Reykjavík is the biggest city in Iceland and the world’s northernmost capital. It is located in the southwest of Iceland. Reykjavík has a population of around 140,000 as of 2026, and the surrounding Capital Region has a population of around 252,000, constituting approximately 64% of Iceland's population.

Our morning was filled with a bus tour of the city which really doesn’t help with getting a true flavor of what the city has to offer. We did make a stop at the Árbær Open Air Museum. It is Iceland's home to a fascinating collection of historical buildings, most of which were relocated from Reykjavík’s city center. Each of the buildings has a story to tell.

Our afternoon was filled with partaking in an Icelandic tradition, bathing in a thermal lagoon. Sky Lagoon, located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, features a dramatic ocean-front infinity edge and a signature 7-step thermal ritual. Each step designed to take you through a “healing journey”. We loved the experience. They need to have these in Chicago!!
