  • Display Homes

    December 18, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The trend in home building in Brisbane seems to be more more more. As for yards and gardens.... Less, less, less.

Display homes are the way of the future for prospective buyers to see what they want. Large homes on small blocks. No lawn to mow and minimal gardening. You better only have 2 cars coz that's the garage filled. The layouts are all similar with lower and upper designs similar.

Size varies a bit as does the land parcels. 400 - 600 square meters is common with houses running right up to the fence. In some cases you can't even slide up sideways.

Not for me but the current generation seem OK with the sardine blocks.

  • Mount Morgan Mine

    January 16, 2023 in Australia

    The Sign says it all!

    A Dramatic Landscape

This lookout, named after a former Mount Morgan Shire Chairman, Mr Arthur Timms, provides a dramatic view of Mount Morgan and the mine landscape.

In the foreground of the mine is the Gold Room. The north wing of this building formed part of the Chlorination Works, constructed in 1884. Behind this is the General Office. This building had three stages of construction and has served as both general office and accommodation quarters. Moving to the left we see the main stack. Completed in 1905, this stack was originally constructed using 750,000 bricks.

    A Hive of Activity

Left of the stack are the mounds of tailings, all that remains of the vast quantity of rock and earth dug from the mine, then discarded after precious ore was removed. Once there were bush, gullies and gently flowing creeks - all favourite haunts for the Mount Morgan kids.

Take a moment to close your eyes. Listen to the laughter of children as they roam the gullies and hills... hear the hum of machinery.... picture the mine as a hive of activity with men scurrying across the site. Hear the hooter and the relieved cries of the workers knocking off for another day!

This link from the sign seems problematic but ends up showing a relevant YouTube video.

  • Rockhampton Landfill Bird Hide

    January 24, 2023 in Australia

This is not really an ideal vantage point in the late afternoon. It would much better suit morning photography. Behind us is a hundred feet high Landfill of many years of Rockhampton rubbish. Now it is a transfer station where rubbish is dropped into a huge bin for pick-up to unknown destinations.

To the west though is Lagoons that are home to many water birds. That is definitely the best direction to look when visiting.
