  • Elephant rescue

    August 3, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

They have 127 rescue elephants here. Some were held as circus animals forced to do things by hurting their extremely sensitive ears, top of their head and cheeks, some were used to entertain tourists and carry them around you can see that there naturally curved back has gone flat because of the weight and their naturally wrinkeld skin got smooth through the friction of the weight they carry. There are animals that stepped on landmines in Myanmar whith chared feet, and animals that had serious accidents like hip displacements while they were being worked in the jungle collecting wood. The interesting thing is when they came here they choose a friend animal whith which they spend their days and in some cases take care of. So all these new families are formed here of elephants that adopted each other and form a new groep that they look out for and take care of. There are really young rescue animals ( under 5) and very old above 70 years. During covid the foundation was able to rescue a lot (ca 30 animals) by buying them of their owners that used them for entertaining tourists and had no business. By offering the owners money for the elephants the rescue centre made sure the elephants survived but also gave the owners the chance to start a new less cruel business.Read more

  • It is life not work

    August 3, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Every single elephant has his own caretaker that is with the elephant all day long. He feeds and takes care of his elephant and walks with it, swims with it etc. At the end of the day they gather all the elephants together from all over the huge terrain to lock them in the sleeping quarter’s for the elephants to be safe a night. That is when all the caretakers that live with their families with their elephant, gather together. The kids play in the field where the elephants roamed during the day, the women gather and chat, most of them probably have jobs here in the kitchen the cleaning etc, and the man hang out around their scooters, chat and smoke. It is not 9 to 5. It is life. It is extremely though but at the same time so zen to move with your elephant all day.Read more

  • Surat Thani

    August 5, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

  • Dipping into diving

    August 7, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

First day of the open water scuba course we spend most of the day doing all kinds of exercises in a pool. We now know (again) what to do when we loose our mask or get water in it, what to do when we run out of air, how to go down and come up safely etc. And we did a theory exam so now we can identify all kinds of possible symptoms of decompression disease and nitrogen poisoning ;-) being in the pool was very refreshing and a good way to cope with the heat. And it was nice to see how fast Anne Max and Phileas pick up the skills and how generally cool they are.Read more

  • First day Koh Tao

    August 7, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Arriving yesterday was a bit of a shock. After hours shaking in the very hot boat we arrived on the very hot island and … we were not alone. It was a bit overwhelming the mix of reggae hippies thai and a lot of often dutch tourists. But now we are settled in a cosy hostel just of the main road. Our neighbour is some bizarre reggae club, we just have to inhale deeply from our balcony to get stoned and can listen to no women no cry… but we are getting in the groove.Read more
