  • Richmond

    13 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

One of the oldest towns in Australia after white colonisation, this former Van Diemen's Land penal colony pioneered the local area from 1824. It's home to Australia's oldest working bridge, the Richmond Bridge which was built by convict labour in 1823 and many beautiful sandstone buildings built in the Georgian styleMeer informatie

  • Oatlands

    13 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

What a beautiful historic village! Dating from 1821, it apparently has the highest number of sandstone buildings (mostly convict built) in Australia. I'm coming back to this place!! We also found the ruins of Oatlands gaol too...Meer informatie

  • Oatlands

    14 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIK!!

We all took a walk through the village this morning to show the boys who after a plane trip and traveling yesterday, didn't want to explore with us.

  • Campbell Town

    14 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Like nearby areas of Ross and Oatlands, this town was founded in 1821 and named for Governor Lachlan Macquarie's wife Elizabeth Macquarie nee Campbell.

The log was felled nearby in the late 1800's and it's diameter is taller than me and it's length is 7.8 metres!!

Along High St there is a brick convict trail which mentions some of the convicts and crew sent to Van Diemen's Land. It's absolutely fascinating 🙂🙂🙂

It's beautiful and quaint here 🙂

  • Low Head Penguin Tour

    15 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Tonight we took a trip to Low Head to see the Little Penguins swim out of the water and waddle into their rookeries. We heard the songs the males sung to the females in an effort to mate and saw what happens when unsuccessful with the female kicking the male out with a nip on his tail feathers!! And then he tried it on again with the same result!! We saw baby penguins and heard the babies call to their parents, they sound a bit like some of the night birds that we have at home.

It was so adorable and I'm so glad we got the opportunity to see them 💜💜💜

  • Cataract Gorge Reserve

    16 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This place is so beautiful!! Picnic grounds, playground, BBQ, swimming pool with swimming in the gorge not being really encouraged, but people are swimming anyway 😃😃😃 If I had brought my swimmers, I would be joining them 😃😃😃

There is a suspension bridge which has been here since 1904, which the original got washed away in a large flood. That must have been a massive flood!

Someone is playing my favourite Depeche Mode song (Enjoy The Silence) and I feel blissed and blessed 😃😃😃

The dolermite rocks are over 200 million years old and in First Nation people of this area histories, these once were warriors and are now the sentinels looking after the gorge. of this area. That's the most special part of this beautiful area for me. 💜💜💜

  • Westbury

    18 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This is the village where my four x great grandfather John McDonald Singer was sent as a English convict (arrived in Hobart in 1829 on board the 'York' for stealing) to the Westbury Probation Station (in operation from 1842-1845) (now the Westbury Recreation Ground buildings) where due to his ability to read and write, he was working. In 1842, John received his Conditional Pardon and in 1845, he received his Ticket of Leave for helping to extinguish a fire at the Station and headed back to Hobart with his wife Mary and their 5 (out of 11 children they would go on to have). Westbury was also the location of a convict hiring depot, in operation from 1842-1847.

I have spent the last few hours at the Westbury Historical Society seeing if there was any more information about John and I was given maps of the Station which was gratefully received. Thank you Amanda!!

  • Dove Lake Boatshed

    19 december 2021, Australië ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

I missed seeing this gorgeous boatshed last time I was at Cradle Mountain (December 31st 2020) and I wasn't going to miss it again!!

Built in 1940 by the first Cradle Mountain Ranger, Lionel Connell, the wooden shed sits on a pebble beach while the clear and fresh water of the lake gently laps on the shore. It's perfect 💜💜💜💜Meer informatie
