Lovely first evening!

We met our host at the entry to the old city (Pile Gate). Marijana walked us to our home for the next 4 nights. It’s a super charming 300 year old flat - third floor up. We enjoyed a lovely seafood dinner at a restaurant near the port. We wandered a bit on our way home and saw an extremely well-dressed gaggle of people along with a lovely bride and groom. We walked through the city walls to a bar perched on the cliff. Next time we stop for drinks! We are exhausted but not too much to appreciate the amazing surroundings!Read more

Second day morning tour of old city

This morning we met up with our host and tour guide Marijana (a Dubrovnik native) who showed us around the old city. Highlights: 15th century Sephardic synagogue (2nd oldest in Europe after Prague) and adjoining Jewish museum, oldest continuously operated pharmacy in a Franciscan monastery, and hearing and seeing the history of the 1991-1995 Homeland War that Marijana lived through.Read more
TravelerDriving through Croatia in 2005 we would occasionally see buildings that still had bullet holes in the side. I must have been awful to live through.

While Lauren and Zoey napped, Scott and Noah further explored old Dubrovnik, going to the Rector’s Palace (old seat of power of the country), an exhibition of Salvador Dalí art, another art museum, and an overlook. Oh and we got more gelato 😋Read more

Sevond day evening dinner on Mount Srd

We visited the Fort Lovrijenac and saw amazing views of the Old City and the Dalmatian Coast. We then climbed what seemed like 30,000 stairs to take a gondola to Mount Surd where we enjoyed a wonder meal with the most amazing views. We finished with a visit to the museum of the Homeland War. Back down to gelato and Dutch Blitz.Read more

Ferry to the island, explored ruins of monastery, learned Richard the Lionhearted was shipwrecked on the island on way back from Crusades; kids and Scott swam in the Adriatic Sea, Noah and Scott hiked up to Fort Royal built by Napoleon’s soldiers.Read more

Kayak trip!

Enjoyed pizza post-Lokrum island and then a siesta before heading back to the water for a guided kayak trip along the coast. Stopped at a huge cave halfway!
Traveler The photo from the cave is very nice, good composition. I see there is a path on the right to get out of the cave without a boat. An a cruise ship anchored in the distance.

Full day excursion to Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor. We went to Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks island, and Kotor. Absolutely beautiful scenery and a funny guide!

Anniversary adventure

Scott chartered a boat for our anniversary. We spent the day enjoying the gorgeous bay of Split, stopping at Trogir and Stomorska. We had a delicious lunch and frolicked in the clear blue water. ❤️

Chasing Waterfalls in Plitvice NP

Walked over 8 miles through the absolutely beautiful Plitvice National Park. Boardwalks over the river, lakes and waterfalls. Saw two snakes, lizards, fish and lots of tourists.
TravelerPlitvice is gorgeous. One guidebook described it as a cross between Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon.

Champion League Quest

Scott and Noah were determined to find a public place to watch the biggest game of the year. Despite calling ahead to a restaurant that said they would show the game, when we arrived they said they were too busy to show it. So we were directed to a pizza place and bar that was showing the game but after we ordered drinks they said their oven was broken so they could not serve food and everyone was smoking. So we ended up watching it at a convenience store, just the 4 of us. And one of the teams has a Croatian player so Scott was particularly disappointed with lack of fan interest. Plus more photos Plitvice waterfalls because they are awesome.Read more

Drove through lots of rain and saw beautiful countryside on our way to the two beach towns and then along the coast down to Pula

Pula / city walking tour

We had a wonderful walking tour of Pula this morning. We learned so much about the many historical layers (like lasagne!) of this beautiful city - from pre-Roman Histri to the Romans to the Slavs (Croats) the Venetians to the Austro-Hungarians to the Italians/fascists to Yugoslavia to Hrvatska/Croatia. And then we went to a beautiful, if rocky, beach where we enjoyed the cold, clear water. Such a rich history and a beautiful country!Read more

Three countries in one day!

We drove from Croatia, last stop Porec, into Slovenia for lunch in Poran and then to Trieste Italy where we will stay for 2 nights. We also visited the only concentration camp in Italy. Very somber, but important to remember.Read more
