• Mera Peak Trek (8) - Summit Push (1)

    26 октября 2023 г., Непал ⋅ 🌙 -7 °C

Here we are, at 5.800m, at 3.00pm, in all our clothes we have incl. 3 pairs of gloves. Let’s go up, step by step, veryyy slowly. The only think we could see were lights of head lamps in front of us and behind us. Every step felt heavy. Every movement except of walking or pushing the sticks into the ice felt wrong and loosing the rhythm. Even for swiping my nose I needed to stop and take some extra breaths. I got quite fast quite hungry what is quite unusually but not a bad sign, because in the high altitude you are usually not hungry at all and have to force yourself to eat. So my guide was so kind and had a look into my jacket and looked for my chocolate bars because I was just not able to move my fingers because of my 3 pairs of gloves. And I needed to put them quite deep into my jackets because it was around -25/-30 degrees.
After around 1/1,5h Gabi was apparently suffering because she had a lot of pain in her feet. Her tooth’s were very cold and already blue/purple. Tshering heated them up again and a random unknown guy stopped and gave Gabi a heating pad for her shoes. After 20/25min we could continue.
It got steeper and steeper. We had some sections in between with around 50/55 degrees. After the last steep sections, the sun came up. What a nice feeling - a little release. We were at around 6.000/6.100m!
We continued, still couldn’t see the summit, our energy level was super low and both of us said or thought: „We don’t have to go up there. It’s already nice over here.“ But no, we continued. Again Gabi needed the warm hands from Tshering. Her feeds were frozen - blue and purple. We didn’t know if we could continue. Together or no one. Tshering gave his best and brought Gabi‘s feet’s back to life. The sun helped as well. We had a snack and continued. And finally we could see the peak. It was not far anymore.
We arrived at the edge before the last push to the summit. „Just“ a small hill was left. But it was steep. But at that point we knew we can do it and we made it. We already cried and hugged and smiled.
We started the last push up without our backpacks. For these last 100m and 30/40m in altitude we needed around 15-20min. It was 8.30am and there was a oxygen level of around 44% as we summited Mount Mera at 6.476m!!!
