  • Making friends with the locals...

    10 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

The little boy joined us for a couple of miles until he got bored and cycled off with a friend...

The boy on the moped was taking his granny 50km to the next town to get her medicine...

The boy (with his granny) told us we had good legs and that his English teacher was cute but not as cute as Rosie. Result.

The girl on the back of the tandem is cycling to Saigon with her newly acquired husband...

The 2 girls were on their way to school...

And Olly got handed a baby while his owner made us an omelette...

  • Dinner party with the locals!

    11 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Although the room they provided was a little 'tired' (cockroaches, stinky bed sheets, rats living in the bathroom etc), the host family invited us for supper where we sat around drinking rice vodka and chatting about this and that (via google translate) and had a genuinely lovely evening.
A meal of liver, lung and chopped up intestine filled with offal was on offer, so needless to say we opted for boiled rice with some surprisingly tasty river fish instead.

    17 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We had two lovely nights here in the four seasons hotel(see pic!) Hue is a pretty busy town with lots going on, the old walled city was bombed quite extensively by the Americans but the walls remain intact. We will continue to head south towards Hoi An and then head back inland back on to the Ho Chi Minh highway.Leia mais

  • Hai Vân

    19 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Just got to the north side of the Hai Van pass which is meant to be a spectacular road to drive, it goes up to about 500 meters on the coast so hopefully the weather will be good tomorrow. After 70km this morning we thought we'd stop and stay the night here before we tackle this, then it's on to Hoi An.Leia mais

  • Forget yesterday, today was the hardest

    23 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Some great scenery today as we walked the bike up most of the hills. It was far too hot to cycle even by 8 am. The bike app said we did 2500 meters of vertical today (I think that sounds too much) but anyway sounds impressive!! We're going through about 6 litres of water every 4 hours.

We stopped for lunch by a huge waterfall which we should have gone for a swim in but we were more interested in eating and drinking (water!).

  • 520km to go!!

    25 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

A long 90km ride today in undulating terrain. Another 2 days of that and we will be in the coffee capital of Vietnam which we are very excited about. We've also discovered that the freshly squeezed sugar cane drink they sell at the side of the road wherever you look tastes surprisingly good and if the ice doesn't kill you, it works brilliantly as an energy drink too!

However yesterday we had a nasty experience involving a beef hot pot. The selection of 'restaurants' near our home stay was fairly limited so when we saw a picture of a delicious bubbling pot of beefy goodness, we got excited! Despite it being the most expensive thing we've eaten in a loooong time (£4.44), it turned out to be heart, stomach, tongue and something else we're not sure about. Absolutely hideous. But we were hungry so we ate it!!

    27 de novembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

As the coffee capital of Vietnam, of course Rosie's first choice of beverage was an Oreo frappacino as soon as we arrived!!! We had a days break here to relax after doing 500km in a week.
We managed to get a local bus to Dray Sap waterfall not too far away, which despite it being dry season was a beautiful change of scenery to the dust and trucks of the high road.

320 km to go to Ho Chi Minh.

  • Ho Chi Minh

    2 de dezembro de 2016, Vietnã ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After a 4am start and some lovely rush hour traffic into Ho Chi Minh (not recommended!) we finally made it to our hotel where we proceeded to have an hour and a half long massage for 5 pounds. After cycling 130 km yesterday we felt we deserved it. We haven't clocked the exact mileage but we think it's just over 2000km we have done in Vietnam. Together with Europe that means we have cycled over 5000km in the last 5 months. The bike has behaved impeccably this time round and so has Rosie. And so here ends our honeymoon cycling trip. Now for a week on a tropical island before we head back to Hanoi on the train and fly home.Leia mais
