  • Delphi Archaeological Sites

    14 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Wheee, our first proper day in Greece! Starting from Athens we take our trip towards Delphi. Along the road we pass impressively green areas right next to seemingly dried out landscapes, the remnants of forest fires, followed by fields of solar panels and wind power plants.
We stop for a delicious lunch at a hotel/restaurant about 20min from our destination. The salad is so good, even Mali likes it...whaaat? Due to the wind it is surprisingly fresh and a sweater is needed - the heat wave southern Greece is suffering under doesn't seem to reach here. The first picture of the small church was taken here. (Yeah, the location is off for this footprint but we only just discovered FindPenguins, so bear with us😅).
Then, finally, the famous archaeological sites of Delphi! We start at Athena Pronaia, a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena (and possibly other godesses and local heroes). (2nd and 3rd picture)
We are impressed by some of the info charts having been translated into braille!
Since the Gymnasium is not open for visit, we continue to the main attraction, passing the Castalian fountain that still is a source for water today - albeit a really small one.
The Sanctuary of Apollo and its surrounding area, however, is just huge. Complete with Sacred way, treasuries gifted by the Greek cities, impressive columns, an amphitheatre and stadium (for the Pythian Games), we are blown away by what still remains of the ancient times. And despite almost being cooked in the afternoon heat (yup, should have planned that better), it is very much worth it!
After a small break in the cafe, we end up in the museum, marveling at the smaller and bigger trinkets that have been found in the area. The sphinx as well as highly detailed statues and wall carvings are among what impressed us most.
Finally, we check in at our hotel for the night and love our little balcony with a view over the valley, all the way to the sea.

  • Monastery Agios Stefanos

    15 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

After a quick check-in with the receptionist, we decide to drive up to the two monasteries closer to Kalambaka. Since the first is about to close for the day, we decide to have a look at the second. The one open half an hour longer and, more importantly, closed the next day: Agios Stefanos.
The nunnery offers extremely detailed and surprisingly colourful wall paintings, a small museum, and a beautiful little garden with a fantastic view.
Afterwards, we drive from viewpoint to viewpoint, taking pictures of the incredible scenery, until we need to reward ourselves with a drink back in Kalambaka. Before returning to enjoy the sunset, of course.

  • Journey continues to Corfu

    17 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The day starts with a huge calory intake. Delicious!
We then start our 2h journey west to Igoumenitsa, where we take the ferry to Kerkyra, Corfu city. The landscape is fantastic, with cute villages with red rooftops every now and then. Along the road we often come across little churches the size of letter boxes. They kind of remind us of the spirit houses found in Thailand for example.
In Igoumenitsa, we first go look for a place to print two forms we need to be allowed onto the ferry. After three non-existing travel agencies (they exist on Google Maps but only there apparently), we end up in a bookshop. Done! Only, the questionnaire is pretty much the same we already filled out online. Oh well!😅
After an appointment at the hairdresser's for Dima and an orange juice for Mali, we get onto the ferry and off to Corfu, which welcomes us with a spectacular view of its Old Fortress.
Arriving in Agios Stefanos an hour drive later we are convinced: Corfu truly deserves being called Greece's "Green Island". Still, it is about as hot as on the mainland and so, having arrived at our hotel, we reward ourselves with a jump into the pool.

  • Pantokrator

    18 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

View from Pantokrator, the highest mountain on Corfu. Being at a bit more than 900m, you get to see all the way to Albania. After a visit to the small monastery up here and a failed attempt at drone flying, we enjoy the first ice cream of our holidays. Yum!😋🍦Läs mer

  • Paleokastritsa Beach and Angelokastro

    18 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Looking for something to do in Corfu, websites and travel blogs sooner or later recommend Paleokastritsa. And while the landscape with pine forests and rocky seaside is indeed beautiful, the masses of people come as a shock. A bit disappointed, we enjoy a late lunch and - nevertheless - dare to go for a quick dive into the crystal clear water.
We decide to start our drive home. But not before having stopped by Angelokastro, a Byzantine castle offering a splendid view over the waters below. Happy with our days work, we head back to our hotel in Agios Stefanos.

  • Vikos Gorge

    22 augusti 2021, Grekland ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

After three detours (reading signs is hard) and almost dying of dehydration (no, there was no water after two hours, as indicated by our hotel owner), we arrive in Vikos after around 7h of hiking through a truly stunning gorge. Green forests, a pearly white riverbed, and cliffs all around. And about an hour from the finish line, we come across a part of the river that hasn't completely dried out in the summer months and offers pools of incredibly clear water to cool off in instead... if you dare jump into 4°C water that is. (According to Google that's the river's temperature all year round.) But it looks and feels like paradise. All in all, an amazing hike!Läs mer
