We hit the ground running today! With a Rick Steves audio guide download we headed out into a hot day in Rome! Ticked off a lot in 12kms and then headed back to our hotel for a siesta before dinner.

Colosseum and Vatican

We were up early for an 8:30am Colosseum and Palatine Hill tour to beat the heat!! An archeologist for a guide gave lots of history and fun facts! A lunch in the Travestre area and then off to a Vatican tour - what a circus! Sooo many people ......

Via Appia Antica

We joined a bike tour today along the Appian Way - the ancient road into Rome. First stop was the ancient walls and then on to the catacombs. We cycled over ancient cobblestones before stopping for lunch. Then on into the Acquedotti Parco with remains of ancient broken acqueducts and some which are still in use. 27kms later back in central Rome! A great way to see a different part of the city!! Dinner was pizza with Michael and Rose who flew in this afternoon 😊Read more

We meandered through the countryside this morning to Petriolo hot springs - not super refreshing on a hot day! Then back to our bnb for a cooking class with the owner Patrizia. We made spinach and cheese ravioli, salty cheese tarts, pork with hazelnut sauce and a Tuscan apple pie. Patrizia was so knowledgeable and entertaining. She lit candles and set the table outside for us and then washed up afterwards 😊 A highlight of our holiday for sure!!Read more

Beach day

We travelled to the coast in search of some beaches. They were sadly nowhere near as good as ours but water nonetheless! Many beaches are private with a sea of umbrellas and sun lounges. We swam at two different beaches and had lunch at a lovely traditional taverna - best lobster gnocchi ever!
In the evening an old town nearby had a food fair on - we wandered the streets and for 10€ we tried different food and wine - so yummy 😋Read more

A day discovering the beautiful Lake Como! We visited Villa Balbianello and then caught the ferry across to Bellagio and another villa and garden there. Another hot day so it was great to get back to our accommodation for a swim!Read more

We took a 35 minute drive and were in Switzerland! It seemed the drivers followed the road rules a little more and the city so clean and tidy! A stunning day reflected the lake colour and we had an amazing view after taking a funicular up Mont Bre.Read more

We travelled to Lake Garda, about 3hrs away. The bottom of the lake is wide and Riva Del Garda where we were headed is at the top which narrows right down. Along the way we stopped for lunch and checked out a garden complete with a battleship! Riva Del Garda has a lovely piazza on the river and great shops 😊Read more

After an early morning hike to the midway point up a mountain (some of the party wanted to go all the way 🙄!?) we hopped on the ferry to Limone which used to be a huge lemon growing area. As it’s steep cliffs it was all terraced and to protect the trees from the cold in winter, there were wooden frames for glass panels. After a delicious pizza for lunch back to Riva Del Garda for a laze in the sun and swim.Read more

We headed to Venice and stopped in at Verona on the way - known for the balcony of Juliette!
Another warm day and dinner on the waters edge of Venice finished the day perfectly 😊

I was feeling a bit seedy so missed the tour of Doges palace and met the others at Cafe Florian, the oldest cafe in Europe! The rain set in for the afternoon so we stayed in and relaxed.

As we wandered the streets we came across some great shops! Philip bought some great linen and then we continued on to the Jewish Ghetto - a small island all the Jews were contained on during the war. A final Italian lunch and then off to board our ship!Read more

We docked after lunch in Dubrovnik and left the boat to explore. The old town is all made of beautiful light stone and is set around a harbour. We walked part of the city walls and then explored the streets.Read more

It was a sailing day today so sleep in!! I then did a sushi making class and made some sushi that I had never seen before!! We then read, swam and ate - a good day!!

We sailed into the port very early this morning so were able to leave the ship from 7am. It is a lovely old city also and as it was so early it was lovely and quiet. We headed up to the climb the city walls again; more of a challenge than yesterday! The view was amazing 😊 After some wandering and shopping, we headed to a restaurant one of the waiters on the ship recommended. We had local fish and wine which was so fresh and yummy 😋 Philip swum at the little beach and then we headed back to the ship for formal night!Read more

We were tendered in to Santorini early in the morning as we had a tour booked. We were met by Dimitri and as we drove to Oia he gave us a geological lesson on Santorini and surrounding islands which make up the volcanic crater. We wandered around Oia for a while, catching a glimpse of the famous, well photographed blue dome. On to Santo Wines which is a cooperative winery. Here we tasted three wines with nibbles. Then onto Fira, the village with the steps and donkeys! We had lunch and a wander with many others doing the same (six cruise boats were in port 😮) We then dodged donkeys and hopped on board the ship.Read more

Back on land! We dropped our bags and headed off for Murano and Burano. Burano was an absolute highlight - less busy than Venice with brightly coloured houses! In the square some fresh seafood was being cooked up! Later on, we met up with our fellow cruisers for dinner before going our separate ways tomorrow.Read more

We had some time before we caught our plane so headed to the naval museum. Very interesting as a lot of the history of Venice is linked to the sea. Heaps of great models and actual large boats from the past. Then is was off to the airport for the journey home.Read more
