  • Other things to see, Springbrook NP

    19 aprile 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

As I mentioned before, there is much to see besides the glow worms. Interesting fungi, intricate spider webs, rocks that have patterns and if you look very carefully, you can see the glow worm webs.

The light they emit from their bodies attract insects. The vertical web filaments traps them for food. The creatures are not actually worms but are the larval stage of a fly. While the fly lives only a couple of days, mates and dies, the larvae have a long life of around 8-9 months.

  • The old log cabin, Springbrook.

    25 aprile 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The land where the old log cabin sits was purchased in the 1960's by the Adventist Church. They decided to erect the log cabin for the purpose of providing accommodation for school camps. Eventually cabins were built and the cabin used for meeting area and meals.

Now the group allows some camping by the public with some restrictions. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. Book in is not available on Saturday which is their day of worship but guests already booked in before 4pm Friday are allowed to stay.

The spot is very pleasant with heaps of birds and pademelons making regular visits. The glow worm caves across the road about a kilometer distant are well worth seeing. We relaxed here for 3 nights with quite a bit of rain keeping us under cover.

This would be an excellent destination for a family with children.

  • Springbrook National Park

    25 aprile 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A walk in daytime here is a different kind of interesting. At night as I already explained is a natural wonder of the glow worms. In day the walk takes on a whole different light... literally.

The pathways are very good and the walk is easier than one would expect. A delightful stroll down the steps to enjoy the forest on the way to the waterfall. You don't see the glow worms but the waterfall is magnificent.

The tumbling water is deafening as it drops from high above. It collects in the cave and pools before it makes it way down the stream. The pool looks quite a nice shade of green from the reflected light of the plants outside the cave.

As you continue further along the path you end up at another view from the top of the falls. This circuit is actually about one kilometre but definitely does not seem that far. If you come here to view the glow worms, I would suggest getting here earlier to experience the other aspect.

  • Brisbane, Queensland

    25 aprile 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

For the next week Brisbane is the place. Years ago I worked and lived in this region but as always, change is inevitable. The roads have changed with some nothing like they were 36 years ago.

Driving here is not difficult but you do need to keep alert. Good rest and trip planning is required for a trouble free trip. There has been a little rain but not enough to cause any bad traffic accidents. There may be multi lane roads, but when they have all lanes filled with trucks, nobody get anywhere quickly.

Brisbane, like any large city has an abundance center of places to eat out. We try to not eat out excessively but sometime when we do we find a memorable spot. The one pictured was quite good and they have a distinctly doggie theme. Customers can bring their dogs to the outside area and the menu includes some doggie treats. Coffee and food was good.

This morning I looked out the window and this plant looked like it had lots of little diamonds on its leaves.

  • Ipswich, Queensland

    4 maggio 2018, Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

After a fun filled and hectic time in Brisbane, meeting friends and doing a lot of driving we are briefly at Ipswich.

It's a while since I have been here and it has changed quite a lot. The main city shopping centre called riverlink centre is built on the old railway yards over the Bremer River. There is the remains of an old overpass that the centre is built around. One side overlooks the Bremer and its a bit of a sobering thought to remember him high up the water rose in '74.

I had been to this centre before but entered via the undercover parking area and missed the features up top.

One can not just catch the train here. This old station is still beside "real" live railway that are part of the western line running with lots of coal and freight trains.

Every year though, the station comes alive for the Festival of Flowers. Special trains run out from Toowoomba to here where you can enjoy the flowers in the gardens or relax with a coffee from the restaurant. The theme is Dutch am very good. Going Dutch has never been better!Leggi altro

  • Crows Nest

    8 maggio 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Around 30 kilometres from Toowoomba is this small town. The van park is a good spot to stop for a couple of days so we can spend a day in Toowoomba.

We did not book as this should be a quiet little town. Imagine our surprise when we fold it packed out. There was a huge group gathered here for the weekend! Fortunately we did not require power and were able to setup camp in a small area.Leggi altro
