  • Innsbruck - Day 2

    April 14 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

The day started with fantastic news in an e-mail from Myles saying “It’s done.” And it proceeded from there to be a great day, first of all, with an excellent tour guide leading us through the history of power imposed by the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian, as viewed in the statues (Black Men) surrounding his sarcophagus. So much to take in, followed by delightful laughter and sharing with six other ‘older women,’ over lunch. Jacques presented us with a lecture (way too long) in “in the Bar, at six,” and we carried on over dinner.Read more

  • Innsbruck cont’d

    April 14 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

This wonderful day started off with an e-mail from Myles announcing “It’s done.” What happy news. The day built from there. We had the best guide to introduce us to the treasures and history embedded in the columns of “The Black Men” surrounding the sarcophagus of Emperor Maximilian. This guide wove the history of the Hapsburg dynasty together with knowledge of the accumulation of power and wealth of other European dynasties we have learned about other trips. He then introduced us to the treasures of the old town with its medieval buildings such as the Golden Roof, and the scenic banks of the Inn River, in such a way that we could grasp the wisdom of city planning in the days of Maria-Theresa. I joined old and new women friends to laugh and share over lunch and repeated the fun of that at dinner.Read more

  • Innsbruck - Day 3

    April 15 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The morning involved a visit to the Arts and Crafts Museum which at first, I was not very interested in. I was, however, fortunate to tour around with Renate who had lived in Austria as a child. As her memories came flooding back, she was able to share with me her approximations of what most items were, and she gave me new eyes to see. I did not take the cable car up the mountain, but those who did enjoyed their excursion above the clouds. It was a free night for dinner and I was again invited to join Audrey and friends to a delightful and delicious dinner of veal vienerschnitsl, potato salad and great company with may laughs.Read more

  • And on to Salzburg. . .

    Apr 17–24 in Austria ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

We had our last glimpse of Innsbruck and out first of the surrounding mountains when the clouds had disappeared as we said goodbye to this gem on Saturday morning. Our path took us through prosperous farm towns then on to Built in the late 1890s by mad King Ludwig. So garish - more money than common sense of taste. But the ride across the lake to reach that destination was fun. Our home for the next few days is Hotel Untersberg just outside StrasbergRead more
