    Edinburgh

    July 11, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Seems eerily deserted. Not sure why , maybe a Holiday, lots of places coded yesterday, small shop etc. Not the big places. We had a nice lunch in a French bakery, but did not eat any cake or croissants.
    Rain and misty weather.
Walked to Leith in the evening. Ate chips in the street.
Let's see what day 2 brings.

    July 12, 2017 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Day three , woke up to warm sunshine.
Passed on bnb breakfast. It was no good.
Heading to Glasgow. Bus is cheaper than the train, we found.
Walked. 20 miles yesterday, visiting all required venues. Started out wet and foggy. Ended with Sun.
Two days was fine as we did not go into the castle. Read about the beer drinking, cigarette smoking , ammunition carrying Polish bear that was made a private in the Army after he was adopted by Auschwitz survivors. There was a bronze statue of him in the park..
Lunch in a place called union of genius. Good soup!

  • Hike!

    July 23, 2017 in England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We started out to hike around the lake but without a map or any any prep we got on the wrong trail. Climbed up a skree trail until fear drove us back. Just as well for our safety sake.
We got on to correct trail, which the an on the youth hostel told e about. We pulled in to ask for a map, and he let us leave the car there. We did the up,along, down trail a dit was specracular. 8 hours of hiking, including our 2hour error hike. Great day out. Sore legs tonight. $18 hiking shoes from Costco did the job.Read more

  • Odense

    August 12, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Lovely little town. Arrived from Hamburg last night.
    4 hour drive, boring scenery.
    Rain all day.
We had a nice lunch in a little place called soup and bread. Owned by a Canadien, selling Thai food in Denmark.
It is very small and very quiet. We stayed a little out of the center. You would certainly need a car.
There are apple trees, plum trees and cherries growing everywhere.

  • Stop over in Amsterdam.

    August 15, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We got in here yesterday after driving back from Odense. The journey took 9 hours in total, with 4 stops. Keera drove too, no better place to try out gears shifting than on the autobahn. They drive so fast, our little rental was being wobbled about when the flew past.Read more

  • Things to temember

    August 15, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The drive from Hamburg to Odense was boring, but at least it stopped raining. Corn and cows, four hours. I did not realise it was that far. However it was lovely to be in Denmark. My experience was that it was quiet, tidy, lovely and most people did speak English which is helpful as I have no idea about the language. It is very expensive. I nearly fell over at the $65, cost of filling the mini rental car.
We went to Aero on the ferry. A really beautiful place, the houses were like doll houses, so small and colourful. We rented bikes, but it was too cold to swim.clothng optional beaches. I put my feet in the Baltic sea. Lovely little beach huts. Privately owned.
I will be back to Denmark, with a phrase book.

  • Amsterdam.

    August 16, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌫 15 °C

My initial impression was that it is dirty and overcrowded, well it is in the centre. However out the area of Jordaan , it was really lovely. Less bike mania, much less crowded and nice restaurants. We ate good Thai food in *"Billy Thais" and had good ice cream on the same Straact. We had Apple cake in Winkels and that was good too. We took a hop on hop off canal tour but it would have been better to just do a single guided boat tour. It worked for us as it was pouring rain so we stayed on. Rembrandt square was interestitng for the 3d sculpture of the midnight painting .
The hotel Clemens was fine. Tiny room but good bed . Decent breakfast and centrally located across from Ann Frank house. That was booked out so I was unable to see it. The question to get in were literally a half a mile long.
I prefer Brugge to here. Canals and bikes but much smaller.
Amsterdam is not really for wandering unless you get up early. There are bikes, mopeds, small electric cars, trams and cars. Add that to lost tourists, me included, stopping to look at maps and phones, it all leads to a kind of stressful navigation of the streets.

  • Wrap up Amsterdam.

    August 17, 2017 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

My last day was a people watching bonanza. I had the whole day to wander before flying out at 9 pm. I was able to leave my backpack at the hotel, which was very convenient. It was quite warm all day. I ate a chocolate croissant type pastry which was very nice. Also an apple flapper which was also excellent. I resisted the chocolate sprinkles on my toaat, a local treat, also a croquettes from a vending machine, and pickled herring on a roll.
The trip was great. I was glad to visit.

  • Wanderings in town.

    August 23, 2017 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

I have not been keeping close track of my activities, but I do something every day.
Last Friday I met Daphna and Lorraine and Collette for dinner at a place called the Larder. It was noisy but fine. I also went out to UCD to try to get into the Irish women's rugby game. I did not get in and they got hammered by France. I saw some of the players, big as houses.
On Saturday I watched Mayo draw against Kerry. I went to Jacinta and Philip and I watched. It was pouring rain all afternoon.
On Monday Jacinta met Nuala in her Marconi suite in the Marine Hotel. We walked the pier the had pizza and wine in the room, great stuff!
On Tuesday I took the hop on bus tour around Dublin like a tourist, , as Nuala gave me a ticket. It was interesting.
On Wed I visited a money exhibition at the AIB Bank in the IFC. Then I hopped on the dart and went to Howth. Chips, tea a boat trip around Ireland's Eye, a walk around Howth head and a lot of blackberries along the way. It was a lovely sunny day.
