Beautiful Bonavista

We were among the first to get off the ferry in Argentia and made a quick stop at the information center. Immediately the views were so beautiful. We saw a sign for Randy's Convenience and Bakery so had to stop. We picked up some homemade potato soup and some baked goods. So good all of it and we had a lovely chat with the woman who worked there. We stopped again in Clarenville and met a really nice local couple. They are interested in a van so we gave them a tour and exchanged contact info. Love how friendly everyone is. We arrived in Elliston, the puffin spot by 4 and found a place to park. It was pretty busy. The first thing we noticed was the root cellars. They were everywhere. A little hobbit door in the side of a hill and when you opened the door there were steps down to a small storage area underground. So cool. Lots of visitors and some just can't behave. Lots of signs saying no dogs because the puffins view them as predators. Well we couldn't keep quiet. The pit bull in me came out and I shared the rules to a few dog owners. The puffins were on Bird Island but you could see them quite clearly. We had binoculars to see them up close. We stayed for quite awhile and were quite enchanted. On the drive in Randy saw Dustin from Destination Adventure one of our favorite You Tubers pass us heading the opposite direction. It was pretty cool and we thought they were leaving the area. It was quite a surprise when he and Emi showed up where we were. Randy ended up having a great conversation with him. The crowd was thinning out and one adventurous puffin came close to say hi. He was about 8 feet away.
There were a couple spots on iOverlanding nearby but they were already taken. We made the short drive to the Bonavista Peninsula and found a spot at Landfall Municipal Park. What a beautiful spot. We spent two nights here. There was a trail along side the park and we visited the lighthouse a couple of times. More puffins. It was a beautiful spot with spectacular views everywhere you looked.
Monday morning we went into town to the Harbour Authority for showers. While chatting with Jerry, the Harbour Master, Randy noticed a photo of a friend who had sailed to Newfoundland from Sarnia years ago. Jerry remembered them and even showed us their sign in. I had to take pictures and share. We toured the museum housing the replica of John Cabot's ship, the Matthew. It was really interesting. We were meeting up with friends from back home at the Bonavista Brewery and before they arrived we chatted with other visitors. Two couples we had connections with from Ontatio, small world. Bob and Heather had a beautiful cottage by the water for two nights and we ended up staying in their driveway. We had a lovely dinner and a great visit. We left the next morning with great memories and a load of clean laundry.Read more
