche erklärt hat. So vermischen sich hier christliche und tzotzil Einflüsse. Beispielsweise werden gesundheitliche Probleme mit viel Kerzen und Schnaps weggebetet und auf ein Ei übertragen. Bei größeren Problemen kommt sogar ein Hahn als Opfertier zum Einsatz. Außerdem ist der ganzen Boden mit Kiefernnadeln ausgelegt, da große Bäume generell gute Geister mit sich bringen und verehrt werden. Diese Kombination mit zig brennenden Kerzen und Pox (Schnaps) der immer wieder in die Flammen gegossen wird, lässt einen etwas verwundert zurück, doch anscheinend ist bis jetzt nichts passiert.

    Small excursion to Chamula, to look at the church there. In the church you are not allowed to take photos, but we treated ourselves to a guide who explained us something about the rites and peculiarities of the church. Thus, Christian and tzotzil influences are mixed here. For example, health problems are prayed away with lots of candles and liquor and transferred to an egg. For bigger problems, even a rooster is used as a sacrificial animal. In addition, the whole floor is covered with pine needles, as large trees generally bring good spirits and are revered. This combination with umpteen burning candles and Pox (liquor) that is poured into the flames again and again leaves one a bit puzzled, but apparently nothing has happened so far.    Lue lisää

    Isla Boca de Cielo

    Da wir nach Oaxaca zurückreisen mussten, um unser retourniertes Paket aus Deutschland nochmals zu versenden, entschieden wir uns für einen Zwischenstopp am Meer.
    Boca de Cielo bzw. die vorgelagerte Insel erwies sich als der perfekte Ort um ein paar Tage am Pazifik zu entspannen und die Seele baumeln zu lassen. Außer einer kleinen Bootstour zur Laguna de Joya haben wir v.a. das warme Wasser, gutes Essen, lange Strandspaziergänge und das entspannte Inselleben genossen.

    Since we had to travel back to Oaxaca to resend our returned package from Germany, we decided to make a stopover at the sea.
    Boca de Cielo or the offshore island turned out to be the perfect place to relax and unwind for a few days by the sea. Besides a small boat trip to Laguna de Joya, we enjoyed the warm water, good food, long walks on the beach and the relaxed island life.    Lue lisää

    Oaxaca III

    Gleichzeitig mit dem retournierten Paket kamen wir ein zweites Mal in unser liebgewonnenes Oaxaca an. Hier konnten wir nochmals die schöne Stadt und ihr großartiges Essen genießen und die Sachen nachholen, die wir beim ersten Mal nicht geschafft hatten. Außerdem wurden wir am ersten Tag von einer Strasenparade von Studierenden überrascht.
    An der Stelle noch ein hinweis auf María Lorena Ramírez, eine mexikanische Langstreckenläuferinaus dem Volk der Raramuri, die mit einfachen Plastiksandalen mehre, internationale Ultramarathon gewonnen hat. Ihr Bild auf einem der vielen bunten Wände zu sehen, hat uns sehr gefreut. Wir hatten ein paar Monate zuvor einen Doku über sie gesehen.

    At the same time as the returned package, we arrived a second time in our beloved Oaxaca. Here we could once again enjoy the beautiful city and its great food and catch up on the things we had not managed to do the first time. In addition, we were surprised by a parade of students on the first day.
    I would like to mention María Lorena Ramírez, a Mexican long-distance runner from the Raramuri people, who has won several international ultramarathons with simple plastic sandals. Seeing her picture on one of the many colorful walls made us very happy. We had seen a documentary about her a few months earlier.    Lue lisää

    Als Ausgangspunkt für den Grenzübertritt nach Guatemala kehrten wir noch einmal nach San Cristóbal zurück. Da uns die Reiseagentur einmal vergessen hatte, wurden aus geplanten 2 Nächten, dann doch drei. Das bekannte Hostel, unser Lieblingsobstverkäufer auf der anderen Straßenseite, das Ultimate Team Krakens, der beste Tamalesstand, die schöne Gassen und Märkte... all das fühlte sich ungewohnt vertraut und schon ein bisschen wie Heimat an. Insgesamt war es auch der Ort, an dem wir am meisten Zeit auf unserer Reise verbracht haben.

    As a starting point for the border crossing to Guatemala, we returned once again to San Cristóbal. Since the travel agency had forgotten us once, 2 planned nights became three. The well-known hostel, our favorite fruit seller across the street, the Ultimate Team of Krakens, the best tamales stand, the beautiful alleys and markets... all this felt familiar and already a bit like home. Overall, it was also the place where we spent the most time on our trip.    Lue lisää

    After three months in Mexico, we finally headed over the border to Mexico. Our shuttle ride was chaos from start to finish (with a brief interlude to walk across the border). Approximately 12 hours later, we are excited for the next chapter in our travel adventure!

    Nach drei Monaten in Mexiko sind wir endlich über die Grenze nach Mexiko gefahren. Die Fahrt mit dem Shuttle war von Anfang bis Ende chaotisch (mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung, um über die Grenze zu gehen).     Welcome to Guatemala! Our first few days were spent in Quetzaltenango, aka Xela in Guatemala's western highlands. It was a bit of a quiet town in one of the country's poorer regions, but a wonderful place to know some lovely Guatemaltecos and enjoy the mountain scenery!

    Willkommen in Guatemala! Unsere ersten paar Tage verbrachten wir in Quetzaltenango, auch bekannt als Xela, im westlichen Hochland Guatemalas. Es war eine etwas ruhige Stadt in einer der ärmeren Regionen des Landes, aber ein wunderbarer Ort, um einige nette Guatemalteken kennenzulernen und die Berglandschaft zu genießen!    Lue lisää

    Near Xela, we joined volunteer guides from the organization Quetzaltrekkers (they do great work supporting kids in the region - check them out!) to climb the volcano Santa Maria. It was a long climb, and even if it was a bit cloudy at the top, in incredibly relaxing to enjoy nature with a fun group of people.

    In der Nähe von Xela schlossen wir uns freiwilligen Führern der Organisation Quetzaltrekkers an (sie leisten großartige Arbeit bei der Unterstützung von Kindern in der Region - besuchen Sie sie online!), um den Vulkan Santa Maria zu besteigen.
