We finally arrived on Madeira. After great 3,5 hours of sleep, we got up at 1:15 am, drove to the airport in Berlin and arrived 12 hours later on this beautiful island. We picked up our rental car and drove to our main station at Porto Moniz. Since we are very tired, nothing exited happened today 🤓 besides checking out the area, drinking some cervezas 🍻 and enjoying the view out of our hotel room on our balcony with sea view ☀️

That was just the warm up

Since the pool was closed today due to high waves (pool area is linked to the ocean) we did a little “warm up” hike (“big” hike is coming up soon). ⛰️
After seeing some cows 🐮 relaxing under >100 year old laurel trees we decided to check out a nearby waterfall. The 250m altitude change done by 1123 stair steps (each way) were worth it. 🐾
After that a well deserved lunch was self grilled at a public barbecue spot, including a stunning view over the ocean.
The rest of the day was (again) spent on the balcony and with a delicious fish dinner. 🐠Read more

Funchal

Yesterday, we drove to the capital of Madeira, Funchal, in the south of the island.
We did a guided sightseeing trip by foot (as usual), found a rubber duck shop (😆 🦆), took the cable car to the top and watched people sliding down again with the famous wooden sleds 🛷
On our way back, we stopped at a little village for dinner and ordered two meat skews.
Today was relaxed, since we spend the whole day at the pool. Only when the waves reached the seating area and swept away our flip flops, thinks got a little hectic, but Kathi step up and heroically ran after them. 🌊🩴

On top of Madeira

Yesterday, wie did the most exhausting hike of our lives (so far) - to the top of the highest mountain on Madeira. 🧗
Starting at the top of the ⛰️ pico do Areeio at 1.817m we went down and up to the top of the pico Ruivo at 1861m…. and than back.
The path is very well maintained and attracts many tourists, or in other words… it was very crowded, but the views are stunning!
All in all, we did over 15km including 3766 “stair” steps and 1.095m altitude difference.
Ended the day with well deserved burgers 🍔😌
Today, our bodies are sore. So we are back at the pool, relaxing and having a “cerveja” (or two) and some “bolo de caco”. 🥖Read more

Yesterday was our last day on this Island. 🏝️ We drove to the west side and had a coffee ☕️ 🤓 and some more views. The rest of the day was spent at the pool again 🏊‍♂️ and ended with a delicious fish dinner.
The night was cut short since our flight is at 4:20 in the morning and the drive to the airport is about 1 hour. 🫠

All in all, Madeira is a very beautiful island. Perfect for hiking and cars with more than 53PS (we drove a lot in 2nd gear)
We would say it is the “island of tunnels” rather than “island of flowers”… 😅 on our way to the airport we counted 41 tunnels 🙈
