St. Ives

Today, we're starting in Penzance. We spent the night on the Sainsburys parking lot. Connie has found a charity shop nearby, so after a light breakfast, off we went. The Cornwall Hospice Care Penzance furniture shop is only a short walk away. The furniture shop is well sorted with everything that one could need and it doesn't take us too long to find quite a few items that take our fancy. I, as usual, am looking for any Rupert the Bear books, so I diligently search through the children's books section. I find at least two other story books, but not what I'm really looking for. So I asked the sales guy, and he said yes, they did have at least two books in store the other week, but he'd have to take a look and see if they were still there. So off he went. Unfortunately, by his return, he said they were no longer there. He then proceeded to tell me of another charity shop in St Ives, the Retro shop, that also could have the Rupert the Bear books as that is something that they would specialise in. So with this info and the several items we had purchased, we left Penzance and drove to St Ives, which is only a forty minute drive away. Upon arrival in St Ives, we take a walk along the beach and then through the small and narrow streets of the town. With its beautiful little houses and quaint little shops and narrow streets, we could well imagine how overrun this place must be in summer with all the tourists running around. In the Retro shop, I ask the gentleman there if he had any Rupert the Bear books, and he promptly produces two from the shelf. My heart does a big jump. But when he tells me their going for seventy-five pounds each, I quickly come back to reality. That's way out of my price range. So as we turn to paying for the four items that Connie has found, we come into conversation the gentleman and it turns out that, after we mention that we're from Germany, he had also spent three years there back in the 1980s with the British Army, in Münster. Before we make our way back to the camper, we stop off at Tarquin's Cornish Gin Shop, where an elegant tall blue bottle with the name Connie Glaze catches eyes. After a short testing of various other Gin samples, we settle for Connies Glaze and leave St Ives and drive on to our next destination, the town Bodmin.

Heute starten wir in Penzance. Wir haben die Nacht auf dem Parkplatz von Sainsbury verbracht. Connie hat einen Wohltätigkeitsladen in der Nähe gefunden, also nach einem leichten Frühstück machen wir uns auf den Weg. Der Cornwall Hospice Care Penzance Möbelladen ist nur einen kurzen Spaziergang entfernt. Der Möbelladen ist gut sortiert mit allem, was man brauchen könnte, und es dauert nicht allzu lange, bis wir einige Artikel finden, die uns gefallen. Ich suche wie immer nach Rupert the Bear-Büchern und durchsuche sorgfältig den Kinderbuchbereich. Ich finde mindestens zwei andere Geschichtenbücher, die mir gefallen, aber nicht das, wonach ich wirklich suche. Also frage ich den Verkäufer, und er sagt ja, sie hatten letzte Woche mindestens zwei Bücher im Laden, aber er müsste nachsehen, ob sie noch da seien. Also ging er los. Leider sagte er bei seiner Rückkehr, dass sie nicht mehr da seien. Er erzählte mir dann von einem anderen Wohltätigkeitsladen in St Ives, dem Retro Shop, der auch die Rupert the Bear-Bücher im Sortiment haben könnte, da dies etwas ist, auf das sie sich spezialisiert haben. Mit diesen Informationen und den verschiedenen Artikeln, die wir gekauft hatten, verließen wir Penzance und fuhren nach St Ives, was nur vierzig Minuten entfernt ist. Bei unserer Ankunft in St Ives machen wir einen Spaziergang am Strand entlang und dann durch die kleinen und engen Gassen der Stadt. Mit seinen schönen kleinen Häusern, malerischen Geschäften und engen Straßen können wir uns gut vorstellen, wie überlaufen dieser Ort im Sommer mit all den herumlaufenden Touristen sein muss. Im Retro Shop frage ich den Herrn dort, ob er Rupert the Bear-Bücher hat, und er holt prompt zwei aus dem Regal. Mein Herz macht einen großen Sprung. Aber als er mir sagt, dass sie jeweils fünfundsiebzig Pfund kosten, komme ich schnell wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurück. Das ist weit über meinem Budget. Also, als wir uns darauf vorbereiten, die vier von Connie gefundenen Artikel zu bezahlen, kommen wir ins Gespräch mit dem Herrn, und es stellt sich heraus, dass er, nachdem wir erwähnt haben, dass wir aus Deutschland sind, ebenfalls drei Jahre dort in den 1980er Jahren mit der britischen Armee in Münster verbracht hat. Bevor wir uns auf den Weg zurück zum Wohnmobil machen, halten wir bei Tarquin's Cornish Gin Shop an, wo uns eine elegante, hohe blaue Flasche mit dem Namen Connies Glaze ins Auge fällt. Nach einer kurzen Verkostung verschiedener anderer Gins entscheiden wir uns für Connies Glaze und verlassen St Ives, um zu unserem nächsten Ziel, der Stadt Bodmin, zu fahren.Read more
