The same height as Arco iris, the La Fortuna waterfall is a tad (a lot) more touristy but nonetheless, very beautiful. The water is a bit cold and getting in quite slippery but the power of it is impressive. To relax in more peaceful waters it's better to go a bit further down the brook, as demonstrated by Dima😅Baca lagi

  • Boat trip to Tortuguero

    9 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We contine our drive east. Our goal: Costa rica's Carribean coast. Following a recommendation from other travellers we head three hours to La Pavona, where we leave our car parked and take a boat to Tortuguero and its national park. It's said this part of the country is like the Costa rican version of the Amazon, and we soon see why: it consists of mostly tropical forest with rivers cutting through left and right. You only get to Tortuguero either by boat from La Pavona or Moín, or by plane. Hence getting there always takes quite some time but the other place to go on this coastline is way further south (Puerto Viejo), so we figure we go to Tortuguero first.

The 45min boat tour is already an experience in and of itself. Manoevring first through narrow and shallow curves, the river gets broader the closer we get to the sea. We already encounter several bird species, turtles, and three (!) baby crocodiles, and we haven't even gotten to the main spots yet.

Happy with our discoveries but tired from the long trip we are glad we get picked up from the dock and walk the few meters to La Casona de Tortuguero. Very cute place, right next to a soccer field, almost right at the beach (swimming not allowed due to rip currents...and maybe crocodiles or caimans?), with hammocks and a pool. And what we are especially happy about is that we're in the main village with different options for restaurants and tour agencies. Only drawback: the hotel and the agency they recommend only take cash. (The only ATM the place once had was robbed and no bank wants to come here since. Luckily most shops and restaurant let us pay by card.) Our stash is pretty much down to zero after paying for the accommodation, so we need to book our tour through someone else. Following the receptionist's recommendation we end up at Tortuguero Adventures, where we land a package of doing both the guided canoe tour early in the morning, with kayaking on our own later in the day. Perfect! After the long trip and having organized everything for the next day we reward ourselves with a drink and later a nice dinner at the riverside.

  • Canoe tour through Costa rica's "Amazon"

    10 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

A boat tour through Tortuguero National park means lots of cool trees, big and small birds (Mali even spots a black-collared hawk eating a fish on a branch), several iguanas (with one almost falling into the river but catching itself at the last moment), different types of monkeys, a tiny bat, and a caiman hidden in the waters.Baca lagi

  • Kayaking

    10 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Kayaking is lots of fun but also needs a certain level of fitness, as we discover. But it lets you be way closer to the water than on the canoe and we even find some birds and iguanas on our own.

  • Tortuguero National Park

    10 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

For Mali, the afternoon is for wandering around in the park, discovering different birds, some monkeys and a lizard. Despite it being called Jaguar trail, I (luckily? unfortunately?) do not find one. What I did find, however, is that the trail does not go round in a circle but just stops at one point and makes you go all the way back the same way. Exhausting in this warm weather. Luckily there are cinnamon buns being sold right outside the park: perfect for replenishing my energy!😋Baca lagi

  • On the way to find "Pura Vida"

    11 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The Carribean coast of Costa Rica does not have all that many attractions. It's mostly Tortuguero and then a few villages and national parks several hours south of it. Because we do not want to miss out on the often spoken of Carribean vibe, we follow the rumours that Puerto Viejo (de Talamanca) is where "pura vida" is to be found and drive around four hours south after 1 1/2 hours on the boat back to La Pavona. (That's where we saw this caiman lounging on a branch.) The drive turned out to take longer than intended because of kilometers of construction work that increased traffic. But in the late afternoon we finally make it to the first beach🥳Baca lagi

  • Of surfing attempts, bruises&sunburns

    12 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Playa Cocles is everything you might expect from a Caribean beach: fine sand, palm trees, lots of small restaurants and bars, and, of course, surf boards. We decide to give it another try and, highly motivated, jump into the waves. Our success at managing to stand up, however, is fairly limited. For a few exhilarating seconds of "surfing" we get lots of bruises, a renewed ear infection (who would have thought), and Dima quite the sunburn (despite wearing a shirt and having put on sunscreen). Oh well, it was still lots of fun! And hey, now we can proudly say we tried surfing in Costa rica!🥳Baca lagi

  • Awesome food in Puerto Viejo

    13 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Awesome food from Koki beach (with Banana in a Box as dessert: delicious!), Chile Rojo (Asian inspired) and Biríba café (with a lavender lemonade to spend all your money on). The latter is a completely vegan restaurant that just had its opening day!
We enjoyed lots of great food on our trip but these were two of our favourites😋nomnom

  • Jaguar Rescue Center

    14 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

On our last proper day we decide to give the Jaguar Rescue Center a try and are not disappointed. Despite there being no jaguar (and never having been one to begin with), there are lots of cute animals Lisa, the volunteer showing us around, knows lots of interesting facts and stories about. We only get to see the permanent residents, ranging from different birds, monkeys and deer being too used to humans, to a caiman and crocodile not being allowed to, to a sloth and ocelot (and many others) being too sick or not able to survive on their own to be released. Some lack certain skills, others are too old, do not see enough, or suffer from infectious diseases. All in all we learn a lot and are deeply impressed by everyone's commitment. Our faith in humanity is restored a bit😄

  • Last bungalow

    15 Januari 2022, Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We enjoy the last days of our trip at the beautiful Shawandha Ecolodge. A spacious bungalow in the middle of a small jungle with monkeys, coatis, lots of birds and a 70m ceibo tree. There's also supposed to be a sloth somewhere.
Chiquita beach is but 200m from the resort and whenever we go to the pool we have it mostly to ourselves. Very nice for some last days of relaxation.
