  • Helsinki Cathedral

    1. september 2022, Finland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

An interesting stop on our walking tour. The cathedral is symmetrical on all 4 sides. The entrance you see with the stair case is actually the side entrance, but because the queues used to block the road after the freedom of religion allowed Finland to be Lutheran, they built the stairs to encourage the crowds to the side.

The architect even made sure the buildings in the city square outside were the same each side of the cathedral, meaning one building was completely empty for over 150 years as it has purely been built to maintain symmetry. It then became a janitors closet for a while 🤣

Unlike most prominent cathedrals, the inside was surprisingly simple. Visitors (including us) often feel taken aback, expecting grandeur but due to the inside being designed later, by a different architect with a different style it is simple and minimal compared to its outside and most other cathedrals.

We actually liked it more, it was nice to see one that was quite different. The organ was under repair as you can see.

  • Helsinki Tour

    1. september 2022, Finland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    1. Dawn, a statue to represent Finland. Unlike the other grand, detailed statues in important places this statue was designed and placed a little differently. She is dressed simply, and modestly, and placed on a back street on a simple corner, to represent the humble and modest nature of the Finnish people, her hands are up to the sun, representing the shock of sunshine in summer shielding her eyes and simultaneously worshipping the sun in winter, during the months many fins become depressed as they live in so much darkness and cold, they idea is they are always waiting for the next season and never content with the one they are in. The statue is also places in a spot with grass and trees around to show the strong cultural desire to stay close to nature. The dream Fin holiday is a powerless cabin with no neighbours where you wouldn't bump into another soul and would need to hunt, fish and collect berries and mushrooms, playing games by candle light etc. This want of privacy and personal space is another reason the statue is fairly hidden away from the busy areas of Helsinki.

    2. Lennon woke up and so I missed all the explanation of the mouse, but something to do with taxes and the day everyones records are put up on line for a week, literally translates to 'see how much your neighbour has' week 😂 to ensure trust in mps, powerful people etc, and to encourage a sense of equality as you see those that earn a lot pay a lot, and it makes people 'happy to pay their taxes' apparently as they have full trust in their government and how their money is spent (😂 sounds hilarious to us brits but she was totally serious)

The very last photo of the wheel, notice one pod is a different colour... It's (of course) a Sauna 🤣 you can't go anywhere without saunas in Finland

One more fact... Finnish is known to be an incredibly hard language to learn, it is part of an unusual language group, linked only to Hungarian and Estonian. For this reason its very different to other Nordic language. Our guide explained it is in fact even worse. Even Fins don't read or write much in Finnish, in fact region to region the language varies so much not everyone understands each other, and written Finnish is basically not used, because it never existed, it was always spoken only, until they were finally granted freedom of religion, and so the Bible was then translated into Finnish to be printed... Because written Finnish did not exist, the man who was writing the translation had to completely make it up, every single word 🤣 so unlike other languages that have evolved over hundreds of years, written Finnish was one man, over the course of 2 years. Many words didn't exist in Finnish that he had to translate such as Lion, and plenty of other things that didn't exist in Finland... So he of course had to just invent those words, meaning many words are very similar as he probably ran out of ideas. The whole written language hasn't changed since so if you read it out loud it would be to a fin as reading Shakespeare would be to a modern brit 😂

  • Helsinki Cathedral Crypt

    1. september 2022, Finland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Fitting with the Finnish stereotype of humbleness and modesty, this crypt went hundreds of years totally empty, as despite being a religious nation, they never deemed anyone important enough to be buried there 😂
To this day no one has been important enough, so it's now a cafe and art exhibit which apparently fits with another Finnish trait of being one of the worlds most coffee drinking nations (to get through the long dark winters)

  • Mental Health Hospital Exhibit

    1. september 2022, Finland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Going back from the times everyone was essentially tortured and sterilised (including epileptics who were seen as mad!) to more recent (ish) times with some of the art and clothes made by the patients on display.

The last bit... We assume was the feeling of being calm and healthy 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ who knows but the swing was fun

  • Arriving in Estonia 🇪🇪

    2. september 2022, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Arriving in Estonia, Brace was met by friendly locals who were encouraging him to go for a swim (in wooly hats 😂)

Then we walked into Tallinn's old town. The place is so old and exceptionally preserved it almost doesn't look real. But it is all real and a UNESCO world heritage site. I'm not sure what I expected but it wasn't a fully functioning medieval town.

Not great for prams or wheelchairs 🤣

  • New Shoes

    3. september 2022, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Me and Lennon went to a flea shop and bought some roller blades 😂
Not the most exciting photos of the occasion but a very exciting day for me 😁

I expected to pick up where I'd left off at around 7 years old, and was shocked to be so terrible at skating 😂Læs mere

  • 1980 Russian Olympic Stadium

    4. september 2022, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Now mostly abandoned, but still standing, is a huge Olympic Stadium in Estonia. Built back when Russia was still ruling there, they built the huge stadium to hold boating events, as well as a 50,000 capacity arena plus other features such a a helipad. It was apparently designed to show off the Russians skillful cement pouring skills.

Essentially a chilling spot for local teens now, it's falling apart and covered in graffiti but the ground floor is secured and full of nice cars 🤔 and the helipad was in use while we were there multiple times.

We parked here for the night.

  • Tallinn Walking Tour

    5. september 2022, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Tallinn was great, very interesting and beautiful.
The tour was so boring I was using all my concentration to not yawn so I missed all the information. Even Lennon wasn't interested which is unlike him when it comes to tour guides.

The only interesting things were the guide was from London... not what you expect in Estonia 😂
Also that pigeon came over to us a few times which was fun.

  • Chemist & Coffee

    5. september 2022, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We visited the oldest continuously running pharmacy in Europe. It was very old.

We also went twice during our time in Tallinn to what was probably the coolest coffee shop in the world. It felt like something from Hogsmeade, and was so crazy inside. But due it's dark and cozy nature the photos look terrible.Læs mere

  • Swimming

    8. september 2022, Letland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I went for a baby free swim! I swam 1km but spent more time in the 4 saunas (Finnish, Turkish, Japanese and Salt) and aromatherapy shower 😁

I didn't get any photos of course, but when I arrived back to the van all 3 of my boys were stood waiting for me at the door which was nice 😂

In the afternoon we walked into Riga

  • Riga Old Town

    8. september 2022, Letland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Riga is has an unusual old town in a sense that the whole centre really is the old town rather than a smaller concentrated area. We decided to not do another walking tour as we have done too many lately and want to save ourselves for a while so we appreciate the next one we do more. But it was lovely just wandering around and the couple of wines probably added to it... They should have wine on walking tours 😁Læs mere

  • Latvian Restaurant

    8. september 2022, Letland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We came across a very cheap Latvian menu outside a restaurant and decided to go there. It was like a school canteen! You poured your own drinks, asked for what food you wanted on your plate and went to pay. The food was lovely! Who knows what we had... Lots of meat essentially.Læs mere
