  • Swing Bridge at Sale

    27 lutego 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The historic swing bridge is located on the LaTrobe River about 5 kilometres south of Sale. The bridge has been restored and is a significant heritage listed structure.

The bridge allowed the many steamers to pass and provided a vehicular crossing of the river. It was designed by John Grainger and built by the Victorian government in 1883

The bridge was eventually permanently set in closed position and used for vehicle traffic until the new bridge was opened in 2002.

In 2003 major restoration was commenced. These repairs were completed in 2006 at a cost of around 1 million. The bridge is opened every Saturday and Sunday.

  • Maffra Wetlands

    28 lutego 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The town of Maffra has put in a nice boardwalk to allow one to enjoy the wetlands. Sadly the water is not high at the moment so there is not a lot to see. There is a lagoon on the other side of the area.

Around the other side one has a nice view of the water. There are some birds here but not huge numbers. A sign here says the water quality is generally OK but the carp are a problem.

Taking a walk up the walking track offers a great view over the entire wetland area. There is a string of waterholes that look like they would be all connected together in the rainy season.

  • The huge chook.

    28 lutego 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Driving along the road from Sale towards Maffra, there is a huge chook (chicken for non Aussies) sculpture. Taking a closer look reveals it is the location of a roadside stall selling...... Eggs! These people have take roadside stalls to the next level.

There is a display fridge with all sorts of produce that needs to be kept cold. Shelves of jams and displays of seasonal veggies. A money box that is made of 12mm plate mounted on a 150mm or so steel post and believe it or not, on the wall is a tablet point of sale self serve checkout with eftpos.

Is this the future of roadside stalls everywhere? Patrons are asked to smile for the security system. I often wonder what the economics of roadside stalls is but I suspect this one might be profitable.

  • Mitchel River

    1 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

This was where there was an impressive cliff. We drove to a spot with a view of the cliff then next we drove to the top. It seemed that we would need to take a drive to the other side for a decent photo. Another vantage just downstream gave a good opportunity to take a good photo.

After that we went to another spot and walked along the river until we were back at the first spot we stopped. There was supposed to be a powerful owl in the area but he eluded us.

Koalas everywhere. That's the Koala walk once you get off the ferry. They are of course asleep during the day so you will see them firmly wedged in the trees fast asleep. There were a couple that stirred when tourists walked by but soon they were back to sleep. The return via the boardwalk was rewarded by good views of the Paynesville side of the channel. Quite a few swans were hanging around. Czytaj więcej

  • Metung

    2 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This place ended up being one of the great sunsets of this trip so far. We had set up camp for the night at Chinaman's Creek and decided to walk the couple of kilometres to the town. A great little coffee shop and some further walk to the the boat ramp. By that time it was getting close to sunset. Some great pictures and then a walk back into darkness. The last bit was a but dark with no street lighting. As we walked back the moon was rising in a spectacular show. Czytaj więcej

  • Followed by Harleys

    3 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We had just turned onto the Princess highway after we had done a detour via Lakes Entrance. I have a mob of lights behind I said as I looked in the wobbly strap on trailer mirror. No, it's a car and what looks like a big mob of motorcycles. That's very strange.

Not knowing the road I picked up the pace a bit. 95kph and they were gaining very slowly. A highway patrol car slowly getting closer and he's running ahead of a lot of bikers. Soon a sign for an overtaking lane. Aha, I will let them go there.

As I reached the slow lane I dropped back to 60kph and dozens of bikes roared past. I little red car seemed to be trapped in the middle as the lane was running out. I pulled over to let them all go. Maybe a couple of hundred or more. Not sure how the little car got on. There were a couple of Hondas mixed in but we were not sure if they were lost or not.

Later we discovered that this was an annual ride called the Orbost Poker Run to benefit Ronald Macdonald house. As we drove on we saw bikes from time to time and wondered if they were lost Poker Run Riders or not. As we viewed the point where the Snowy meets the sea, the police escort and his noisy tail trailed past us again.

Where the snowy meets the sea. It is interesting how the snowy River runs along the ocean held by a long sand bank. This changes quite a bit over the years and the actual point that the river flows to the sea changes over the years. People here overlook a river and the sea for quite a bit since. Czytaj więcej

  • Cann River

    4 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Cann River is another of the small towns one finds interesting and attractive in Victoria. It's around the middle of the drive from Sydney to Melbourne when one takes the Princes Highway. That probably explains the many places one can dine or retire for the night.

There are two bakeries, a pie shop, pub, purple of motels, church info and community centre. Two service stations to fuel up the car. A caravan park is at the moment being kept open as a free camp until it can be put back in paid service.

The Cann River runs beside the town and has a decent 3k loop walk. The caravan park is really nicely arranged and seems very popular for a break in many people's journeys.

  • Cann River reserve walking track.

    5 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

An easy and pleasant walk along the river then back between the river and the highway. The sandy river has a little flowing water with some larger pools. Most of the walk is through old forest with quite a few birds calling but not many coming into view.

One curious feature is a post lined crossing of the river. The purpose may be long forgotten but one can speculate that it might have been an old causeway crossing many years ago.

The entire area floods at times and the massive amounts of fallen trees are well on the way to decomposing back into the earth.

The 3 kilometre track is well defined but care required in parts as the ground has not been graded.

  • Mallacoota

    6 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Mallacoota is a fishing centric town. Right on the coast this little town has become a bit popular with tourists. It has one of the largest tourist parks in Australia. Staying here is not cheap and if you don't book early you will be going elsewhere.

The scenery here is stunning with several nature areas. Boating groups have a fairly small number in the community and seem to garner enormous support from government. Recent coastal facilities beneficial to boating groups has seriously divided the community. The costly works now have to be maintained by council at huge expense to local ratepayers. Some have even gone as far as placing signs in trees. "Dredging sux ratepayer bux" was one such sign we saw.

All that aside, as far as ythe casual visitor is concerned it looks like one huge caravan park. Nearly all the foreshore is camping sites. Some 750 or so. Apparently this is all owned by the council. One wonders driving around where the profits go. This area extends halfway from the NSW border to Melbourne.

  • Genoa

    7 marca 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The campground at Genoa is one of the best we have stayed at. A great place to relax and enjoy the birds along the river. A short walk over the historic bridge and you are in the old town. Here there is a historic pub, the shop that was rebuilt in the 60's and the old service station.

There are are quite a few information signs around telling of the history of the area. It seems that once this was a thriving centre but like so many small towns seems to be doing it hard. If you travel this way, drop in and perhaps stay a night and enjoy a lovely area.
