    Westbury

    December 18, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This is the village where my four x great grandfather John McDonald Singer was sent as a English convict (arrived in Hobart in 1829 on board the 'York' for stealing) to the Westbury Probation Station (in operation from 1842-1845) (now the Westbury Recreation Ground buildings) where due to his ability to read and write, he was working. In 1842, John received his Conditional Pardon and in 1845, he received his Ticket of Leave for helping to extinguish a fire at the Station and headed back to Hobart with his wife Mary and their 5 (out of 11 children they would go on to have). Westbury was also the location of a convict hiring depot, in operation from 1842-1847.

I have spent the last few hours at the Westbury Historical Society seeing if there was any more information about John and I was given maps of the Station which was gratefully received. Thank you Amanda!!
