    September 18, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After 27hrs travel we are here. A suprise visit from Moo was the start to an amazing 1st day ....as was the view at the end of our street! We moved from our hotel room to our airbnb and met Maria (ahhhh Maria I hear Cambey sigh). Our apartment is AMAZING. Windows open directly onto a busy, bustling street full of tourists, gelato shops and a souvenir shop - perfect spot for people watching. We all jumped on a hop-on-hop-off bus for 2 tours around Rome, Molly went back to the circus and we wandered tbe streets at night ...and stumbled upon the Trevi fountain.Read more

  • Plans interrupted by the Pope!

    September 19, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We got up at 5.50am to catch a train to Vatican City see the Sistine Chapel (which really paid off as we were practically alone in there) and then walked around to the Basillica....but the Pope was talking so the Basillica was closed - we'll have to come back. A quick trip to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain (we WILL come back), a rest on the Spanish Steps before dinner at the lit up Colosseum with Cambey and Molly.Read more

  • Pompeii

    September 20, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Up early for a day trip to Pompei... what an amazing place. After a very, very hot day we popped in to Brewdog for a quick beer - and left 4 beers later, before weaving our way around the lit up Colosseum on our way home #gottaloveRomeRead more

  • Colosseum

    September 21, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

What a day....Colosseum, Cat Sanctuary and Roman forum (via a short 4km get lost detour). The Colosseum was incredible - a childhood dream come true. We clocked up 22 000 steps! While I patted cats, in a sanctuary on the site of Julius Ceasears murder, Matt stumbled upon an old water tank which turned out to be the Pantheon - Wow!!! Went home to cook pasta...what we thought was tomato passito turned out to be chilli jam. A quick trip across the road to cool our mouths with a gelato.🍦Read more

  • Buns of steel!

    September 22, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Up at 5.30am to see the Basillica - walked up all 532 steps to the top (no elevator for us) and back down again. Then caught a train to visit Molly's circus family in Lido di Ostia (beach resort town of Rome) and convince them that she really is coming home with us - they want her to stay! We walked the 2km to the Mediteranian and went for a paddle before training it back to Rome. Finished the day (after a 3hr rest) taking a stroll around the old part of Rome drinking Roscitto in a plastic wine glass (with a bit of nun spotting thrown in) while Matt and Mat went Irish pub-crawling...all arriving at our HUGE front door at the same time.Read more

  • A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever

    September 23, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Started with a sleep in....8am! Matt went to find ANOTHER church then we met up and visited the Non Catholic cemetry - resting place of Keats and Shelley (and a pyramid circa 14BC). A delicious lunch at a small Ristorante in an out of the way part of the city, then a slow wander home for a siesta before heading out for our last night in Roma - Matt managed to find yet one more basillica!Read more

  • Arrivederci Roma..... Ciao Firenze

    September 24, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Took my last look out the window at Kebab man and Junkshop man before leaving Roma and catching the fast train to Florence....met Molly at the station with a VERY big bag - lucky Papa is a big strong man! Strolled around and had our 1st aperole spritz (after which, Di wanted to go on a crub prawl) then enjoyed pasta looking out over the Duomo for Cambey's birthday (Cambey thought Molly's pants showed too much leg and helped her "fix" them before going out). Due or tre wines later and we all hit the sack ....at a cool 21° - lovely!Read more

  • Florence

    September 25, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Caught the " Hop on hop off" bus to get our bearings around town and learn a little of the history. Went up into a hillside town with an incredible view over the city, then enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the Boboli gardens before walking across the medieval bridge of Ponte Vecchio where Molly drooled over the jewelry shops and designer labels...Prada? Who is Prada? A quick drink at Brewdog on the way home ......where Matt cooked a delicious pasta pesto!Read more

  • Siena

    September 26, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Off to see Siena. Caught a bus from the local bus stop and drove thru the Tuscan hills for an hour and a half before arriving at the bottom of a walled citadel - with a huge local market which runs each Wednesday....Molly was VERY excited....Matt not so much😁. We then wandered thru medievil streets looking for the "Zebra Church". Matt paid to go in while Molly and I thought a gelato and cafe shot a much better use of our money. Caught a bus home (feeling like locals) then while Molly scrubbed and tanned, Matt and I wandered the lit up streets of Florence and "happened" to pass Brewdog - 3 very nice IPAs later we staggered home to rest up for our trip to Pisa tomorrow.Read more

  • Pisa

    September 27, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

With Molly's help, we jumped on a train and headed to Pisa....(our expectations were low as we had been told by many people that apart from the tower there is not much there). We found a bustling town square with market stalls.... (Matt was SO excited). We bought a princess ring for Molly and a pair of pants.....before buying cheese, bagettes and chocolate ready for a Pisa picnic. A stroll up medieval streets took us to the tower and cathedral.....it was fun watching everyone making fools of themselves taking photos, before we joined them. A picnic on the one bit of grass you are allowed to walk on gave us the energy for a tour of the cathedral, baptismal tower and surrounding crypts - where 1 maths nerd (Matt) found another math nerd (Fibernacci)'s crypt. A lovely, relaxing day!Read more

  • Wandering Florence

    September 28, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Spent today wandering - best way to look around! Enjoyed an aperol spritz with lunch....and afternoon tea.....and dinner. We were running out of toilet paper so Molly showed us how the circus gypsys do it. Matt, Molly and Cambey climbed the Duomo dome while Di and I wandered the market stalls, then all met up for dinner at a street food market hall - a great way to say goodbye to Florence. Off to Venice tomorrow.Read more

  • Off to Venice

    September 29, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We had to catch the 11.25am train to Venice today so we all had a lie in before packing up and moving on. Molly was very excited to return and to tell the truth, I think we were all ready to leave Florence. Somehow Cambey got left to lug "The Purple People Eater" (Molly's bag) but we managed to find our place with no problems. The view from the balcony was amazing, so after a quick trip to the supermarket we set out to explore and eat. We didn't get far before Matt found a craft beer pub and we found a place selling Aperol Spritz for €2.50 so we settled down on some stairs and watched the boats sail past. A quick stroll through the night markets finished the day and we are all looking forward to exploring more tomorrow. Venice looks beautiful!Read more

  • Venice

    September 30, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We got up early and headed out to explore the city. Molly was excited to rediscover the places she had been with Lizzie last November. We climbed St Mark's Cathedrals dome and had an amazing view over that part of the city. We than strolled along the waterfront, stopping to buy salad rolls (and cheesecake) to eat at the park at the end. Another wander through the narrow alleys brought us home where we rested for an hour before setting out to find Molly's pesto pasta place - worth the walk! As we sat by a canal to eat, 3 churches' bells began chiming against each other - magic! Another walk home (only getting slightly lost) and Molly went to bed while we took a glass of wine down to our canal and sat and watched the world go by. Venice is a magic place.Read more

  • A Rainy Day in Venice

    October 1, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

After checking the weather forecast (90%chance of rain at 2pm) we decided to do our obligatory gondola ride early rather than later. Although Molly was a little disappointed that he didn't sing, it was still interesting to see Venice from the water - and we sailed past Marco Polo's house! We then strolled along the water front heading towards ANOTHER church (what a shame.... it was closed) before making our way to St Mark's Cathedral - with a quick lunch break on the way.....a piece of pizza and a spritza sitting on an old bridge. It started to rain as we waited to go in so we got to see the old down pipes in action - straight from the roof to the footpath below. Amazing mosaics on the floor....but no photos allowed.☹ We then walked home in the rain laughing at all the umbrellas that suddenly appeared (it was soooooo nice to feel rain on our faces). A quick stop at our local supermarket - inside a 300yr old theatre complete with murals on the ceiling - to pick up chips, chocolate, spritzas and beeria, then home for a few hours to listen to the rain falling in the canal outside our window. We decided to celebrate our last night in Italy with a dinner at a local restaurant so we put on our rain jackets, walked down our alleyway, crossed the bridge and walked into the pub across the canal. Cambey tried raw mince but ended up feeding it to the canal fish on the walk home after smuggling it out in his pocket. An impromptu performance by Di and Mat on our piano finished off a lovely last day together. Tomorrow they head off early on the next part of their trip, while we pack up and say Arrivederci Italy - Gidday Australia!Read more

  • We Still Call Australia Home

    October 3, 2018 in the United Arab Emirates ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

On our way home - we'll be tucked up in our own beds in 31hrs time. Molly and I ducked into the local supermarket to buy a few last bars of chocolate and we were off. 1st leg (Venice to Dubai) was a short 5 1/2 hrs.....a 3 hr stop over.....then the last 14hrs to Sydney. Makes the 3 hr drive to Bathurst seem like nothing.Read more
