Heimaey is a small island about 4.5 miles off Iceland's south coast and is home to around 4,500 people. It was formed by volcanic activity and covers about 5 square miles. Despite its rugged landscape, the island has fertile soil and supports plenty of plant and bird life especially Puffin, that come here every year to breed.

A major landmark is Eldfell Volcano, which erupted unexpectedly on January 23, 1973. The eruption lasted for several months, covering parts of the town with lava and ash and forcing all residents to evacuate. Many later returned and rebuilt their community. The town has memorialized that period in their history by establishing the earthquake museum which includes various artifacts.

We spent our time hiking to the top of Eldfell for great views of the island and coastline as well as taking a boat ride around some of the smaller islands.
